Fun fact, I actually dropped X-ros wars too. I gave it like 10~ ish episodes and it feels very filler-ish in the in between episodes. I think each casts no having their partner and letting Taiki be the savior of everything against the spirit of digimon.
For Appmon , just be warn the first 5~6 episodes are kinda the weakest part of the show, ESPECIALLY first 2 episodes, but please give it like 10 episodes or so, you'd notice the characters/ Digimon bonding, as well as plot will start becoming super engaging.
At the end of the show you'd find everything pays up like back when you watch Digimon adventure. They tied up most of the lose end in the end .
Appmon is particularly emphasize on the chemistry between each characters, the bonding of their Digimon partner, as well as individual growth of each characters, making it a very character driven Digimon series. As a result, the combat becomes less of a focus, which is actually why I find the whole series more mature some of the Digimon series. (Especially the reboot which seems to focus too much on fighting evil and fighting enemies. This is what I love about Digimon series back then too.
The characterization of the new reboot is not done right because of rushed pacing and too much padded battle.
They didn't go through real chemistry to form the bond. They just met, and they walk together, that's it.
In the old digimon serie they act like real children, they talk to each other like real friend. They have differences and often argue, yet they embrace each other.
If you are looking for good character development in Digimon serie , I suggest you to finish Digimon Universe App Monster.
However there's a few things you should be aware of before you hop in because you might not get used to it at first.
They use 3D model (and kinda ugly CG too) for the evolution for the sake of better battle animation.
The Adult form of App mon are mostly very disappointing. It is only when they reach Complete form it starts looking good.
Same can be said with the villains. The initial episodes villains are all made very comedic and threatless intentionally.
These not-so-serious moment will be later justified as the plot progresses, but I can tell you the first 7~8 episodes are used as episodes for characterization of each main casts, so it takes a much slower pacing compare to other Digimon series. If you're looking for instant gratification of battle early on, you'd go in disappointed.
However trust me in this, everything will eventually pays up if you sit through the initial part of episodes, as the real plot kicks in. Also the characterization of each characters in App mon is amazing until the very end.
