Everyone says this is a wonderful remake, maybe not 1:1, but still a great update to 90s anime. ... So what is going on?

It just doesn't seem to be as popular as "it should be".

Could it be that there is nothing wrong with it, but rather that the very story of Rurouni Kenshin just isn't impressive in current era?

It already was discussed a lot.

TLDR :
- The problem of the Author deters some people from looking at it.
- The hype/popularity of Rurouni Kenshin dived down in the US after the problem of the Author.
- The production is average everywhere. (Including the OSTs)
- The story is just not that much interesting/impressive at the beginning.
- The removal of comedy makes it seems "flat" and/or "soulless".
- There is a lot of affection for the old adaptations.
- It's airing when other very popular Animes are also airing.

So it's a Remake faithful to the Manga , it added some details very nice to see for the long time fans , and the actions scenes are good to look at.
But that's all.

One factor might be author being convicted of a nasty crime, which may cause a boycott.
The other might be this series being a product of it's time, which just didn't aged well for some.

Can't say anything but the remake is wonderful. Actually every remake is something better and best.

I guess my attraction will be the Kyoto Arc. Because still if we want to see the episode of 90's, we start from the 27th episode where Saito has been introduced. So it is a very good adaption for me. Because the '90s had a lot more fillers which was unnecessary. This adaption is faithful to its manga. However, it didn't get the kind of budget that was actually needed to make this like Ufotable or Mappa. So, i guess it will have enough budget to make its 2nd season, so lets see what will happen with Kyoto arc
If any one has info about making the 2nd season, please elighten me if there is any news

It feels soulless compared to the old version.

It’s not a bad remake but it’s really dull compared to the original. The direction is uninspired, the storyboards are dull and the animation while not bad is just kinda bland. I’m not hating on the show, the characters, voice acting and story are very good. It just lacks the creativity and attention to detail that the original had.

The real meat of the story is about to begin, but there’s a lot of setup in the beginning. I think in the collection of seeming mini arcs and slower pacing could be turning people off, especially when in the middle of some pretty strong seasons of other anime. That combined with what everyone else has mentioned about the author and the fact that it’s a remake.

I’m enjoying it as a companion piece to the original, though I’ll always favor the original. The animation in this remake is good, but almost too “clean” maybe? I’m definitely curious how they’ll handle some upcoming stuff

I think people that are saying it's good probably because of nostalgia. When Kenshin first came out, at least for me there wasn't much choices in watching anime on TV. I am still watching the remake I still think it's good. I don't know I would of watch it now for the first time with so many choices on Crunchyroll and HiDive. It's kinda conflicting.

imo, this adaption is not as bad as people make it to be, but the original is truly showing the age. because this is faithful to the manga, but the start of the manga truly is, just your usual 'villain of the week' format. it's a little aimless really. the format is truly just some baddies show up, kenshin beat them up with some wisdoms sprinkled in it and repeat it next week. it's truly not getting interesting until kyoto arc because that's when the plot feels like it's 'moving'. as someone says, this is just a setup for the actual meat.

if you are not truly attached to the characters, it's really easy to see someone drop this before the actual meat comes later. i like this because of nostalgia really, despite liking the art direction of previous adaption better. i'm actually in disbelief that they truly adapt it as faithfully as it is despite the start is really nothing spectacular to write about

It IS a wonderful remake. People just don't know that this remake exists. Just look at this thread made in 23 September in the Rurouni Kenshin (1996) forum: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2118977

The OP in that thread didn't mention the 2023 anime at all in their post. It's clear that they didn't know it even exists. I'm surprised the show isn't more popular, especially since there are a lot of people who don't watch any anime that was made over 10 years ago, and only watch newer anime.

Also, any complaints of the 2023 anime are just nitpicking, for example, the music being better in the 1996 version (though they probably should've kept the comedy moments from the manga). It doesn't have rushed pacing and still frames during fights like Shaman King (2021) had, which were valid complaints. And the 2023 anime will most likely adapt beyond what the 1996 anime adapted. Maybe when it adapts the Jinchu arc, it'll increase in popularity? Who knows? The first season of Fruits Basket (2019) is more popular than the 2001 version on MAL (2019 = #222 in popularity; 2001 = #398 in popularity). This is despite the fact that everything in the first season of FB 2019 had already been adapted before in the 2001 version.

And yes, there's also the issue with the author, which makes people not want to watch it at all, I guess. I myself never bought the manga, and never will because of that. There's also people skipping it because they've already watched the 1996 anime and knows what'll happen, and just waiting for the anime to get to the Jinchu arc.

Also:

the very story of Rurouni Kenshin just isn't impressive in current era?

The manga ranks #106 on this site ffs. It wouldn't be this high if the story was not good. "In current era" it's a historical anime. Kimetsu no Yaiba is also from this current era and a historical anime too, yet it's one of the most popular anime/manga series ever. Honestly, all the praise of Rurouni Kenshin comes from the Kyoto arc. People just don't care much for the events pre-Kyoto arc it seems.

Anyway, I like both versions of the show. They're both really good. The 1996 version had a lot of fillers though, and there's no point watching the 1996 version after episode 62 because it's all filler.

Even if he knew , he literally said he looked for 80/90s esthetics.

That's the case only now.

When it was airing , there was barely 130k people (#784) with it in their list after the first half ended. (It quickly went up to 160k (#658) when it finished tho) For the first few Episodes , there was not even 45k people...

So something similar might happen here.

@wildhood By current era I meant current era of anime.

ppl already mentioned the biggest reason namely the Author. but, to be fair the very beginning wasnt that great - its very episodic like Monster of the week and that was the issue I had watching the old ep. The way characters and conflicts are introduced are very dull, no build up - go in a place voila there is a conflict waiting for our heros and get get introduce to a new character, no suspense etc. The second arc fixes it thats where it gets really good. I must say tho I like some of the vilains introduced in this first part I just wished there were some tensions and build

I really like the remake and who tf cares what the author did. Has nothing to do with the anime / manga itself.
Tbh i think it's better when retarded people stay away from a show because of irrelevant issues, makes the discussion better since less retarded people are present :)
I'm not reading any replies or comments directed at me at all. I know my truth and if you disagree: that's fine but i couldn't give a damn about :)

Actually it's still popular in Japan. Kenshin always in top 10 streaming chart weekly in Japan.
