The Canute army was just too much but seriously, this wasn't even a surprise at all.

This episode had very emotional scenes coming from Arnheld's scenes. She's human and of course, she represents the vulnerability of their world. RIP. Ketli made the greatest mistake of his life and now lost his family.

“Oh, I really like killing people”, one of the so-called retainers. “But hey, I don’t want to get killed.. please… PLEASE”, that same so-called retainer.

That’s just how the world works, strong ones will always dominate the weak ones. Now that these people are on the receiving end, they’re realizing the fears those weak people must’ve felt all those time as a result of being tormented by them. Canute’s men are massacring any and every being who can walk on two legs, so it goes without saying Ketil’s army of some 300 were already down to people you can count on fingers. But hey then came the sneak attack.

Thorgil did get Canute by surprise, but that doesn’t mean it changed the course of war in any way. Canute’s men came back in time and chased him away, though that gave Snake and Ketil a chance to withdraw, good for them I guess, for the time being atleast. Leaving them aside, the most heartbreaking moment of this arc finally made its way.. the inevitable death of Arnheid. She just wanted to live, but couldn’t even fulfil that tiniest bit of wish.. aah, I’m literally at a loss of words.

That scene was beyond painful in manga, but the adaptation as always elevated the pain. Einar with his attempt to avenge Arnheid’s death, Thorfinn stopping him and then proceeding to tell him that tale of Vinalnd. God we really are near to the climax, heck even Thorfinn is on his way to CONFRONT Canute. I’m literally screaming.

What an episode, and to think the climax is still there in the queue… PEAK-est of the PEAK indeed.

5000/5. These "emotion" juices aren't stopping though :(

The war at Ketil's farm continues but everyone starts retreating after Snake's orders. One's life is much more important after all. Thorgil successfully flanked Canute but failed to do much against him and then ended up escaping. Snake still standing tall in the midst of dead bodies.

And, then the emotional damage of this episode with Arnheid's last words, Einar's confession, and Thorfinn's words to Arnheid. All the VAs did such an incredible job expressing the character's feelings. There goes Thorfinn to confront Canute. A very emotional and beautiful episode through and through.

RIP Arnheid. You deserved so much better. T_T

Do some people have early-access to the episodes? I reckon the episode released just 2 minutes ago globally on Netflix and yet people here have already written their thoughts on the episode half-an-hour ago.

Powerful....simply powerful. The weight of the era in Vinland Saga and its implications on its inhabitants are something else. Next level storytelling, so happy Mappa committed to the atmosphere. The music and voice acting...just on point.

SIDE NOTE: Also, why is Netflix censoring the gore? Pretty random considering there's other gorier content on the platform. Oh well, still a damn good episode.
Don't believe the hype.

Holy shit this episode man, amazing... They did Arnheid's death so much justice. I see they've altered the ending but now that I think about it I don't really mind it. Won't go into detail about it as it's manga only stuff. Thorfinn finally mentions Vinland in hopes to give Arnheid a peaceful sendoff from this painful world ;-;
Loved the war scene with Snake, Badger, and Fox. Loved Canute vs Thorgill. Brilliant overall.

So it has finally happened. Arnheid has passed on to the other side to her loved ones... Once again, just like the Gardar episode, I have nothing much to say except quote Thorfinn's words that made me sob uncontrollably...

"Einar, killing the master won't quell your rage. Anger begets more anger. It just results in deaths, one after another. I was stuck in that hell for a long time. Please, Einar. Don't fall under the same curse that afflicted me."

Thorfinn, I am proud of you my dude. Your character development is amazing 😭😭😭

infinity/5 episode. Give animators a raise and Yukimura a pat on the back for such an amazing story 🥹🥹🥹

PS: Thorfinn saying he is proud of his ancestors for fleeing the flames of war made me shed a few more tears 😭😭😭. Next episode is titled "Courage", I guess Arnheid's death gave him courage to finally spring forward to do the right thing that Thors once did on his death bed: Prevent as many deaths as possible and save as many lives as possible.

Beautifully adapted by MAPPA. Loved the soundtracks throughout and the voice acting was stellar as usual. We're in for an epic conclusion.

Also Thorgil showed once more why he and Snake are the only 2 individuals on Ketil's farm worthy of respect. Rambo mode against King Canute but (un)fortunately couldn't take him down; got Wulf's right eye though.

Bloody. Brutal. Heartbreaking. Gut-wrenching. Wow. Just wow. I'm at a loss for words.

The brutality of Canute's advance on the farm was on full display as Ketil's men were getting slaughtered and sliced up left and right. Thorgil managed to catch Canute off guard but that didn't go how he had planned it.

But of course, the real meat and potatoes of the episode: Arnheid's death. Her little dream from the previous episode pretty much sealed the deal on what her fate would be, but man, this episode was appropriately titled because all I felt was pain. She didn't deserve this shit, man. If there's anyone who deserved a happy ending it was her. And as she's breathing her last breaths and squeaking out those final words, the emotions are heightened by the pain and helplessness of Einar and Thorfinn as they try desperately to keep her alive even though they know damn well that it's basically over for her. I can't even imagine how hopeless that feeling must be. I could feel their screams through the screen, give those VAs a raise. And what a powerful speech from Thorfinn to bring Einar back to his senses. Man, how much he has grown. Now Thorfinn is off to confront Canute...oh boy this should be exciting.

What a fucking episode, it's been a while since an anime episode has made me feel this empty after. So beautiful, but so tragic. Fuck you Vinland Saga. I'll be back next week.

First Vinland Episode since I got back from my Vinland Saga IRL Scandinavia tour yesterday.

A masterpiece. I don’t even have the words in my lexicon to properly describe and praise enough what I just witnessed. One of the greatest anime episodes of all time.

Perfectly encapsulated everything that makes Vinland saga special in one episode. The amazing fights and brutal reality of Norse life, the philosophical questions, the character drama, the emotions, it had it all. Thank you MAPPA for this, really just no words.

Arnheid was too pure for this world. She deserved to be born in another one. Still breaks my heart Einar never got to voice those words to her.

Wholesomeness with Insomniacs After School
Pain with Vinland Saga (Like, even this week's episode is called Pain)

The battle was so damn brutal it made me sick.
Rest in peace Arnheid, may you find peace in the afterlife, you deserve it.
The chest compressions referenced how Thors saved a slave in season 1. And the scene at the grave referenced a moment with Canute from season 1 as well. Love it.
Oh god oh no what the hell is Thorfinn planning to do? I hope Canute recognizes him at least.
11/10 episode.

Btw fun fact: the chapters this episode adapted were initially released in 2013, and the chapter adapted in episode 1 of this season was released in 2009.

Fox could take it out on a non-combatant Jarl, but on seasoned pros like the Jomsvikings he shivers to the bone.

Thorgil seizes the opportunity to fight his former commander in chief and brothers in arms but underestimated what the King perfected sparing with Wulf.

Arnheid is gone and Einar has an injured Ketil in his sights.h
It's the curse that Askeladd bore, the curse Thorfinn bore. Thorfinn knocks sense into Einar before he could succumb to it.

This episode was great once again. As a viewer, you not only felt the physical but also the emotional pain of the characters. Rest in peace Arnheid. I hope that you, Gardar and your children can find happiness in the afterlife.
I felt so bad for my best boy Einar. He lost his entire family and now Arnheid. No wonder he wanted to kill Ketil for it. Lucky Thorfinn stopped him. I'm also a bit proud of Canute that he was able to assert himself a little against Thorgil.

I'm curious if Thorfinn's plan works.

Thorgil's plan to kill Canute failed. Just barely. I wonder if things would've gone south sooner if his lame brother was there with him. Dammit, I kinda would've liked to see what would've happened if he was actually killed tho I knew it wasn't gonna happen. But at least Thorgil didn't die.

I was thinking that maybe Arnheid will die for a few episodes now. I just didn't know when she'd actually die. And her death makes me so sad. I wish Einar confessed sooner. Maybe that way her will to live might've been stronger. :(

I wish Ketil wasn't unconscious the whole time. The bastard should've seen what he did to his beloved Arnheid with his own two (or one) eyes.

Holy shit this episode had everything from sheer brutality to heart rendering pain damn.

Loved the movement from the viking that badger was fighting that was so cool.

Thorgil vs wulf that was an eye cathing fight, most epic has to be Thorfinn's final resolution at the end.

"Anger begets more anger, it just results in deaths, one after another."

What a painful episode to sit through. It was a full episode filled with raw emotion, and showed how brutal the world is, as the strong will always dominate the weak, that's just how it is. Ketil finally understood that fact as his army got wiped out rather quickly, forcing them to retreat. Thorgil surprised Canute though, and dealt some damage, though the guards were able to push him away.

The pain came quickly as Arnheid had her final moments to thank Thorfinn and Einar. It was truly moving, and the OST made it all the more impactful. The moment Einar saw Ketil, I was worried he would do something that he couldn't take back, but luckily Thorfinn was able to stop him. Thorfinn truly cared for Einar, as he didn't want him to tread down the painful path of revenge that he went through. Masterful character development, genuinely. It's definitely my anime of the year at the moment with how consistently great this show is.

Thorfinn will confront Canute next episode, and with four episodes left, will there still be more pain ahead? I think so.

This episode was powerful, probably the best so far this season as far as Vinland Saga goes, Arnheid's scenes, her death, Einar's anger and Thorfinn's genuine care for him made me tear up, Vinland continues to be peak this season for me.

Arnheid can finally rest after all this suffering. Einar couldn't hold himself once he saw Ketil and needed Thorfinn to bring him back to his senses since he could relate to Einar's anger. Once this is all over, Thorfinn will start his plans of making a new peaceful nation in Vinland.

The action once again was top notch. Canute was almost a goner there against Thorgil who failed at the end. Incoming Thorfinn and Canute reunion is approaching.

Fantastic episode once again

I never thought Thorgill would succeed in killing Canute at the end of last ep and sure enough plot armour comes to the rescue for Canute in the form of Thorgill pausing to talk completely unnecessarily but we did get to see some action. The animation looked quite clean and well done.

I didn't think Arnheid would get killed off. I get that she has nothing to live for but einar and thorfinn had nothing to live for a while ago. I think there was more they could have done with her character but this makes sense as well keeping in mind she was badly injured but the way they framed it made it look like it was her decision to pass on. In the end, she was a tragic character and a happy ending was just not on the cards

Thorfinn recalling the story Lief told him about their ancestors fleeing from war and finding Iceland, how he used to think it was lame but now he's proud of them. Fantastic line of dialogue. The music as he heads off to meet Canute is so good. The ost for this season is just so well done and should not go unnoticed.

Olmar's experience dealing with ordinary people, it's nothing when compared to the Jomsvikings, it's clear that they're outmatched and outgunned, and for all the effort he took to re-engage himself in the battle, his friends are getting massacred...and if not for Snake and Ketil, they would not live to see another day, even if they have death wishes against him teaching that there will always be people positioned higher than him, like Prince Canute. But everything worked against Canute's ideals, which for one last hurrah, will see Thorgil have a feint attack against him.

Thorgil's feint attack against Canute worked like a charm, and it's Wulf to the rescue with him losing one eye and the former almost strangled to death. That at least, tells Canute that he would be glad if Thorgil could serve him again, though that will never happen. As Arnheid listens to the war cries, like her village burnt down by the Danish, Thorfinn, Einar and her walk away from the warzone with Leif, and she would rather want a place that's peaceful without war: back to her home, where Gardar and her kid is waiting for her in Heaven, just as when she finally broke free from her slavery in a land where nothing serves for her wellbeing, only to bring more misery. As a last-ditch effort, Einar professes his love for her, even if they knew that she would not live to see the day. But there IS one place: Vinland, far from the reaches of war, a place where she can live without suffering, her soul and body brought there be a final resting place.

With Snake bringing Ketil back, Einar bursting into a rage of anger, though Thorfinn has to force himself to stop him, knowing the curse that he went through and not wanting Einar to fall under the hellish curse that he faced before. Anger begets more anger, resulting in deaths one after another, and that's a mantra that'll strike the chord of every man alive. And in honour of Arnheid's death, Thorfinn wanting to see Canute, knowing that Ketil's not dead yet, he wants to put a stop to the hackling deaths before returning to Iceland with Leif.

Thorfinn's confrontation with Canute, the meeting of 2 rivals, once again. How will this chance turn out this time?
