I really like the vivid colours when beam sabers clash or ignite, and the music really plays up nostalgia for 0079.

Consider me impressed. Sunrise took what was a simple filler episode that was very independent of the rest of the series and tied better to the One Year War.

Big fan of the visuals, but I think it fits certain suits better than others, the zaku's and gm's but the rx 78-2 can look a little out of place too, also think that they may have benefited from updating some more for the character designs. The original gundam had this feel of "we know we are going not have the resources to make a great looking show so let's just make the static shots look good and ignore how they animate", but now this is modern, and they have the capacity to make it animate well certain characters just look of to me, like Sayla's hair for example.

Still enjoyed the film though, not sure on a very high 6 or a low 7, but leaning toward the 7

The film makes the not so great episode, be pretty good. Hits the feels in a lot of notes. We even get to see Bright lay the smack.

I underestimated the power of nostalgia. I really enjoyed this movie. The CGI mobile suits were comparable to Hathaway's Flash. In a sense, the mecha look more like the glorified model kit commercial has always been. I'm not a fan of Gunpla, so this look is just ok in my book.

The director of this movie has an article last year about how he never really blew up and has been floating around in Animation circles. It would be great if he did another anime for 0079, as so many people have been requesting. Hayaku, before all the OG VA's pass away.

Just finished and it was really good for something based on a crap filler episode on the old series.

Funny how they redesign Doan as a giga chad, in the old series he was like a caveman lol. Talking about design i love the character design and movement here, it really gives the classic feels. My only complain are the mecha itself. Some scenes they look good others totally out of the place.

Highlight was the flash back with Bright iconic slap on Amuro, I laughed so hard.

Solid 8/10 movie. And i am still waiting for the full remake, where is it Sunrise?

Just returned from the cinema where I saw in English dub. I can confirm the English dub was a NYAV-post one directed by Stephanie Sheh. Didn't catch all the names but Lucien Dodge returns as Amuro and Keith Silverstein returns as Char. Cucuruz Doan is voiced by Mike Smith.

Really, REALLY good. I was expecting Doan to be some sort of crazy hermit from how I've heard the missing episode described before, but this was a strong, quiet, caring leader kind of guy. The way he interacted with all the kids, as well as Amuro, was great to see. And even the way his old team reacted whenever his name came up spoke volumes about his character.

The music was great, the visuals were absolutely on-point, and while you can tell it was originally a one-off 0079 episode (there's two minor plot contrivances that happen so that the rest of the movie play out) everything flowed together nicely. Dunno how much of a lasting impact it'll have on me, but in general it was about as flawless as one could hope for.

A beautiful remake this is what I would want from any Gundam work, this movie is a dream come true for me and I wish the whole 1979 series get the same treatment

I remember this episode as somewhat out of place in the series, but the movie managed to become an actually well-written story. Something that is still more on a side lines, but tied-up nicely and gives some space to show characters in a more peaceful environment. That said, battle scenes were animated perfectly. I liked how the movie looked overall, and it leaves you with that nostalgic vibe, a pretty satisfying watch.

written like most of Tomino´s Gundam, wich means"meh" at best, but  it´s directed by Yasuhiko wich translates into a decent watch.

This was just kind of okay.  Really weird that Tomino was so embarrassed by this episode back in the day.  And now that they try to make a really nice looking version they don't make this movie hand drawn instead of very average CGI

Wasn't sure what to expect from this as I don't really remember the original episode much, but I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Very nostalgic, I kind of want more of these. Miss Gundam shows like this tbh.

Interesting adaptation, although it was excessive in minutes!!! For a few minutes the story did not advance and was a rewind of the scenes!!!
It has lacked more action and less drama

The quality of the current animation is appreciated, although there are old touches so as not to clash, but for my taste, it has lacked greater realism.

Interesting to see Amuro and company again, it brings back good memories.

I believe that dedicating a film that lasts many minutes to an episode of only 24 minutes that has never been released, gives the measure of how much has been aimed at giving more depth and depth to a single event in the anime series. Did they succeed? Well enough, but not quite. This is not a criticism, but saying everything about this single historical event, and doing it well would have meant not making a film, as long as you can imagine, but making a real anime series or a mini-series, oh well ! However, in the narrative arc there is room for every situation and even if the pace is slow, this too is used to describe a story, there is no need only for action, despite the fact that we are talking about an anime that concerns the Gundam saga. Excellent in terms of graphics and the same also in terms of soundtrack. Those who criticize Sunrise mean that they don't understand much, and I say this as a non-fan but as an impartial user and I believe that in Japanese animation, this animation studio and this anime series are to be thanked, which gave that something that without it would have made the Japanese animation a little poorer in many terms. Pleasant this film, as far as I'm concerned I enjoyed it to the end and without any particular regrets, my rating is 8/10.

Doan is a traitor. I can't respect the guy. Why even kill his former team if he fudged the missiles anyway?

He's a traitor to war criminals who kill civilians en masse and wanted to launch a nuclear armageddon. Doan made the best decision he could, given his past involvement in their (war) crimes, and rehabilitated himself. Betraying evil is an honorable thing to do. And, well, he may have fudged the missiles but killing his former team was literally just self-defense (and defense of the children), otherwise they'd be all dead.

Thanks for the link! Saw somewhere that it's until August 17, you should watch it too.

Honesly didn't expect to like it as much as I did, I haven't seen the original infamous episode but they surely turned it into a touching antiwar story about rehabilitation (I guess the original was as well, but with worse animation and pacing). Yasuhiko's designs are lovely as always, each character is animated nicely (faces, poses, mannerisms, etc), a pleasure to watch (especially the island children). Amuro's growth from a rather passive observer is also a good fit into the larger narrative.

Applying black-and-white thinking to Gundam, give me a break. There is plenty of shows you can watch with a clear bad guy/good guy divide - Gundam is not one of them.
