That's My Atypical Girl
| It's been a few months since I found out about the official name and I still hate it with a passion. It's way too safe and beats around the bush, while not fitting the tone of the series at all. It's so wacky and like mentioned here, overly comedic for a series that's anything but that. Asper Girl is shorter, simpler, clearer, more memorable and more importantly, actually fitting the tone and theme of the series a lot more. No idea why the official name was decided to be the way it is but it's such a shame. |

I wish they kept "Asper Girl" because I think it conveys just enough of what the story is about and not sound like a wacky Takagi-san esque manga. i think the translator explanation was that the specific words often become prejudiced and slowly lost it's meaning as it often used as insult then become offensive. think of words "retarded" or "autistic" or "moron" or "mongo" or "schizo". and translator had to avoid in case "asper" would be ended the same way. so they chose the most language neutral as possible. yes it sucks, but it is what it is. can't really blame them for that. |

| Guys, I think you’re forgetting the origins of the Asperger’s name. It has fallen out of favor with people who have learned about certain connections its namesake may have had to certain evil historical figures. It’s not about shoving autism aside. They are probably just aware of the fact that many people think that Asperger’s is a problematic name because the guy it was named after was possibly a horrible person who may have actually endangered autistic people, so Kodansha didn’t want to invoke *that* kind of criticism from audiences who would have otherwise enjoyed the work. They cannot risk losing readers for a digital-only series. |

In the U.S, retard and autistic are/were actual medical terminology to describe people with diagnosed mental conditions.“Retard” isn’t necessarily a bad word but people use it as a slur and it lost all meaning so now we’ve had to move on from it 🙄 it’s really annoying how that happens. | I think I might know the reason for that, Asperger's syndrome is no longer an official diagnosis in the DSM and is now under ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. The term is still used in some countries and people still identify with this label and that's fine, Even I was diagnosed and identified with the term Aspergers myself before it changed to ASD a few years ago. But due to the removal of the term from the DSM as well as the history behind the name "Aspergers Syndrome" being pretty grim (I won't go into it but you can look it up), I think the translation team decieded to change the name to avoid controversy. |

I understand your frustration tbh, tho I personally like the use of “atypical” in the title for other reasons its literally never happened before to me, people call each other retards as an exaggerated way to say idiot as far as I know, even i've called people retards in place of words like "moron" or "imbecile" so im seriously confused at why all of a sudden its seen as a slur, i've literally never seen it being used as an insult for mentally ill people, like ones with down syndrome or autism of bipolar etc. most people use psycho, or schizo, or just autist to refer to us. We live in different countries so the experience may be different. I will say. People used retard as a slur a lot more often when I was a kid, in the early 2000’s. It was stigmatized at some point between then and now. So people don’t say it as much these days. If you transport back to like 2003 though people were flinging the word around left and right |
