I just finished the anime, waiting for the second season. May read light novel if it comes too late, but as for now, I have unfinished business with other animes I put on hold. But I wouldn't call it a twist. Anime pretty much hinted it since about half way through. Tbh, at first I thought Ariel was Kumoko, but when she literally met her, it was debunked. White Woman was obviously a Kumoko after Ariel was confirmed not being her. Knowing Kumoko and her goal to save the world, as she had Taboo Lvl 10 at that point, it was obvious she was doing the reverse thing, looking bad, but being good. I wasn't surprised at all that it came to this. I actually like Kumoko being kinda beyond the morality to achieve greater good. I mean, she kills innocent people or even not so innocent and also randomly saves a vampire child, not knowing who she is and all. It's more interesting than having straight up good character that won't hurt anyone. And because of the fact that we know Kumoko kills people if they get on her nerve or when she has mood for that, it wasn't surprising that she was with "evil" force. Not to mention, later on we learned that elves were kidnapping kids to "save" them. And when villain tells that good guy is not so innocent, it's also a hint that there's something going on. Sophia saying that when she fought Oka-chan was already intriguing. Generally anyone who paid attention to details should understand that the roles are reversed or at least that they are not simply evil. Maybe it's just me, but the whole role reversal is not at all surprising, even if all those things and hints were not existent. But there are tons of games and shows where it's like that. I can often see light as as an enemy and dark as a hero. Angels being bad, demons being good. Even if that's just relative speaking.
Sorry for tl;dr stuff, but generally I want to just say that in the anime that plot twist wasn't a plot twist at all. Not sure how it looked in the light novel, but anime was pretty much straightforward with this. It would be hard to not realize that after half of the episodes. Not saying that's a bad thing. It actually made me more curious about HOW it happens. After learning that Kumoko is being "bad guy" I wanted to know how the present plot connects to past plot. I was actually ignoring Shun and his adventures, because I knew they are actually not important. Whatever they do, it doesn't matter, because it's Kumoko who saves the day. I just wanted to know how. Because I knew she will and being a bad guy was just curious.
