I think he still needs to come into his own. The whole "having friends" thing is still new to him so he's still pretty awkward. Once he gets the swing of things in the social interactions department, I think he'll be a more enjoyable character on screen. Overall, he does feel realistic and I think he'll have a nice coming of age story.

There are already 50+ replies but I want to give my 2cents anyway as a manga reader (up to date with the official SE English releases)

Gojo-kuns the best. He's realistic (within the exaggerated style of emotions in this show), and he's too sweet. An absolute cutie to boot.

Young Gojo-kun is where most of his development has been shown - why he is the way he is, the tenets he lives by.

As someone who hasn't read a lot of /romance focused/ mangas like this he's a breath of fresh air compared to the typical anime MC whose a cocky asshole know-it-all.

I actually like Gojou better than Marin.
Marin seems at first glance a bunch of waifu tropes mixed together to make an endearing character, and Gojou seems like the real kid in this show, with a lot more natural reactions to the world around him than the ones I see in the other characters.
I'd say it's not like.a self insert in the anime world, but more like an insert of a real person in some anime scenario.

As the one who follow the manga. He is not gay. He himself has feelings but didn't have a courage because he is a shy person, for Marin. Marin has feelings for Gojou as well wait 'til her inner dialogue happens.

An interesting character that I think will change throughout the show.

I like Gojou a lot. He is generic in the fact that he's a nice guy but a loner (typical MC things), but on the other hand he's extremely driven in multiple aspects (his own hobby, schoolwork and cosplay for Kitagawa). Even his hobby/prospective profession is pretty niche.

When people call him a self-insert MC I kinda disagree. Most of us:
1. Have a at least a couple of good friends
2. Have considerably more "everyday" hobbies
3. Certainly don't have his level of drive or ability to juggle multiple tasks
4. Have the hottest girl at your high school (or woman at your college or place of work) appreciate your non-standard hobby and work ethic, as well as almost actively pursue you

Gojo-kun seems to have a mixed reception, especially compared to Marin's universal acclaim. How do you feel about Gojo-kun?

If necessary, specify if you've an anime-only watcher, or if you've also read the manga.

Anime only. He’s great because he feels very realistic.

He has a “unique” hobby and no friends - true - but he is a completely normal guy. He’s intelligent, driven, and caring. This episode especially, you can see him trying to balance family with studies with his own hobby and finally with his commitment to helping his new friend. It’s overwhelming for him and the way he reacted to that felt very realistic. I really like all the layers to his character.

I really dont see any reason for people to complain about him. For a rom-com, this is probably one of better written main characters if you ask me.

I couldn't agree more. Gojo definitely feels more realistic than some of the male leads I've been seeing recently. I mostly see folks (especially from the younger generation) complain whenever a male character isn't assertive or has insecurities, always quick to deem them as "weak" and will even use buzzwords like "simp" or "beta-male". Even though every single one of us, male, female, or other, has insecurities on some level. It's what makes us human. There's nothing "self-insert" or "simpy" about this character.

The opening scene in Gojo-kun's past where that girl scolded him for his hobby hit home on a personal level. As a guy with "unique" interests myself, when I was younger I've always been told things like "Boys are supposed to be into this" or "Boys aren't supposed to like that stuff". So seeing a character deal with ignorance on that level is what drew me in. And from I've seen in these first four episodes, Gojo-kun has been characterized really well. I definitely felt his struggles and that's what you want for your protagonist.

After Kitagawa learned of Gojo's hobby and when he inquired about her interest in eroge, she responded by asking "Does being a girl or a boy matter when you really like something?" That helped him realize that if you're really into something, embrace it. Thus forming an instant bond between the two. I gotta tell ya, both this series and Akebi-chan have been making me smile like an idiot lately. Lol

Just another self insert cowardly akward pathetic stuttering loser...  only the most sad sack bastards who cant even look in the direction of a female with having a geekwad spaz attack and freaking the fuck out. honestly in my whole life i have never come across a single person in my whole life even the bottom tier losers you kick in the hallway when they get in the way that were even remotely even close to as fucked skeered and spazzy as gojo.  I know anime goes a lil over the top but a lot of time you can still think of someone that matches the profile but gogjo (along with like 90% of the any anime so called wanna be half ass male mc in the past 5-6yrs) i have come to the conclusion that it must be a jap hardcore mega beta bitch akward basement dwelling otaku/incel type thing.

ngl i started this show now at ep 2 hope he gets better cuz all this wimpy shy nonsense is annoying ive seen this type of character to many times, cant we get a confident male lead with a bit of personality thats all we need but seeing everyone hype him up makes me wanna see how he turns out after i finish this show, its ok to be a lil awkward but bro is too awkward with even tho he looks decent as someone said in this thread i lowkey thought he was gay he just acts too much like a lil wuss but let me see if i am wrong

Only watched the anime but i feel like gojo is a lot more three dimensional than your regular clueless mc, although clueless about marins feelings towards him, he actually seems respectful and intelligent and genuinely kindhearted in that he wanted to help marin for the sake of helping her and nothing more. I also like the depth with his past, like how he doesn't overuse the word beautiful unless he has to and how his love for making Hina dolls is very similar to marins love for cosplaying.
