It's unreal how much the tennis sucks in this, you'd think after all this practice (14 episodes in) and even some match play, she wouldn't be constantly falling over herself, getting hit by fifty million tennis balls and even tripping over onto the net. And then on the other hand, she can magically play amazing again and even win a SF match lol. SO inconsistent. Oh, that's not even mentioning the actual tennis animation on display. And I thought Baby Steps was bad here. At one point they literally have a girl serve, the ball lands nowhere near the service box and the receiver misses the return. And they call it an ace. This happens multiple times. Everything else is just reused scenes and slideshow content.

But anyway, I don't think I've seen an anime so stuck in it's era, as is Aim for the Ace. Unbelievable melodrama over the cheapest and trivial of things, always crying and falling over reactions, hideous art and animation, shoddy sound effects, etc. Imagine if this got an adaptation today, makes me appreciate how far anime has come.

I don't believe there has been sufficient reasoning as to why the coach even picked her out from the rest of the pack at the beginning either, a couple of characters say she shows great tenacity and mental resilience, but that really hasn't been the case at all. It's just been constant fear, self loathing and crying so far. Yes, she's still there and playing, even after all of the ribbing from her fellow club members, but she has the backing of a "seemingly" great coach and even Madame Butterfly at one stage, so, so what? Not enough reason to start developing her when she showed no signs of gifted tennis ability, even now lol. And when she suddenly does display this miraculous toughness every now and then in a match, it comes across as poor writing, thanks to the lack of development in this department throughout the series so far. The pay off is poor.

The best thing about this series so far is the Opening sequence and the unironic comedy, thanks to how outdated it really is.

Only watch this if you're interested in the history of anime and some of the first of it's kind, otherwise, watch Baby Steps instead. It's literally everything this is, (the "character growth" lmao, the little romance sub plot, the same sport) but ten times better.

I don't have much to contribute to here, since I'm almost completely in lockstep with you opinion-wise, despite being more of a romance/drama lover, and the sort of person who won't touch sports anime otherwise. The sequel OVA is much better, and allegedly Shin Ace wo Narae (I've yet to find confirmation that fansubs exist for it) does almost everything better. The intended comedy of the anime (Scarce as it was) was fun, and a good chunk of the character interactions are enjoyable, but this anime was a rather terrible representation of the sport. I couldn't even tell what the fuck was happening most of the time, due to the disgusting amount of reused animation, like holy shit, if there's only 19 minutes of animation, and you're going to recycle whatever's needed to make it fill those last few minutes, don't recycle random bits for the actual tennis!

I did at least have fun jabbing at how funny some scenes are out of context, like how halfway through episode 5, one of the characters says "Can't you see that? Oka-san has already developed her skill, and it shows!", then this happens immediately after

No, I'm not interested. I'm willing to give the remake a chance if it's ever translated.
