looks to have similar art style to some shows in the genre ive watched, but only has romance as the tag? this an oversight or just not heavily leaning into the themes of that genre an merely has a similar looking art style? (Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji for instance)

The demographic for the manga is shoujo

Strictly speaking, shoujo isn't a genre to begin with. Like the previous person said, shoujo is the audience the work is aimed at (young girls). So romance would be the genre of this anime, and shoujo the demographic.

No. At least from the 2 episodes I saw, the show is clearly aimed at a male audience. Shoujos tend to have multiple hot guys competing for the average looking female protagonist. This show has a protagonist that is basically every nerd's dream (good loking, kind, play games etc)
Nino is the objectively superior one, don't @ me

You are talking about reverse harem and not about shoujo. Great example is Kageki Shoujo, where there are no competing males, because we are in a girls only school. Only male characters are the teachers and they are not love interests.

ive seen shoujo as a tag multiple times though? on other anime/manga series, now maybe mal changed how its tagged things since then? but its most def tagged anime and shows as shonen/shoujo/senine josei as those being the target audience, and that being the easiest way to find shows that fit what you look for, correct?

after looking through the site a bit i see the issue, theyve stopped listing shoujo and other things of the like as a tag, and put it as a demographic, though this show doesnt have that listed, it is a new show

a reverse harem can still be a shoujo, brothers conflict for one, fruits basket for another

Shoujo is demographic not genre. There are Shoujos with no romance like  Natsume's Book of Friends, Donten ni Warau,  Oooku  atc.  and thera are Romance Shoujo with one love interest like this one , 3D Kanojo,  My Little Monster, Kimi ni Todoke, Boku To Kimi No Taisetsu Na Hanashi, yubisaki to renren, hayaku shitai futari.

Why does it matter that it's Shoujo?

totally agree with this statement. I argue with my friends about this whole genre vs demographic all the time!

The art style is similar but it does not look that way to me, it was a good mix of romance and comedy, quite enjoyable with no cringe moments

You are talking about reverse heram lol and there are lots of reverse heram targeted towards male audience too. You can check out Romantic Killer which is a shounen reverse heram anime.

Romantic Killer is a reverse harem parody, it's targeted towards men precisely because it makes fun of the typical reverse harem tropes

But at the end of the day it's a reverse heram anime with a Shounen demographic anyway that's not the main topic of discussion. I just wanted to make a correction that shoujo and reverse heram are not the same thing. You should watch/read more shoujo anime/manga to expand your horizons.

Romantic Killer is actually a shoujo though. It says so on the manga cover because it got an award for being best shoujo, so not the best example.

Romantic Killer manga is literally serialized in Shonen Jump+..

but yes, this series is adapted from a shoujo manga.

It can, but it does not make it automatically a shoujo. And that's my point.
If someone ask you about shounen and you start talking about action. That also won't help, because demographic and genre are two different things.

Sorry friend, this is definitely categorized as Shoujo. It's aiming to tell a love story from the female perspective and draw in female audience members who might be able to related or are interested in the romance. This doesn't mean that male audiences cannot enjoy it, and it definitely doesn't mean that your definition nor the obverse definition of the terminology relies on sex appeal. As a great example, I like to point as Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura as very popular Shoujo manga that are beloved by the male audience, and in some cases perhaps there may be a larger male demographic than the latter. Anyway, generalization isn't a good reason to like or dislike something. It's okay to like something that isn't specifically targeted toward you. I'm also enjoying this series very much and I hope that you do as well. :)

Feels shoujo to me. But I'm new to anime. I probably have less than 10 shoujo in my list.

Not a source reader though.

I don't think you guys realize that demographics aren't black-and-white. Just because it was in Shounen Jump+ doesn't mean it's not shoujo. Like I said, it advertises itself as a shoujo manga and the tankoban are published under the Shoujo Beat line (you're free to look it up on Viz if you want).

Romantic Killer is a shoujo that can also appeal to boys.

Likely a Shoujo, but I think it is actually very good because this doesn't feel Shoujo-ish much. I like it, I think both audience will be pleased with this one.

Just because the main character in a romcom is a woman doesnt make the show a shojo. If you ask me, this show is aimed towards boys. Akane is the otaku male’s ideal girl, and Yamada-kun is the otaku male’s ideal self.

No one said that it's a shoujo because the main character in a romcom is a woman lol. It's a shoujo because it was published in shoujo magazine.

No... Yamada is some fujoshi girls dream. A thin, tall, aloof bishounen/hot guy that swoons the FMC.

This is an obvious case of shoujo. For those of you saying it's a demographic, no it's genre aimed at a demographic.

The author herself is into shoujo:
This work will be the first serialization. I like shoujo manga, games, and foreign dramas. She writes manga while battling stiff shoulders. thank you!
