The Quintessential Quintuplets
| I love this anime but I expected its rating to be a little higher (especially QQ S2), or maybe the other way around. For example is bocchi the rock really better than quintessential quintuplets or any other animes rated >8.5. If it's true then can you guys explain why to new anime lover like me? I'm using MAL rating to decide whether I will watch the anime or not. But after watching bocchi, cote, angel beats, qq, etc now I'm questioning if it's the correct way or not. |

The Scores are just a representation of what the userbase of MAL generally thing of the entry. You can't blindly follow the opinions of others , without asking yourself if you will like the content or not. As for the scores of this franchise , do not forget that aside from the quintuplet setting , it's a very typical School Harem story... There is no groundbreaking writing in this type of story , it's just a nice little story to follow , and the userbase does not think it deserve the status of "great" or "masterpiece" work. I would recommend you to check the score to see what is the general opinion on the entry , then read the synopsis to see if you would like it. You can also use the 3 Episodes rule , to factually see if it interest you or not. But do not think that because the entry has a 9+ rating you will love it to death , or that it have 8- you will hate it. You are forgetting the genres , themes and public target of those works tho. Bocchi is a Cute Girl Doing Cute Things Anime , while Quintuplets is an Harem. Those who love one may (and generally does not) not love the other. Most peoples didn't even watched both. Maybe Bocchi is a CGDCT masterpiece , and got higher ratings from those who usually watch those type of Animes... So yeah , there is many factors that plays a role in the score , and it's not good to focus too much on it. |

I guess I just really like any anime with "nice little story to follow" and still unfamiliar with how to objectively judge an anime. But that's a good suggestion, I will remember it and I will lower my minimum-rating-to-watch from 8 to 7.5. | No way can you trust it, as the other poster said above I bet most people who rated have not really seen it. It's not even out on p1r4cy sites yet. Looking at the score distribution it seems believable, but even if most of these people did see it, it's a totally different group of people than the usual "rate-it-as-soon-as-it-streams" MAL audience. I have my full hopes that SHAFT gotobun will the the peak of the series and the rating will go up. Or maybe the movie soiled people's opinions of the series, who knows. |
| Personally, i find MAL ratings to be more or less dependable since i believe it represent more genuine user database than bots. There are different demographics but that's to be expected. This seems to be my general assessment: >8.5 = mostly give the anime a try. 7.5-8.4 = look at demographics, themes, genres, synopsis, characters, top 3 reviews. 6.5-7.4 = look at everything above + trailer/PVs and more reviews. 0-6.4 = mostly pass, unless it's interesting/controversial. However, don't depend on the ratings of an anime entry that's just been recently aired (within hours), especially movies and specials/OVAs like in this case where you can't find on the net. Those can take months to be available to the general audience and only then the ratings can be dependable. For most cases, regardless of ratings, you should give something a try if it interests you, especially if it's a sequel or side story of an anime that you already like (you gave 9-10 for previous installments of TQQ). Additionally, this special is done by studio Shaft, so i think you shouldn't worry too much. |

| Don’t trust the ratings. In the best case scenario, it provides you little to no useful information with only a number as a lead. Worst case, it brings disappointment because it may not live up to the rating, which again is something you shouldn’t trust. Look at the synopsis and content rather than the score, just because an anime can be highly rated by MAL doesn’t mean you will be guaranteed to like or enjoy it. Ask yourself if you will enjoy the content that the anime is focused on. As for BTR being rated higher, it’s a CGDCT anime with a focus on music while QQ is a standard harem. One may not appeal to the other fanbase. There’s also multiple factors to consider for a score to be high, but you don’t need to mind them. |
