I feel like in terms of Visuals, Studio Feel is an alright studio, not great, but definitely not bad either. However I do think there's a good chance they will fumble the execution of the story itself. They animated Island, another highly rated Visual Novel, and supposedly it was done horribly.

Summer Pockets Reflection Blue is my third favorite visual novel of all time, so I want to have high expectations for the show. The Novel made me ugly cry numerous times, honestly the most I've ever cried aside from watching the Kanon 2006 anime. Key just has a way of writing stellar characters and character interactions that feel genuine and real. Summer Pockets Reflection Blue in particular has the feeling of a tight knit family feel to it, where even though the relationships may only be as long as a summers worth, they feel like they'd been together since forever. I'd say as of now there's a 50% chance it's a fumble, and if they announce that it's not going to be 21-26 episodes long, then it's going to be a 90% flop. Well one thing they CAN'T mess up with is the music. I constantly listen to the soundtrack as it helps me relax and even has me fantasize being on a small island just making merry with others.

@DoctorWasabi I genuinely don't think it'll be less than 2 cours given the comments of the staff.

Anime Director Tomoki Kobayashi: "Animation production sometimes takes many summers and years. Once it's broadcast, it only takes a moment. Please enjoy this fleeting story of summer vacation."

SP Producer Toya Okano: "If we had just turned the work ``Summer Pockets'' into an anime, we probably could have delivered it sooner."
"However, what I wanted was not just ``just an anime,'' but ``an anime that could meet the expectations of the fans,'' so in order to achieve that, I needed people in the industry who said they wanted to bet everything on this work"

Anime Producer Naoto Nakashima: "all of our staff members are working hard every day to make ``Summer Pockets'' on par with the masterpieces!" "A few years ago: ``I will put everything I have into making ``Summer Pockets'' a work that will be loved for a long time.''"

Also all the SP staff were involved in anime production.

--

If it means anything, the series comp of Island isn't doing the series comp here. That being said, feel doesn't really have a ton of choices and there's a chance they'll fumble with the story. Keiichirou Oochi is doing the series composition, seems like a more efficient guy than a master of his craft.

His comments are do not give me a ton of hope.

"I'll just do what I can - that's what I firmly decided when I was in charge of the series composition of ``Summer Pockets''," ...
"Of course, it is impossible to incorporate all of the vast elements of the original work into the anime." ...
"I am confident that we were able to incorporate as much of the episodes that fans of the original work would have wanted to see in the anime as possible." ...

"Please look forward to the sparkling, dazzling, hot, and sad story of one summer that Hairi experiences with the attractive heroines!"

To be fair, series composition for Summer Pockets (and most VNs) is a difficult job, but I really can't tell when he's being realistic, lowering expectations, or joking around.

tl;dr - Key SP staff attended every meeting and involved in production. Production took many years. Producers sound very optimistic. Series comp does not give me a ton of faith.

All I can say is I really really hope SP gets a godtier adaptation.

As much as I'd love for another Key adaption by KyoAni, I'm optimistic for Feel

Honestly I’m just happy they’re making it. They’re no PA or Kyoani, but I’ll take a summer pockets anime over nothing

I'm just happy it hasn't been abandoned as a project to be honest.

And while the prospect of it being butchered is real and a concern, at least the VN itself will always still be there to play through again if that happens.

It is too long a VN.
I won't say anything about Island because the failures, although they mark you for life, do so in two ways, so that they remind you, and so that you remember it yourself so as not to repeat it later.
I will not lose faith because of a past mistake and rather will have faith that it is better than his former works.

But SamaPoke is very long, obviously reducing the material, and there is the question of the temporal restart, each of the Summer Pockets routes occurs in a single summer in different timelines, if they made an adaptation to include material from all the routes it would look strange, And how would you take the true routes? Those are a yes or yes to adapt and must be done from the beginning of Hairi's arrival

I thought it would be Biburry because they did the OP scenes. Really glad it's feel. They've done some of my favorite anime.

I am curious if this will be an adaption of the regular game or Reflection Blue. I am hoping it's the regular game, as I haven't played Reflection Blue yet.

@ZoeEbe Eh? Summer Pockets is 40 hours long, which isn't really that long for a VN and certainly not for a Key VN. 2-cours will be perfectly fine for a VN of that length.

For comparison, VNDB says Clannad is around 80 hours long and that got 4-cours and felt perfectly paced. Little Busters is around the same length and worked perfectly at 3-cours long. It's an inevitability and, arguably, necessity of adapting a VN to anime that some material will be cut, but it can still be made to work.

It will be interesting to see how the timeloop structure is handled though, as a lot of VN adaptations tend to put all the routes in a singular timeline but just remove the romance elements to focus on the true route at the end of it all (that's what Clannad does, for example, hence the existence of the Tomoyo and Kyou OVAs that adapt the romantic elements of their routes). But you can't really do that in this case as the timeframe for the events of each loop is relatively small and the events of them are all explicitly tied to the progression of summer and to certain dates within (particularly Ao's route, as I recall).

That is my only concern with this adaptation, that they'll somehow mess that up. But even if they do, the VN will always be there to enjoy still and a bad adaptation could never take away from that.

@Atavistic The thing is that they haven't yet announced how many episodes it will have, so even if 2-courses is enough... Will there be 2-courses? We do not know.
The time loops thing is impossible, not difficult to avoid on a route, since in the common ones Hairi meets Shiroha alone while in Alka she meets her with Umi.We have to wait for more news, between about 25-30 episodes quite well and it would cover the story well (the loop thing is still a point to think about, but oh well)
There is still a year left, thinking now about what it will be like will only bring us stress, anyway, the novel is still just as good no matter how it is her anime adaptation

@Phoenix_Trite the thing is that the original version has an open ending, while Reflection Blue adds a post-credit scene in which a character who does not know who she is ("not known who she is" = it is known that she is Shiki) and helps a certain character return to the world showing confirmation that the story had a happy ending.
If they adapt the original version it wouldn't be so bad, but they should leave the ending open, because the ending needs Shiki, who is an exclusive character from Reflection Blue.
It would be good but open, while in Reflection Blue it would be longer, but its ending is conformed to being a good ending after a time jump

@ZoeEbe Then I have to assume it will be an add on like Ex+ is for Little Busters anime.

That also feels like spoiler territory for those that have played the original but not Reflection Blue.

@Phoenix_Trite It's just a post-credit scene after the ending of Pocket, very short, it only confirms a happy ending for the family, I don't even name the character who in the original separates herself from the world, the one who played will know who she is and that's it, Reflection Blue confirms that he returned to the world to have a happy ending, if it is a spoiler it is, but for someone who played the original it is not so much, it is a short post-credit scene that simply confirms the happy ending that was left to interpretation in the original novel, here it is confirmed that it ends well and the whole family lives happily

It's been a while since the Summer Pockets anime was announced, so I really hope the production team has dedicated the time this story deserves. I'm hopeful they can give it at least two seasons or a minimum of 24 episodes in total, though honestly, I don't have much faith in Studio Feel given their track record. I'll watch it anyway, but I hope the people in charge know what they're doing.

And after this adaptation, I really hope they make a new season of Kaginado that includes Summer Pockets.

ㅤㅤ I love Nao Tomori ♡
