Hii, I have been interested in checking out the games for a few months now but haven't had the time to invest. Is this a good place to get an intro to the series? Thanks c:

how is anyone supposed to answer that question? The anime hasn't even aired yet. But JRPG anime never does justice to the source material and I suspect this will be no exception.

Not really since this story is supposed to take place in between Cold Steel 2 and 3.

I can’t guess. On one hand the main cast for this show is almost entirely new, in a place that we only hear about in dialogue in the games and never visit. It’s not an adaptation of the game’s story as much as an addition to it.
If the anime can have the necessary world building it needs for its own story and characters, to the point that you can watch it with out playing the games then sure, you could start here.
On the other hand, if it doesn’t do that, and instead relies heavily on things you have to know from the games then it won’t be welcoming to newcomers.
I’m certainly interested in this because unlike most anime today, which tends to be just an adaptation of an already existing story. This is something new to add to the source material.
I recommend watching it. If you find yourself confused too often then you’ll have your answer.

Welp, new trailer dropped. Seems like a lot of this will be taking place in Erebonia after all.

Based on its trailers the anime seems to have a pretty big focus on its original cast so I imagine it's made with new audiences in mind, but due to where it takes place on the timeline, it will inevitably spoil Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2. If you don't mind the spoilers for previous games (and assuming the anime is actually good) then I think it's probbaly a decent gateway into the franchise.

But wether you get into Trails with this anime or one of the games, you will eventually have to play every game in the series to get the full story, so I think it's best to just start from the first Trails in the Sky to get the full story in the intended order.

No. Do not start with this anime. Start with either Sky or CS1 and get through CS2 before watching this anime.

The worst spot you could possibly start is with this anime.

Seriously, always start from the very beginning. Start with Trails in the Sky First Chapter. All I can say is you feel bad for Lavi a lot more if you know the entire details of how this anime came to be.

It's probably fine to watch as a stand alone if you don't have any intention to play the games, as the anime will most probably be made to be understood without any prior knowledge. Obviously peoples with prior knowledge will recognise the different character cameos and understand the greater picture, but considering the anime's subject, it won't be needed for the anime itself.

However, you said that you're interested in getting into the game series. In which case, the answer is NO, it isn't a good place since it'll definitely spoil quite a bit Cold Steel 1 and Cold Steel 2.There's not really any possibility it won't. It may spoil even more than that, but we'll have to see the anime to judge. Heavily spoiling CS1 and CS2 however, cannot be avoided.

Good entry points for the series are the first games of each sub series.
IE,

- Trails in the Sky First Chapter (1st game of the franchise, first game of the Sky/Liberl sub series)

- Trails from Zero (4rth game of the franchise, first game of the Crossbell sub series)

- Trails of Cold Steel I (7th game of the franchise, first game of the Erebonia/cold Steel sub series)

- Kuro no Kiseki (no english title yet, no english licence yet either. 11th game of the franchise, first game of the Calvard/Kuro subseries).

... That's the only 4 decent place to start with. Obviously the best of the best is to start with Sky First Chapter, and that's definitely what anyone that intend to play ALL games anyway should do; but for peoples who want to skip the early sub series, well, start with the first game of the earliest sub series that you're interested in playing. So zero if you want to play crossbell, CS1 if you don't want to play Sky and Crossbell, etc.

Only watch the anime once you've finished Cold Steel 2. Anime happens between CS2 and CS3.

Nah worst spot would definitely be Reverie, but it isn't a good one for someone that want to get into the game series, indeed.

Now that we're two episodes into the series and start to have an idea what the anime is like, I really don't think this is a good starting place. The focus is on the original cast as I expected, but it relies really heavily on the games' worldbuilding and you really need to play at least Cold Steel 1 and 2 (but preferably the earlier games too) to understand the politics surrounding North Ambria, and I can't imagine someone finding the anime enjoyable if they're completely lost on the politics since it's such a major focus on the story.

I came back to see if someone know the answer to this after 10 eps. Is completing the games still necessary to watch this anime?

Looks like the rating dropped a lot, not sure if it's because of it is not appealing to new audience or because cold steel fans didn't like this spin-off anime.

Both. It doesn't work for new fans because of the investment and information it requires but it also doesn't work for existing fans because it's just plain bad.

No, it is not. If you want to play the games this is going to worsen the experience. Play the games, then watch this.

Better yet. Play the games and don't bother with this anime.

Hell nah. Anime is garbage and story is kinda like Trails of Cold steel 2.5, which would be the 8th chronological installment in the series
