While watching I have been kind of curious if Mia is actually dead. I mean in the anime there is no other magic outside of time traveling guillotine and diary that shows the future. A lot of the anime is about second chances. I was wondering if she was actually dead and her is going through some trial. I know it sounds weird just a thought I had. I'm really enjoying the anime it's one of my favorites this season.

The tone seems too lighthearted for this kind of thing. A purgatory for Mia would probably involve her living through the results of her neglectful rule.

Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story seems to be a case of time/space travel between universes. Princess Mia from episode 1 is dead. I know nobody who survived execution by guillotine... It is probable both the diary, fed with Princess Mia's life energy, and Princess Mia's mind, fed with the extreme misery of hers, triggered the time/space travel before she died. Princess Mia after the time/space travel is in another universe. The diary and Princess Mia's mind remain the same.

It was just a thought. Just curiosity based on the beginning and the diary ended up making me think in that direction.

I watched a few animes that started out bright and cheerful at the beginning. To completely change tone by the second half.

I find it interesting. Like I said, it's just something random I thought of while watching. Just made me more interested in the plot

@Moppit It is interesting but, of course, only the author knows what really happened with Princess Mia, be it magic, supernatural or natural/scientific. Put aside Princess Mia's charisma, personality and her funny antics, the story is very interesting and obviously relates to Queen Marie-Antoinette's history.

I am pretty sure none of this is considered spoiler. The title of my topic is a giveaway of what I'm talking about, so if you didn't want to see, you didn't have to click. Mostly, I only talk about the first episode. If any of this is mentioned in the LN, then I apologize. I didn't know.

It's fine, I just wanted to write some spoilery stuff from the recent English chapter of LN (and I couldn't find how to do it)

> Is Mia in Purgatory?

That's likely, because Tearmoon LN author is reportedly a japanese christian and it's a very central tenet of christianity that there is no reincarnation or karmic circle. People have just one life to live and after that their souls go to Hell, Heaven or Purgatory. (Note: most protestant denominations don't believe in Purgatory or the place of temporal atonement for sins, but christianity with apostolic continuity, esp. catholicism does.) Then at the End of Times all dead are resurrected bodily and all people go to eternally reside either in Hell or Paradise, as they deserve.

To sum it, if LN author is indeed a christian then Mia Luna is not getting a second life.

No, I highly doubt that Mia is in purgatory. Of course, the light novels this anime is adapting from is still ongoing and I don't know if the author will ultimately change the direction of the plot, but from what I've already read, this series is all about redemption and second chances. It should be slightly clearer in the upcoming episodes, but the primary conceit is Mia slowly becoming a better person, and in turn, she influences/inspires all those around her to become better themselves.
