Even if we apply real world laws of war, it was still regular war effort and justifiable response to unprovoked hostility. On top of that, no one besides combatants were targeted by Rimuru.
Wether his actions were motally correct or not is up to debate tho.

He had no choice but to do what he did in order to protect his nation and his people. Remember in season 1 when he said he had no intention to become a demon lord. Clayman provoked him and made him do all that. It’s just the same as in reality; nations go to war in order to protect their people or allies (some nations do that at least.)

Since we don’t know the specific laws of the world that he lives in- it’s impossible to know whether he committed war crimes or not. Since he only killed an invading military force, probably not.

But for real, it’s an isekai anime. Don’t take it too seriously.

Well, he could’ve just killed until the army surrendered, so I guess yeah. Killing a foe that surrenders to you is probably something that should be considered a war crime. It isn’t like everyone in the army would be responsible for the killings in the city anyway, so vengeance isn’t justified either. It is understandable why he did it though, but that doesn’t make it just.

Bruh, what? It’s retaliation for what the knights did to his own people. There’s a difference between innocent civilians (what the knights did) and killing the enemy soldiers who would attack them (what Rimuru did). If anything here is a war crime, it’s the knights just barging in and killing folks without first giving a declaration of war.

No, the world he is in, doesn't have any war laws. Infact he did something un heard of, he kept war prisoners. Granted only 3 and single handedly massacred the rest. But he KEPT 3 alive and other than interrogation, treated them very well.
