It certainly wasn’t bad by any means, but it was just simply good, not great. Was it the overhype it got from manga readers that raised the bar to levels unable to be met to a certain extent? While there were certainly some touching moments (especially the nice message to those who suffer irl from communication disorders, I mean, I’m a mess with public speaking), the overall feel wasn’t anything to be amazed about.

The comedy was ok, I didn’t have anything I really audibly laughed at like more comedy-centric shows, a lot of the characters were just stereotypes already seen in a hundred other shows (Yamai was the worst one of them by far, I think most would agree), and I know a lot of ppl in Japan had a problem with Komi because while, yes, she had a communication disorder, at least she was a beauty by most standards, which for many people who have low esteem (which was the main issue for Japanese ppl), didn’t click with Komi’s character, on top of her also being athletic to boot.

I personally enjoyed watching a show that came out around the same time (iirc) called Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie. Although obviously unrealistic in it’s own standard, I personally liked the character dynamics far more, as well as the characters themselves. The story from that one can be debated whether it’s good or bad, in comparison to Komi, but that’s a completely separate topic, so I’ll leave it there.

Anyway, what did yall think? Again, I want to ensure ppl understand, I didn’t dislike Komi-san, it just wasn’t spectacular and I think other shows in the same vein have done it better. Don’t roast me lmao

I also found it just okay. I think the premise sounded a lot better than what we actually got. I wonder if it will pick up in later seasons or if it just had a big fan base that overhyped it.

Tbh I found the show to be extremely boring and repetitive at times.
Specially with that narrator reminding us what Comyushou is EVERY SINGLE TIME.
The restive OST was really annoying to me as well.

Also not a big fan of the character designs, most of the characters just look weird and Komi doesn’t even look that cute, specially with that non existent mouth.

I feel like this would be an anime that I would enjoy if I was 14, cause it really did feel childish at times with all the unfunny jokes and messages of friendship and all that (not that’s it bad)

see personally I believe and to an extent the truth is people rate anime based on their entertainment, like example rising of shield hero season 2, most said it was mid as in 7.5 but proceeded to rate it a 4 or 3, because of expectations and lack of entertainment, similarly demon slayer or tonikaku kawaii don't have very complex stories or insane backstories and world development but since they are highly entertaining they have great scores in their respective generes so in this case komi San is simply very funny for me and also entertaining as well and so is the case with many watchers so it's highly praised , but if you don't like it it's your choice, because opinion difference is what makes us human.

I thought it started slow, but I ended up giving the first season an 8/10 since I really enjoyed it by the end.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it the greatest show ever, but the relationship between Komi and Tadano is very well written and carries the show.

I was in high school a decade ago, so it could also just be nostalgia for young romance that works for me.

Edit: Oh yeah, the narrator is my most hated character in all anime.

Is it good? Yes, definitely. As a matter of fact I scored season 1 an 8/10 and season 2 a 7/10.
Is it a masterpiece as some fans claim it to be? Certainly not. The gag of everyone worshipping Komi as if she was some sort of goddess was funny the first 4-5 episodes, but then it got old real quick. I thought Malty from Shield Hero had the award for the worst female character in anime, but then we had a new champion when Yamai showed up.

I'm gonna say it, and I don't care if people cancel me or not: Najimi is one of those characters that are really annoying but important for the plot to advance

Starts off good but gets old in season 2. It's hard to sympathize with Komi because her anxiety seems to be selective and everyone already loves her. The episodes become very boring in season 2 and the comedy always misses. Komi herself isn't an interesting character and the show is carried by her friends.

Season 1 was actually pretty good imo but slowly died in Season 2. Probably the overall feel/vibe was too repetitive as we’ve gotten used to the concept (girl has communication problems and stuff yk)

Dude Malty is one good character, Her role is of Villian and she does that perfectly.

Even the show itself was top tier isekai as long as Matly was the main antagonist and after that starts the "Downfall of the shield hero".

Either she is evil or good doesn't matter, if her role is to be hated and she does it perfectly then shes a good and nicely written character.
While for Yamai, she is not written to be hated instead she is supposed to be funny which misses big time as shes clearly one of most annoying characters of all anime.

I didn't like this show at all. You can see that form my review and rating for it. The things I found very annoying was the narrator examining everything ALL THE TIME and how gross most of Komi's "friends". If people acted that way outside of this anime, they would be in jail. And some of the jokes just weren't very funny and it was always the same jokes all the time. "Oh, it's another joke about how Komi can't communicate. Oh, hahaha, so funny!".

I really like this show but am fully aware it's pretty flawed, I put it on the lower end of 6. Komi and Tadano as characters are the best written in the show so far, and there are a few other good ones, but they're not as well thought-out.

I'm probably going to get hate for this, but I just didn't like the anime, and it doesn't make sense to me at all. That said, I've only watched season 1 of the anime, and I have not read the manga, so I have a very limited perspective of the series. If season 2 or the manga doesn't have these issues, I might give them a chance.

At least for me, I felt that the anime had a strong first episode, but it was just downhill from there. The first episode is able to set everything up about the series well, and the interactions between Tadano and Komi writing on the board was just beautiful. I admittedly had some high expectations getting into season 1 of the anime, and the first episode kind of skyrocketed them. However, everything afterwards was kind of disappointing to me. It gets super repetitive after a while, and the comedy just falls flat for me. At some point, I just got annoyed, and I felt like I had to force myself to finish the anime.

The concept is neat on paper, but in practice, it just doesn't make sense. Komi basically cannot talk at all, but she is extremely attractive, athletic, smart, and apparently charming enough to be worshipped like a goddess. At least to me, she feels like a Mary Sue with a quirk of being shy tacked onto her. Perhaps I'm being too critical of her character because I'm extremely tired of seeing shy girls who have absolutely no depth to them, and the only reason they have anxiety is to be quirky or cute. It makes absolutely no sense to me as to why she can't hold a conversation to save her life even though she has all these things going for her, and she's surrounded by simps. The anime would make a lot more sense if she was unpopular and had actual reasons for having social anxiety.

Tadano is where the anime just starts to feel like a wish fulfillment fantasy. Tadano seems to get a lot of praise, but he just feels like a blatant, unapologetic self-insert to me. Like the anime doesn't even attempt to hide it as his gimmick is being the most average person in the history of the universe. He's the straight man in a series filled with weird characters. But just because it's a huge joke in the series that he's an average joe self insert doesn't mean it takes away from the fact that he's a self insert. So now the story becomes "self-insert male protagonist gets otherwise perfect female protagonist with crippling anxiety who has to fully rely on male protagonist to overcome flaws that were really just quirks to begin with to make her look cuter." Maybe I'm overlooking a lot of good things about him, but I just think he's a very overrated protagonist.

The side characters (besides Najimi) are easily my least favorite part about the anime. Not only are they all super one dimensional and tropey, but they're all incredibly annoying as well. Everyone shitting on Tadano for basically no reason is just extremely infuriating to watch. Yamai is without a doubt the worst character in the series. I need to admit that yandere characters are a huge guilty pleasure of mine, but the fact that she still managed to piss me off speaks volumes on how annoying she is. It's not even just me, a lot of people who like yandere characters seem to make an exception to her. She's a combination of two tropes: the yandere and the psycho predator lesbian. Despite how shallow she is, she still manages to have more depth than 90% of the cast. It would be fine if we didn't have to see these characters as much, but the anime just shoves these characters in your face all the fucking time. I don't care about any of them, I only want to see Tadano, Komi, and Najimi.

I'm probably being unfair to this series and very hypocritical, but I don't understand why this series is loved so much. There's probably more to this series than I claim there is, and maybe the manga is way better than the anime. But if the only reason people like this series is "uwu I can relate to cute shy girl," then I don't think I'm gonna bother with the later seasons of the anime or the manga.

Ngl… I’m 🤏🏻 this away to drop this… I mean, it’s not a bad anime or anything like that… as many of you said, it’s kinda ok the adaptation… but from where I am, Netflix screwed the whole hype with not being late with the uploads a couple of weeks (If I don’t have bad memory, it’s was 2 weeks late in the US in comparison to Japan) well, here they took a little bit too much time… sometimes being a goddamn month away from japan…. And sometimes the schedule wasn’t even defined. The “New episodes every week” banner was a complete lie…

So here’s the TL;DR: Netflix as always, made me lose the hype on this adaptation. That’s why it’s an ok. Bad formula from Netflix.

Edit 1: might go and read the manga to check waddup

For me it was good as well but not really. I gave it a 7 because it was little over ok. The idea of having a person struggling to communicate is actually nice and I quite liked it at the start. But it felt like something was off. The comedy it has is just fine and the characters are theyre like in every anime type of characters so it wasnt that great.

I’ve read through all the manga that’s been released in English so far and I think the anime will seriously pick up in season 3. This is when new main characters get introduced and start to cause more tension within the group. Personally I liked season 1 (though I understand how it gets repetitive at times). Season 2 was just alright in my opinion but I’m really excited for season 3! :)

No opinion is “valid,” that’s why it’s called an opinion. I could say the same to yours, doesn’t make it any less valid or more, it’s a difference in opinion, that’s all it is. If you don’t like it, or agree, well, that’s a different matter, but again, my view/opinion of something is not worth any less or any more than yours or anyone else’s. Keep that in mind, and let’s not be rude. As one of my fav ytubers, James A Janisse says, “Be good ppl.”

Anyways, thanks for your opinion, and I guess agree to disagree then.

Maybe comparatively to a lot of a romcoms from several years back, but I’d disagree, I actually think a decent amount of romcoms are stepping up their game recently, like Dress Up Darling, Shikimori, Nagatoro, Kaguya is a big name one, and several others. Of course, I’m those are opinion based, but they have garnered a fair amount of popularity I would say. Idk, maybe it’s just me lol

for both komi-san and shikimori, they massively screwed up the adaptations. just go read the manga, it’s a lot better.

I haven’t read Shikimori, but the Komi adaptation wasn’t that bad

It was always a 6.5/10 series for me..... It is a well made and well animated mediocre anime
