this might be a weird question but i tried replaying the dialogues and shits but still cant figure out if all the characters in this movie are speaking in kansai dialect, sometimes it feels like they are and sometimes it doesn't, im only certain of josee and her grandmother lol

all i can think is they are in kansai region where josee and her grandmother are originally from so therefore their accent but other characters are migrants like tsuneo thats why they have mixed accent?

edit: i love kansai dialect even more so than their kanto counterpart

I thought that was Kansai dialect. I caught on when at some point Josee said "cha-u" instead of "chigau". Aside from dialect though, I just watched it tonight and now I'm an emotional wreck.

They have some form of Kansai dialect, but it's not strong and prominent. You can hear it the most from Josee and her grandma, but Tsuneo has some too, albeit rare (you can hear it a bit here and there in the beginning when he talks until the drinking scene and when he talks with his mom). It might be because two dialects are mixing together.

While I don't know enough about Japanese to tell the difference they do mention they are in Osaka (or at least near Osaka) in the film so there probably is a hint of Kansai in there.

@hrxshi
So yes Josee and gran speak in Kansai ben, because the original novella is set is Osaka and the writer Tanabe Seiko is from Osaka and she used Osaka ben in her work throughout her career.

And yes Tsuneo is definitely a Kantou boy, Mai and Hayato speak Kansai ben too but their accent isn't as thick as Josee and gran. Other notable Kansai ben user is the owner of the diving shop. Kana the librarian speaks Kantou ben I think, and so do the doctors.

At some point in the movie, she saw Osaka Castle and mentioned it. Ferris wheel I guess?

I've been to that castle, it's neat.
