This is why Mushoku Tensei is special. Absolutely gut wrenching, episode of the year material. Also the animation team went all out, on par with the best fight scenes of S1.

Things went way too well for Rudeus this season.. now his father is dead and his mom is a vegetable from beeing stuck in a crystal for too long. (If only the same thing happened to a certain character from AoT..)

I guess man god was right, he really should have never come here. Though then Roxy would be dead.. Lets hope that atleast his family at home is doing better.

Good thing his relationship with his sisters is doing well now because he has to be their step dad now..

I was not prepared for an episode this dark..

Rudy might not have considered them his parents, but they were still the closest thing he had in this world.

I have to be honest, I was expecting more from Rudy in this fight. I guess he really lacks experience and also just was out of the adventuring life for too long.

No single episode has hit me like this in ages and of course it would be from this show .. Im tempted to rewatch the entire show once this is done to compare the Orsted fight to the Hydra one and also to see his early life with his parents again..

Ok so this is the turning point of turning point 3 I feel. Paul RIP but you saved Rudy. Zenith is alive but amnesia? Unable to speak? Brain dead? idk but being trapped in a crystal fucks you up. They did really well against that Hydra honestly but in that kind of battle any moment one of them can die.

Also happy Father's day guys...this timing seems like it's not a coincidence. THEY FUCKING PLANNED THIS SHIT RIGHT!? I MEAN IT HAS TO BE PLANNED?!

**OBVIOUS SPOILERS FOR THIS EPISODE**

Okay so i have to get this out, is it just me or wasn't Paul's death Rudeus' fault? Like annyoingly so, like I felt his death could have easily been avoided? I mean they did the same combo of cutting the head and shooting it with fire afterwards with minor scatches untill the very last head. And ON THE VERY LAST HEAD rudy is completely out of it like "Oh yes! One head remaining" and has to be saved by Paul. And everyone is fine when this happens, and then the VERY LAST HEAD even after that close call Rudy still doesn't like pay attention to the ONLY HEAD that can do damage anymore, and so Paul has to save Rudes again costing his life.

Like I can't stop thinking about it. It's like so ass it made me start cursing on the screen like what are you doing..
And then after the fight he's all smiling "We did it!! :)))" Not even thinking about if Paul is okay who just clearly saved his ass twice with the second being lethal.

Don't get me wrong other than that I absolutely loved the episode and it definitely hit in the feels. Great episode.

if you noticed the scene correctly, it did not happen when Rudy was thinking that they have won, but when Roxy and Talhand were attacked by Hydra's tail. He shifted his attention to see if they needed any assistance, that's when the final head almost caught him off guard and Paul had to jump in to save him.

So hard to watch. I have read the light novels and was so anxious for the last couple of episodes waiting for this. It was very emotional. Good bye Paul, you scumbag. You will be missed 😢

They rescued Zenith but she is not there. Truly sad.
He was told he is going to regret it. And he is regretting it. And he will regret it more.

Animation was amazing and everything was dealt with as it should be. I like that they used up every second up until the end.

Peak anime. Fk the dumb haters.

I cant get over how they didnt use any ost in that last Paul scene. I know quiet can sometimes be better choice than any music, but it just wasnt the case here. It just felt lazy to have such big scene and no music whatsoever. Imagine this scene with something like "Requiem of silence". Would have been significantly better.

I was spoiled but damn, the way things ended, and for what? Rip Paul. O7

This was one of a few instances where I had to wait for a moment after the episode ended, to gather my thoughts before continue watching the other shows that aired today. That rarely happens but S1E16 of MT and now this both left me flabbergasted. Such an 10/10 episode this was.

RIP Paul, fuck those LN readers for spoiling but it still sad to witness. He's not perfect but hes a good father even at the very end. Zenith isn't herself now too, its quite accurate how Rudy points out that Zenith was more like someone they're living with. We never really had much interactions with her.

If Rudy follows what Human god said they wouldn't find the Hydra without Rudy so they would probably have more backup that can also cut the hydra's head once Rudy comes and who knows who'll Rudy meet at a Royal family of beasts. But Roxy would've died so ig he still chose the right option

@V1P3R0P Yeah it didn't happen when he thought they won, that's not what I'm talking about. Now that you mention the tail though I see that Talhand had to protect Roxy from the tail, while Elinalise is jumping over it to avoid it.
Just the way I see it though that shouldn't be enough for Rudy to lose sight/awareness of the last head. I mean there is only one of them now. Just thinking he should be able to dodge or par it with magic or something if he just paid a bit more attention and then everything ends well.
And that's all if he didn't have the eye to see few seconds forward in time. Where was that? I mean with that he for sure would have seen the attack coming, no?

@NeutroNShivA I preferred it with no music. The silence like you mentioned, only made the place feel more emptier and bleaker, and shit feel more real and impactful that way. Again it can differ depending on the person, but the silence made it feel more raw and emotional for me and less theatrical in a way. The fact that Paul doesn't even speak makes the use of silence even more effective in my opinion. The subtlety and confidence to use a lack of music works here but again, just an opinion from my side.

Well that's just depressing. It's a cruel thing to say but maybe they would have been better off never searching for her. Now Paul's kids not only lost their father but didn't get back their mother either - unless they can cure her mentally.

Also very surprised that Rudy STILL get's careless in such high-intensity battles. Really dropped the ball when he got overconfident because there was "only one head left!". His carelessness killed Paul, curious to see how his blond sister that he just reconciled with not too long ago will react to that.

They hit the nail on the head with both Mother’s and Father’s Day this season, first with Sylphie being pregnant on Mother’s Day, and now… RIP Paul, very good/bad timing lol. But yeah I absolutely had a feeling someone wasn’t making it out of this fight alive, even if they had a good strategy and were doing pretty good against the Hydra, a damn shame but at least the whole fight looked amazing and had some very cool moments, it was badass watching Rudeus and Roxy launch massive fireballs at the Hydra’s decapitated heads, and I like that Rudeus made use of a classic in our world to defeat the Hydra, one of those times the Isekai aspect is cool.

But to make matters worse, the rescued Zenith was revealed at the end to have what I’m thinking is complete memory loss, like even as far as losing her speech, damn that is rough, I’m not sure if that’s what’s happening exactly or not but that ending just poured acid in the wound. But, we still got two episodes left, there’s absolutely more time for shit to go wrong and I’m not relaxing until it’s over lol.

@Juukaliz There is so much more that they could've done but ultimately didn't. MT oftentimes is a story about making mistakes and moving past them. Rudy isn't omnipotent. His eye was used in the episode and I could barely decipher what was going on there so I assumed that he didn't utilize it because the overlay got to distracting. His father didn't need healing or help so far while the others did so his attention going from paul to the others makes sense within the context of what came before.

I've been telling this since season 1,
Rudeus is not perfect. He makes mistakes like any normal human does. But people here seems to like blaming him harshly for everything that goes on in this series.

Secondly, he can see only 1 second into the future as far as I'm aware of, since he is not able to get accurate predictions, the more further in time he looks.

I'd say, instead of Paul jumping at Rudy, if he had aimed for the Hydra's final head, this disaster would've averted. But as a father, his first instinct was to save his son, and thats what he did. Moreover, Rudy wasnt even aware that Paul took a critical hit. He only realized that after everything ended. So, I really dont see how he's at fault over here, just because he thought "One final head and we win". Any other person would've been thinking the same when they are about to win.

@Juukaliz The eye only helps him in its field of view. The Hydra came from above his head, so outside of his vision, no way it could have helped him there tbh. Also, it's like a second or so in the future. Paul saw the attack coming 3 seconds before it impacted and kicked Rudy 1 second before it impacted. So the soonest he would have seen that the Hydra is about to hit him was exactly when Paul had already saved him. The fact Rudy didn't pay attention just because he already felt victorious ("only one head left!"), after he already has his fair share of experience with his carelessness and mistakes costing lifes, is a bit disappointing and surprising tho.

A great episode within the best series I've seen so far. Thanks to some people clarifying why Rudy stood like a total moron in the middle of the fight, it started making sense, though I hope it will be also clarified in the next episodes as this one was filled with plot, though they could've probably skip opening to fit it within single episode, though there wouldn't be a lot of time left to dive deeper into it. We'll see.

Now what Hitogami meant is quite clear, though I wait for more `misery`. In the spoiler field I put what I think is to be compared between possible decisions + some speculations. No spoilers beyond this episode though as I've not read the ln. If you haven't seen this episode, please don't read the `spoilers`.

I'm not saying this out of hate but Paul's death was very cliche. Close to winning the fight, Rudeus gets complacent and loses focus on the fight almost getting killed but ends up being saved by Paul thus dying instead. It's been done many times.
This just proves what God said that Rudeus was going to regret his decision. Rudeus is still inexperienced in battle, which makes me wonder if he's going to blame himself for killing his dad
Still a fantastic episode nonetheless.
