I absolutely loved the animation style of the show, and the concept of alternate history is something I love as well. I found after a couple of episodes that I didn't care about the character development or where the story was going. If you give this anime a try and you decide that you want to see where it's headed, then absolutely go for it. However, the reason it has the rating that it does is that people decided it wasn't for them. Basically, if you like it, who cares about the rating. |

The anime so far doesn’t have great character or world building which makes it pretty hard to get into at first so a lot of people have rated it badly. I understand where they are coming from but im going to keep watching because i love the art style and really want to see where the story goes. It has great potential but a rough start |

I thought the trailer looked good and I'm enjoying it so far, although the backstory seems unnecessarily complex but that's just my opinion. I'm really liking the artwork in this show and all the unexpected twists in the story. As a general rule I ignore ratings and will give anything a try. If it's not something I enjoy then I drop it. |

I have been watching it and I found the style something unique. It creates a special atmosphere that really goes with being historical. Although I love it I guess it’s not that series that could be highly rated by E1. Give it a shot ^^ |

Artstyle/animation, sound/music and the general concept of the world are quite nice, which is also why many people were intrigued by and had high hopes for the show, I suppose. However, the writing/direction so far has been lackluster to say the least. It is a weird blend of having somewhat generic characters and tropes, but also trying too hard and being all over the place, if that makes sense. There are still 8 episodes to go and there were some unexpected story developments as of last episode, so things might still get more coherent and impactful. To be honest, I do not count on it, though. |

The rating isn't bad, it just shows that it's nothing special, it's full of dialogue but it's neither deep nor clever, the fight scenes are short and the animation is average, also the characters are boring (especially the main character). I know many people hate the word mediocre but it's the most fitting to describe this show. |

Honestly, to me, the anime is lacking in terms of story and directing. I love the music and the animation/art style is pretty unique, and I do really enjoy how the story takes place in a traditional era of Japan, but that’s all there is to it. Here’s why I rated Jouran a 4: -The plot’s pretty cut-and-paste, where the whole first third of the show is basically Sasuke’s backstory re-enacted by a Japanese woman from the 1940’s. It’s extremely unoriginal, but I was hoping they’d make up for the unoriginality by absolutely NAILING the execution... But nope! Generic anime plot is still generic, and so there isn’t much of an incentive to keep watching the show. -The characters themselves barely have any distinct personality to them. Jouran’s characters are actually quite forgettable, lacking in both personality and individuality, and missing the traits that would make them shine. For example, the blonde chick only has two distinct traits: she’s an escort and she’s sassy. That’s literally it. Tell me how and why we’re supposed to like her if that’s all there is to her character. -The action scenes were short and lacking in animation. I’m no shounen junkie, but I do love a good fight scene, so the lack of action was rather disappointing to me. Seeing as it’s an assassin anime, I expected there to be a lot more action involved. Guess not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But basically, it’s boring. The story is rather dry and unoriginal, the characters aren’t very developed (yet), and the action is dryer than a waterless sandy desert. I’m not dropping it because I have a personal rule to not drop anime, but I’m only still watching because I’m forcing myself to. |

I think this is because of how random the plot seems to be. The plot twists and turns do not feel like something logical and coherent, rather the authors just stick their hand in the bag and choose solutions like "Conan reference" or "They is trap!" etc. But for some reason it still seems interesting and funny to me, yes. |

Too convoluted without anything crazy going on to be simple fun, yet it's also lacking substance. Paying attention seemed like an effort that won't be rewarded. Seriously, I was watching the episodes and thinking to myself, why should I care? Pretty much all apsects are mediocre at best, even the visuals are uninspired af. A failure in every way. |

Everybody has already said the main reasons why I dropped this anime after episode 4. Good artstyle/animation/setting but terrible story/characters. Once again, i'm feeling disappointed with myself for believing that an "ORIGINAL" anime could be anything great. The storyline of this is so lowest common denominator that we can smell the stale stench a mile away. Such a pity, this could have been something, well, at least as good as Deca-dence, which wasn't any masterpiece but was good. |

Just watch Dororo, it's a much better revenge anime with a more solid story with even better art/animation. It also has a similar setting, though Joran's time period is more in the future than Dororo's. I was hoping it would be similar to Dororo, and it seems to have taken some inspiration, but so far, this is a 6/10 for me. |

I keep compare Jouran: The Princess of Snow and Blood to Mars Red, because these both are pretty weak in terms of storytelling, but Jouran has shown little more background stuff, compared to Mars Red that shown nothing like that. Sawa's transformation part is one thing that bugs me most, I like that skullface after transformation, that is cool. |

Let me try to explain why this anime is not popular. It lacks a weak, crying protagonist who whines about shit all episode. The MC here is too capable and level headed for the average anime viewer. They want a incapable, whining, crying MC who slowly becomes less pathetic and they call it character growth. When people claim there's no "character growth" they actually mean the characters are already normal functioning human beings who already are capable of fulfilling their roles. The average audience is more into adolescent "normal" people thrown into shitty situations, crying and struggling, then "grow" into a "hero". I have no idea why people love that shit so much. It's played. Jouran is good. Not for the average kiddy on here but its good. It similar to a Japanese or Chinese period drama of which ive seen lots of. Definitely not everyones cup of tea but whatever... nakama power and "i gotta do whats right" seems to be more entertaining to the masses. |

I wouldn't call it bad, it left quite a good impression initially with its art style, setting and serious tone. The more I watch it, however, the more it feels off. I can't really explain it well but it just doesn't feel like the show is well directed, events happen suddenly and often feel out of place, rushed and lacking impact. Maybe that's just my opinion but I think it could have been done better up this point at least. |

The story doesnt make sense, there´s not a single interesting character, the action is just there because it needs to, and there´s a whole lot of kills for no real reason. Like, between episode 3-4-5 it feels there should have been at least 6 more episodes in between. The plot is so convoluted yet rushed at the same time that you feel lost at most scenes. Basically a pretty anime with mediocre plot, like many recently. Turns out this one didn´t hit the rates like JJK and KnY did. |

I feel like the shortcoming is because it has a scriptwriter who only has one other work credited to them and that was the Saint Oniisan adaptations years ago. Original anime IPs have had a terrible hit-or-miss record in recent years. So far this might be a far miss, but Joran has some stellar scenes here and there. It's just the pacing and writing have been awful in holding back what is an otherwise decent show. Hopefully, once the series ends I think people can come back and analyze everything after the fact. |

It is visually and conceptually amazing. Tbh when I first started watching this show I was really loving it. But the more I watched the more the issues that this show has have becoming much more apparent. The story is a bland, generic revenge story that is terribly written. The writing is so bad that sometimes it is hard to follow what the hell is going on (I had to watch some episodes to understand the plot, and even so, there is little that makes actual sense). The characters are one dimensional and bland as well so they don't compensate the awful storytelling. When I watched episode 4 I realized that I didn't care anymore, so I dropped it. This show also takes itself too seriously. No problem with that, I love serious shit, but when the story is awful, a serious tone becomes somtheing laughable. There is a lot of potential within this show, the world is intriguing, the visuals are amazing, the soundtrack is great, the action scenes (although short) are pretty cool and they always end up with a cool japanese poem (forgot what is called since there is a lot of time since I played Ghost of tsushima), but none of that is enough to save this series. There is a new arc going on right now, hopefully it's better in terms of storytelling, but I doubt it. With that beong said, if you don't care much for story and characters and just want to see some style over substance, this show is a good call. |

I watched episode 7 and I thought the same thing. It isn't very good but it's not as bad as other anime with a low 6. It seems closer to a high 6/low 7. If I had to guess why I'd say it's because the art quality is very inconsistent. The characters constantly are off-model, their faces change shape and look like melting snowmen. Even Yukimura's transformation scene looks pretty messy. The only high-quality aspect of the production is the opening sound and visuals. Yes, the revenge story is generic but so are most of these demon/vampire hunting anime. Another issue is that the characters don't have much development, or it is very slow, Yukimura is basically pushed by the plot (or Asahi) to change. Asahi has grown the most, yet still not much. Caring about the characters like Jin, Tsuki, and Elena requires attention to detail and putting together their motivations with context clues and assumptions based on subtle exposition; that's more effort than most people would want to put in a show that hasn't hooked them with good art, likable characters, or an interesting plot. spaceinvaderlum said: This gave me a good laugh.people calling a loose homage to lady snowblood "a generic revenge story" while also having demon slayer in their favorites list is top comedy |

It’s probably not inherently bad, but it’s such an underwhelming and meh presentation. The animation can look good at times but also really ugly at times, more so the latter, sadly. The story itself is quite generic and the characters are essentially walking caricatures with nearly zero development. Even if there are context clues and subtleties here and there, they’re so vague and have so little weight in value in the end due to the mediocre directing. |

You know, it's because this anime is not didactic. It does not have the characters narrating each of his own actions in a redundant way. The average anime-viewer of nowadays doesn't have enough cognitive ability to watch something that lacks it, even though everything is stupidly clear on the screen. In addition, there is the fact that if something is not overhyped, it is necessarily going to be unwatchable. |

Well, this series just goes to prove (as if that was necessary...) that I seem to live in a parallel universe to the rest of the anime fandom. I found it sublime from the first episode to the last post-credit scene in the last one. Not only truly beautiful to look at (and listen to) but also with a strong, compelling story and characters that I won't be forgetting any time soon. A true masterpiece and one of the best 1-cour series I've ever watched. Easy 10/10 for me |

Gave it a 4, i was going to give it a 6 but the ending was a summary of everything that was wrong with the anime; bad storytelling bad pacing, illogical decisions, plot twists that don't make sense (SPOILER: Tsukishiro wanted Yukimura to be free but then out of nowhere changes her mind, people get killed over info that was supposed to shake the government except the secret is never very clearly stated and has 0 repercussions, people die except not really except this time yes except not really, miraculously surviving because its convenient for the plot, wolverine drunk lady who supposedly doesn't have any ideals and just does it because its all she knows how to do who is left for dead suddenly and miraculously bounces back and has enough motivation to kill the protagonist? and I could go on..) The art design is good, animation is decent but that's all I can give them credit for. |

Because people like different things. I've not enjoyed some highly-rated animes, yet enjoyed some lower-rated ones, it's all subjective. In terms of this show, it was confusing and well, bland. Some of the decisions made were ridiculous, and it felt really rushed, plus that ending made no sense, personally. As many, the art was beautiful, really, but they just didn't deliver the story as well as they could've. |

IMO it has good animation and music, and the best part in terms of writing is the middle. The beginning is a bit messy and the last 2 episodes come across like a scramble to tie everything up neatly. That's also the point where they pile up a lot of clichés, and they pull a GoT-like "SuBvErT eXpEcTaTiOnS" move near the end. This show is afraid to take risks. Anytime it makes a step towards a more serious tone, it takes it back. I would give it a generous 7/10. It's not great but it's far from the worst thing ever. I'm more frustrated by the wasted potential. Like Jon Snow, Sawa doesn't even get to kill the one that's the destination of her journey. Her moment of revenge — what the entire show and her character's core motivation has been about — is taken away from her by a side character literally at the last moment. You could argue that she's changed and wants to live with Asahi, but the point remains that she wanted to kill Tokugawa in order to stop her blood from being used as a weapon, and to avenge the murder of her family. |
