| This series doesn't pull punches. Killing off a group of innocent mercilessy is a cheap yet effective way to boost the threat level of villains. Meanwhile the heroes got to flex in a different way   We know and love it. |

| Very, very standard stuff and for me, this was one of the odd times I wasn't too overly fond of seeing these established tropes. The number thing was executed well though, and it's nice getting a sense of scale, but not overtly interesting. There were two tidbits I liked in the first half though. One, I like that we didn't get to see Heisuke's score, he's certainly higher than Touma, but what about Dora/Kusanagi? They're in Samurai Officer scoring points, though I suspect Heisuke is still currently higher. The other bit was the character at the end who thought they were so cool, looking forward to seeing that guy getting formally introduced to the main cast. Does sort of feel like the type of character that might die, but it remains to be seen whether this will be the type of series that will kill of named characters. The other stuff with the villains, I just don't find any of these characters interesting, and I preferred the more monstrous designs as opposed to the more directly humanoid one. I do like the fact that we got introduced to group, and their personalities have been established. The personalities themselves are sort of one note (bloodthirsty/angry, drunk/glutton, annoying) but it helps them stand out quickly. Kanbeh is the only one right now who holds any intrigue for me. There's four of them established, and with Dora, Heisuke, & Touma we got at least three for one-on-one battles. Wonder if Mr. Starry-eyed will be the fourth, or perhaps Ginchiyo, or someone we haven't met before. |
