There have been quite a few posts on here, and elsewhere, about how unrealistic Souma's reign is in How a Realist Hero Rebuilt a Kingdom. Questions can be rationalized, such as how Souma managed to transform Elfrieden so rapidly or how come the prior administration couldn’t manage the kingdom as efficiently as Souma.

First and foremost, I will use South Korea following the Korean War as an exemplar of a country that has experienced rapid and tremendous growth under a dictatorship. Very few countries have developed at such a quick pace and continued to have sustainable growth for more than two decades. South Korea's miracle growth can be attributed to its industrialization process and dictatorship.

Similarly, Elfrieden is an autocracy, and this enables Souma to govern the Kingdom with little to no opposition for the most part. This system of government has facilitated the implementation of many economic and societal reforms. Moreover, Souma utilizes Machiavelli's principles by focusing on improving the well-being of his people and centralizing the government.

Now how does this relate to South Korea? Historically, after the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. In 1960, its GDP per capita was only $79, which was lower than many Sub-Saharan African countries. It wasn't until a military coup, that the financial status of the country began to change. After the coup, a military dictator began to industrialize the country by transitioning South Korea's agricultural based economy to a manufacturing export economy. As a result, South Korea is now one of the world's richest countries and an international economic powerhouse, and the dictator's governance ultimately laid the foundation for economic development.

From South Korea's example, just one man with absolute power was able to transform an entire country’s economic system, and as such, we can draw parallels between this and How a Realist Hero Rebuilt a Kingdom.

Elfrieden is actually in a relatively optimal geographical position. The country does not border the demon domain, so there is no immediate threat outside of one particular nation. It has a good amount of natural resources and human capital to sustain its industries. However, it lacks proper administration to capitalize on these advantages.

Many of the upper echelons of the Kingdom were corrupted. This was discovered when Souma initiated a large-scale audit and discovered countless embezzlements that took place prior to his ascension to the throne. It stands to reason that many of the problems that plagued Elfrieden were either ignored or intentionally created. It is also worth noting that there was a strong adherence to the status quo from the prior government, so any extreme proposals were likely met with resistance.

One of the first problems we encountered in the series was a famine caused by the overproduction of cash crops. Instead of growing subsistence crops, the nation was growing cotton to appeal to market demands at the time. As a result, Elfrieden had to rely on imports from other nations. This was not financially sustainable, and Souma had to take a trade deficit to convert most of the farms back to producing subsistence crops.
A real-world example would be what occurred in North Carolina during The Great Depression.

What are your opinions and analysis on the kingdom-building aspect of the series?

Wait how is this unrealistic????? I mean yeah it’s anime but it’s tackling the topics that’s it covering better than any fucking politician could ever. So if people wanna talk about unrealistic take a step outside and see who’s president, see how other countries govern and differ from their own country, and look at a calendar because time periods do exist. if this anime is unrealistic then what do they call the real world? Judging from the fact that this had to be a forum, this anime ain’t for a lot of people also I get the topics it’s covering but why do people want it to be realistic anyways?! Nothing about it exists in real life. anyways…..we live in the 21st century when was this ever gonna be realistic? I think souma is doing a great job in comparison to the orange menace and the guy that slips trying to board a plane. That aside I’ think the kingdom building is going great so far from what I’ve seen, I mean they got rid of a king that didn’t want to make his country prosper through his own reign, the innovation of food and how to prepare it is a step closer to getting rid of the aforementioned famine, and the port to smoothen out the supply and demand is actually genius….well until you realize it’s plauged by a tsunami that can and will hit the new capital so I’m curious to how souma handles that but yeah There’s nothing wrong with the kingdom building it’s solid and realistic.

There's a lot of background stuff that's not fully shown, but mentioned in a sentence or 2 in the anime.

If the actual kingdom building was shown, this would be a 48 episode season.

There is a lot of politics that has barely been mentioned too.

It's not easy to cover all the stuff Souma is going through in only 13 episodes.
I expect this season will end in the middle or end of Light Novel 2.

Abredon pretty much summed it up very nicely.

Details are the most interesting parts of a kingdom building story, but this one completely glosses over it. The MC needs something done and it is done. There is no in between, no struggles, it just is done and never mentioned again.

For a real kingdom building series, I recommend "Release that Witch". The novel is fully translated and spans over a thousand chapters. You can imagine the amount of details that go into actually building a kingdom just from the length.

The biggest problem I have apart from that is that nothing in the world moves.

The world is completely dead. They solely exist for the MC to either shit on them, waifu them, or "englighten" them. A good story should have side characters that feel alive and are interesting by themselves. They will often do things according to their own beliefs and progress the story in a way that feels alive.

If you look at first few seasons of Game of Thrones, you'll know exactly what I mean.

I dropped the LN at volume 8. It just became a chore to read since I have to literally turn my brain off to even get some enjoyment out of it.

That's true. I rather the story takes the perspective of the people doing the heavy lifting time to time to get a better feel of the implementation of Souma's policies.

similar to what a lot other people have said on this thread, the most unrealistic part of the anime is the notion that any ""enlightened"" willy-nilly, equipped with an extravaganza of convenient circumstances, could single-handedly take command of an entire country (and its women) purely because he is more based and more smart than everyone else.

rEaLlIstiCaLlY speaking, the most absurd thing that happened right off the bat was that the mc somehow was not instantly overthrown the moment that it was announced that he would simultaneously

1) as an unknown foreigner from another literal world
2) would suddenly replace the current monarch and become a country's new leader (!!!!!)
3) and would do away with those that might've previously controlled the status-quo (i.e displeased 'corrupt' nobles) (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

of course I could always, to a degree, invoke suspension of disbelief.

world-building completely realistic geopolitics, domestic politics, middle-aged economics, industrialization, militarism, land management, fictional race relations, blah blah blah -- that's all a pretty tall order for any story to tackle satisfyingly, to be fair

but for a story revolving around a 'realist', I would've AT LEAST expected more gritty machiavelli-type politics rather than scene after scene of the mc being 'a good guy' and doing things out of his heart. (I mean, hell, the first episode alludes to machi by name, lol).

i do think it really is just an ordinary isekai

What is good kingdom building then? Instead of web novels, can you recommend some books (any... doesn't have to be Asian) that have good "world/kingdom building?"

Are there that many people "overrating" this series? The light novels are actually written and translated very well. In fact, I have the first seven editions, and I thought the prose is very straightforward and not overly complicated like certain series. (e.g., The Saga of Tanya the Evil)

There are series that have better prose like 86, but for casual reading, Realist Hero hits the right spot.

My main problem isn't even that it's bad. As I already said before, my problem is I felt like I was lied to. Whenever they try to tackle any sort of actual kingdom building concepts such as politics, warfare, economics, I can't help but wonder if the author has an understanding of a 12 year old. The light hearted romance stuff is honestly the only redeeming parts of this series. If they advertised this as just an isekai harem show, then it would actually be pretty decent.

I am not sure what you mean by no Webnovel, only books. If Webnovel is not ok, is light novel out too? What is your criteria? Unfortunately I don't read too much western literature so I wouldn't know. I can only recommend Webnovels and light novels.

I am assuming you have been around these parts for a while and heard a little title called "Tensei Slime". Surely you can see the massive difference in quality between something like "Slime" and the likes of "Realist Hero". Slime doesn't even advertise itself as a kingdom building story, yet it does it naturally and better than "realist hero" that advertises it front and centre in its name.

To clarify, I don't want webnovels because I want stories that have been reviewed by professional proofreaders and editors. These are more for quality control purposes. The story themselves may be good, but I am a stickler for grammar and good sentence structure.

I don't mind light novels. I have heard of "Tensei Slime" before, and I have heard the kingdom building aspect was decent enough, so I will read a couple of volumes down the line.

I like just typing in random tidbits, and Realist Hero was a story where I kept thinking of its political and economical intrigues. I don't necessarily think the author intended the series to be mainly focused on the aspect of kingdom building, as that would make the content too dense to be a light novel. I think of it like "Genius Prince" where the backdrop of the story is the kingdom building aspect, but the main plot is mainly something else.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite and have been thoroughly enjoying the device. I don't mind reading some good series.

To clarify, I don't want webnovels because I want stories that have been reviewed by professional proofreaders and editors. These are more quality control purposes.

Well, my personal favorite is Honzuki. It's not a kingdom building story, but out of everything I've read so far, nothing even comes close to the quality of writing Honzuki has. I read raw, but I know official English translation is catching up.

Slime doesn't even advertise itself as a kingdom building story, yet it does it naturally and better than "realist hero" that advertises it front and centre in its name.

why does slime do it better? i feel like this is way better then slime in kingdom building

this is just lie, it is rated 6.5 in http://www.redditanimelist.net/anime.php?anime=41710 which is even lower then MaL, no one s overrating it, everyone is rating it on however they thought how good the anime was, 6.5 which means (decent) is exactly how it is rated

hehe, you must say generic right? So you feel superior for liking another anime that isn't generic in your mind right?

considering the fact my list clearly shows i enjoy generic isekai more than vast majority of people here this is a piss poor attempt to trigger me

realistic hero is a generic isekai and its not the first or best kingdom building isekai just because you dont go around in subreddits and actually see how a good chunk of people overrate doesnt mean its not overrated there

Slime has beat it in every category (Sales Popularity Writing Characters etc etc) which is funny cause Slime at core is not even a kingdom building isekai

I never said about ratings of reddit users on average
i was referring certain subreddits like r/isekai and their comments overall

So 4 or 5 person in reddit said it is masterpiece, and now you think of these 5 people's opinion as reddit itself? Since you said "folks" which refers to majority of them. Besides, those aren't overrating it, it is just their opinion, even in mal, there are lots of people saying it is masterpiece, but what you should count is the average score for all reddit, it is not overration if only some people not majority like it, there are always some people that will like an anime more then you, Since anime is subjective

An overall average score never stopped any anime being overrataed plenty of shows that is around 6.5 to 7 gets overrated all the time score has noting to do with this

Nah, overration is exactly referring to the average score in specific thing that you are talking about, overrated means an anime that is rated higher then what you think it deserves, if you say overrated in mal, then that means an anime that is rated higher in MAL averagely, if you say in reddit folks, then it is rated higher in reddit averagely. You literally said people in general, then proceed to change your point that you were talking about specific people? Come on, it isn’t hard to accept you were wrong

Yeah because you said "reddit folks" which means reddit people in general, so you are referring to the average score of people's ratings in reddit. Therefore the 6.5 one which i linked it to you, comments or posts that say "wow i like this anime so much" " this anime is masterpiece" isn't reddit folks, it is only some specific people

I think we can just all agree that this shit is bait and if they advertised it correctly, it would be a generic, but not horrible isekai anime.

As it stands however, it's blatantly false title triggers me since I spent at least 50 hours reading up to volume 8 expecting "kingdom building" and got nothing noteworthy out of it.

I am pretty sure the first three volume pretty much set the tone for the rest of the story. I am unsure why you would think volume 8 would be the magic volume.

Volume 8 wasn't the magic volume, it was where I completely gave up.

First 3 volumes might've been the best parts honestly. I was fine with the lack of quality as it was still enjoyable when I turn my brain off. However, when the author pulls shit like this, there is just no hope anymore.
