As soon as the scene with Hongou began I anticipated the outcome as I’m sure many of us did. It was predictable. But not bad, not at all. Despite going into this knowing that somehow Hongou would end up crying on top of Yamagishi and letting out her insecurities, it still surprised me and was effective. Hongou fleeing to the bathroom and letting the sadness sink in that she lost the upper hand and thus feels she can no longer astonish him, feeling as though she will be forgotten, as she, and Sugawara paralleling her, struggle with their self esteem was nice. But like with many moments in this manga, the emotion of Hongou breaking down and the nuance on Yamagishi’s face as he held her and apologized for being a coward and she just started to cry like a child was as good as ever. That double page of tears was wonderful!!!

But speaking of Sugawara she intertwined with Momo. Momo confronted that boy and to no surprise with the tone set, he came off as awful. Guilting and blaming her. Insulting and threatening her. And ultimately trying to manipulate her. Quite the entitled guy he is and not exactly the kind of boy he described himself as on their date, the childhood stuff and all. But upon grabbing her and Momo’s somewhat traumatized response to such behavior, she called Sugawara. Sugawara was too in a low moment, wanting someone to hit on her so she felt like she had worth, probably one of the toxic seeds sown by Saegusa when she was young, discussing her value as attached to her youth, and having been rejected by the two men she ever liked. She even had a song about growing up too fast so she wouldn’t be alone and wearing a mask playing which seemed to reflect her situation, not knowing what response to give when Momo ended up confessing to her. I suppose we have seen Sugawara, the mature and wise one, fall behind as Kazusa and Sonezaki actually learned more than her. If I recall Sonezaki spoke about how it was alright to use experiences related to in books to help a friend if you can’t with your own experiences and maybe in a way Sugawara was doing something like that but has now been replaced with the true experience of her “comrades”. As always, Momo’s sad cry at the end as she needed Suga by her side was perfect, as was the translation notes page, it came off as actually super beautiful.
