Well, I take back all my reservations about this season. WOW! This episode truly delivered on so many different levels. It was truly fascinating to behold.

When this arc started and all the "random" females were shown, I did mention that they might be relevant to the main story in some way, and turns out they were. I feared they would just remain as episodic features, which would be quite a coincidence, but thankfully this explains their appearance completely.

Tomoe is looking old for once, which I really appreciate as the entire timeline with her looking the same age was quite confusing. But all that brings up the real question of the season:

Is Tomoe Lupin's real mother?

Well, at first we thought yes, and then were told that she wasn't. But of course it's more complicated. She believes that she is his real mother, but Lupin for whatever reason doesn't. So this can still end up going either way. While it's leaning towards her being his real mother at the moment, the final episode can turn everything we know upside down, like this episode did. I would personally prefer she isn't his mother, but if they do canonize her as his mother, then I hope they give us more info about their relationship and more info about her as a character in the final episode.

The whole hypnosis thing would normally be quite a stretch to work on Lupin and a pretty cliché plot device, but the way it was spread out through so many countries, languages, people, and possibly even years, it's such a grand plan in vision that it actually manages to come across as plausible.

This is how episodic Lupin episodes should always be done. Entertaining tales but with some relevance to the overall story. The animation wasn't that great this episode, but it was supposed to be a more tension filled episode, so it didn't detract too much from the enjoyment.

And we got the Moriarty cameo which some people expected to be tied into this arc. Hopefully Sherlock and Lily can also make an appearance in the season finale.

Next week should be awesome. Hopefully it can stick the landing. This might very well be my favorite episode of the season so far. I love big reveals like this.'

Edit: I forgot to mention that it was nice seeing Fujiko opening up her true feelings for once. We rarely ever see her be honest about anything, and the way she tried helping Lupin come to his senses and seemingly not getting through to him really hurt to watch. Of course, she even says that it isn't her nature to let a treasure out of her grasp, and Lupin is her greatest treasure, but you can tell that she was being intentions were pure and sincere. Honestly, it provides a sharp contrast between her affection for Lupin and Tomoe's affection for him. It was really well done.

This! This is what I had in mind when the first teaser poster was revealed! I absolutely love the season 2 story and this episode only solidifies my love for it. A hypnotized Lupin tries to kill the gang, neglects Fujiko and it's revealed that Tomoe was his mother and has manipulated every woman character in the series so that she can unlock Lupin's memories of her. Now I'm not convinced that all this is true but still I'm glad to admit I failed to predict most things in this story, unlike in season 1 where the only twist not obvious from a mile away was Raven not existing. Also every time Lupin drives his SSK is a win. Absolutely loved this episode, I hope that episode 24 will have the series go out with a much needed bang after all the season 1 mediocrity.

Have we ever seen Fujiko give Lupine a real kiss, without any ulterior motives or subterfuge?!?!

The kiss they shared at the Part 5 finale was genuine, also the one in the same part when Lupin proposes to her while they're falling dressed as pirates. I think their kiss at the end of Legend of the Gold of Babylon seems preety genuine too and I could also make a case for their kiss in Mystery of Mamo.

the sherlock stuff with the underground society in the uk story was way more interesting but they decided to put that into the middle of the season. I feel this is a weaker lupin show, compared to the rest.
it all comes down to preference in the end. maybe I shouldn't have binged it, this is the first time I marathoned a lupin show.

Best episode of the season by far! The opening was so f'n good. As was the ending reveal. I wish the entire season had been entirely about building up to Tomoe.

The plot really thickens in this episode as Lupin comes face to face with his "mother" through a form of hypnosis that was planted deep inside of his subconsciousness. So Tomoe had to use a web of deception using various women from previous episodes that were from different countries in order for Lupin to remember the poem he shared with Tomoe. I wonder what item that she stole from the vault was the proof that Lupin and Tomoe were mother and son?

After giving time for this episode to sink in, I feel like as good as the twists were, it could have went even a step further. What if the last brainwashing word came not from Zenigata's female companion, but from Fujiko herself? What if Fujiko this whole time was brainwashed by Tomoe? This would explain why she has always been by his side for decades and is obsessed with him. This would also add so much more emotional weight. This could have even gone another step further and the whole crew including Zenigata could have been revealed to be brainwashed to stick with Lupin through the decades. Wouldn't that be an insane twist? Or do you think that would be too insane and would inherently ruin all the previous Lupin stories and characters and wouldn't be worth it to do even if it could make this whole twist even crazier?

That would be an incredible twist that noone would ever have seen coming but I feel like it would sit really badly with the majority of the fans if it was suddenly revealed that the gang where together all those years because of that. Maybe a more tame approach would be that Tomoe could have been responsible for Lupin meeting Fujiko in the first place. I think the season 2 story doesn't need many fixes, especially if it hits the landing. I wish they had taken a darker approach to the Holmes story though. Maybe have Lupin actually kill Watson and then live to regret it, it would make his rivarly with Holmes and interactions with Lilly so much better, and you could maybe have the gang have second thoughts about Lupin upon hearing about it.

iirc zenigata is related to lupin, different moms or dads? wonder if it was retconned by now. that's plenty of reason for his obsession.

I know I will regret thinking about this, but I think fujiko is the wildcard here.
lupin's mindscape started to distort after fujiko's kiss, he's fighting against the hypnosis but she was the one who pulled him back. she's also the first person he had a conversation with after the stuff kicked in.
there's no way in hell that tomoe is lupin's mom either. they'll end it in "who knows?" at worst.

It would have been amazing. That said I wouldn't go to the extreme and brainwash everyone. I would prefer there to be some level of authenticity with most of the crew. But one other person, either Fujiko or Zenigata, would have been perfect in that role as neither are in Lupin's inner circle as Goemon or Jigen are.

Yeah, most likely that would be many fans reactions. Retconning an entire series like that can easily backfire. I think the disappointment to the lack of the darker approach is the fault of the season's advertising. It falsely set expections.

I don't recall that ever being mentioned anywhere, and if it was ever hinted at, it definitely hasn't been canonized as far as I know. I really hope it doesn't end in a "who knows" situation, but it very well might.

Understandable. Haha, Fujiko and Zenigata both would have been perfect. Zenigata just "coincidentally" never being able to catch Lupin for good? All part of Tomoe's plan, haha.

Tying all those fun episodes to the Tomoe plot was brilliant. I just wish the Sherlock stuff hadn't happened. Even if the finale sticks the landing the best I can give this season is 7 to 8.

I guess they can be bothered to animate cars instead of those cg monstrosities we had to put up with from last season to here. They just have to be an SSK to get well drawn animation.

The plot is getting interesting. I'm not sure whether I want Tomoe to be the real mother. I didn't like how the backstory revelations were handled in Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna, so I'm afraid something similar will happen here.

On the one hand I'm definitely interested to know something more about Lupin's origins, but maybe it's better shrouded in mystery. Some earth-shattering revelation may be interesting for an episode, but then they'd have the problem of whether to address it in all the future iterations of the character. Potentially it could create a huge mess and then we'd have to rethink everything that's happened to the character. I'm not sure the producers would want to take that risk.

The hypnotism device is a bit convoluted, but that also leaves room for interpretation. It could all just be Tomoe's machinations, including Lupin's belief that he's her son. And whether Lupin himself believes it, we don't really know. It wouldn't be the first time that the great deceiver just pretends to be controlled or to believe something.

So she's been brainwashing all those women for all those years just to plant keywords into the different language centers of his brain to trigger his own deep-seated brainwashing.. that sure is... a plan. But given the nature of Lupin I don't know if we'll get hard confirmation on if she's actually his real mom or just convinced she is.

Also, the English VA they cast for Moriarty is perfect. lmao Khoi Dao is fantastic at playing soft-spoken evil(?) masterminds.
