I watched season 1 (Bakemonogatari) long ago and... not to bash on the show but I didn't find it that great.
Anyway for some reason I find the cover girl for this season very interesting, also Suruga seems to be a major character here (she was my favorite from season 1).
So is it worth it to just jump onto this right away or do I have to watch the whole show by order of release? (Which I probably won't if that's the case).

Yes, but if you didn’t like bakemonogatari you probably won’t like this

You should watch the prequels, but you seem set on not doing that so just watch it. I doubt you’ll enjoy this much though if you can’t bear to watch the rest of the series.

I don't dislike the show, I just don't see myself sitting through 3+ seasons of it, if this was season 2 (or even 3) I probably would've watched it.

Anyway, seems like you guys already gave me an answer, thank you for the quick replies :D Hopefully I'll find an incentive to watch the prequels and will like the show someday, but for now I'll put it off.

Also a quick note: The main reason I thought it might be possible to watch this season without its prequels is because one of my friends watched it back when it was airing, not knowing it was part of a long series (crazy, right?) and he liked it.

Yes and not trying to be a dick but it's pretty obvious that's like starting an anime from the last season.

I don't think there would be much point to watching this if you haven't seen what comes before it. Also "prequel" is kind of a silly term to use here. Hanamonogatari takes place after this anime but should be watched before it. If you do continue Monogatari either watch it in release order or LN order. If you plan to skip stuff then just don't even bother with the franchise at all.

I'm referring to "prequels" according to MAL, didn't really check all the titles and release dates, but thanks for the heads up.

It's not obvious, a lot of shows are watchable out of order, and this one didn't seem to have a long-going story arc (at least based on season 1), every character had their own arc.

Well the author said in Kizumonogatari's books that there's no specific watch order. However if you'd like to watch owari straight away. I reccomend at least watching Kizumonogatari first because it gives a lot of context and is a fan favourite. Personally I think you're missing out on a lot of information skipping but as a stand alone story Owarimonogatari mostly holds its own. Other than connections between nekomonogatari white at the end.

The Monogatari series is one big mosaic, there is no valid reason to watch owarimonogatari without watching it’s prequels.
I wouldn’t recommend skipping straight to the end of the story without watching the actual story.

I would leave owari for close to last, if you want something different/better than bake you can watch nise (very ecchi) or you can watch monogatari second season which has a rating very close to owari.
DONDAKE!!

You're not wrong some shows are special but I find the monogatari series watch order pretty straight forward.

Kizumonogatari is the movie trilogy right? Yeah I'd totally watch that, also if it's really that good then maybe it'll motivate me to go back and watch the whole series.
Thanks man, that was very helpful!

I have no doubt it is, but I had no way of learning that before you guys told me, is my point.

So all your answers tell me I shouldn't watch Owari without its sequels, I decided to put it off for now, and I'll consider watching Kizumonogatari (maybe the first movie), and depending on how good it is I may decide to watch the whole series by proper order.
Thank you all for your replies.

Monogatari is actually pretty special in the fact that it was released achronologically, which not many anime have been.

watch the kizu movies 100%
you can watch them now since they're prequels to bake and were originally released 2nd out of the light novels.
they're the most action packed and have the flashiest animation of the series by far (being movies and all).
watch the series in release order or not at all, owari doesn't make sense if you haven't. even if you read synopses, there'll be no payoff because you're not invested in the characters. this series is all about the characters.
you'd also be missing a ton of character introductions.
Ougi (girl on cover) is introduced earlier and the mystery around her is built up in a great way before you even get into owari and her character really gets going.

also you might want to rewatch bake if you watched the tv release with only 12 episodes (i.e. the version on crunchyroll) because it was re-released on Blu-ray with drastically improved quality and the full 15 episodes.
