Not a spoiler, just my guesses based on what I’ve learned from the anime story so far.

Tbh I was hoping that the Spearhead remains would survive until the very last frame.

He had a gun. He was gonna reach for it in the scene, but he was knocked out (he was hit and the cockpit disengaged from the rest of the rig) and injured so he could barely move and was semi-conscious.

What a conclusion to the first cour, wow, just wow.. They really kept going until there was nothing left.

I didn't expect her to actually visit their baracks. That was sad but quite satisfyingly to watch. The kitty! :3

Could anyone who has read the LN, please confirm if this episode was also 100% anime original?

If so then I'm seriously impressed by how this was directed.

Almost lost my shit at the half time mark because it froze at a very ending place to leave it.
I really enjoyed this anime. It wasn't a block buster for originality, but my god... everything about the delivery (even the parts I didn't really enjoy) were really spot on. Characters all grew on me too. It's rare for me to immediately go hunting for the novel, and truthfully 86 is really hard to find consecutively but did get my hands on a few. So far from what I can tell, the adaption is spot on in pacing and content.

Shin seems to be the undertaker once again, carrying the names of the others who have suicide missioned for him please anime gods save some of them other wise it'll be a long long sad road ahead
8/10 but easily my favorite animes.

P.P.S. The illustration for Nouzen on V2 cover I swear looks like a serious Guren Ichinose from Owari No Seraph.

Damn why very good series have to end quickly? My guess is that this is not the end of the undertaker story. Must finally start reading LN, because I am not going to wait god knows how long for second season.

This direct reference to World War I at the very end, hit hard.

Thanks! I’ll need to rewatch. I guess I was overwhelmed and just missed some details.

… so then this makes it not a plot-stupid but really tragic development

They're not issued guns. Those are scavenged from ruins. In fact they're not supposed to have them at all but their Alba handlers have a DGAF attitude to the whole war and don't care as long as the 86 are doing their "job" (dying to the Legion).

Granted it's not as explicitly spelled out in the anime but the LN makes it pretty clear that the guns are contraband.

THIS
would be
just inexplicably awesome!!!
And also the Legion turning out to not just be ghosts (niisan was kinda hmmm somewhat intelligent?), but actually beings developing their own consciousness based on the brain substrat they received of course but not limited to just brainless repetition… so maybe we would just have dilemma like is it okay to fight them or something. Wahaha that would be super interesting

Thank you A-1 for a near perfect adaptation of one of my favorite LNs. That ending was masterful and great foreshadowing for part 2. Which will probably be AOTS this fall season just like this was AOTS for the spring season.

What an amazing season! 86 became an instant favorite for me and the second season for this anime is probably what I’m now looking forward the most in terms of anime (probably this and Chainsaw Man). Can’t believe this is over and what a cliffhanger to end the season.

Please don't tell me Shin becomes part of the Legion? I can only interpret the post credit scene as that..

The old man story pained me, almost everything about this episode was painful. It's one of the things I like about this show, it all looks so beautiful yet gut-wrenching.

I think the last two episodes did a great job setting up for the next season which I'm really looking forward to.

The soundtrack will be out in about 3 weeks, and that's another thing I'm excited for. Sawano never fails to impress me with his songs.

86 is one of the anime of this season for me, and I'm glad I took my friend's advice and tuned in!

Beautiful episode. We got to see them have fun in the abandoned school, and curious Kurena was so cute. The scene where Lena found everyone’s notes and their group picture, that they left for her, made me cry… Also, smol Shin is adorable.

A bit unrelated but I really love the CGI in 86. It’s really fluid with appropriate fps and it just looks great imo, Shin’s fight in this episode reminded me of that.
The whole show has a real cinematic feel to it.

Looking forward to see the direction this show is gonna take in the future.

The last two episodes might make me up my final score one notch. I really enjoyed the technical aspects of the series. The artwork, music, and animation was well done and made the series watchable. Most of the episodes with Lena in them were on the other end of the spectrum. Shin was a touch above average on the MC scale of things without ever whining or becoming cringe worthy. Lena was a very unlikeable character to me. The last two episodes, she became tolerable but too little too late. I would not watch a second season but I would recommend the anime to a friend .... but not enthusiastically. 7/10 due to the last two episodes.

Loved it so far : animation, music, characters and universe itself. Plot was not the strongest point, that makes no doubt, but it at least caught my curiosity and still opens up some doors for more.

Last episode seems to have brought an end to the current squad of 86, and it appears very unlikely that any of them actually survived. Actually, I would prefer this ending, instead of a huge turnover in which they got rescued or miraculously survived. Fortunately, the after-credits scene kinda left no doubt.

From my perspective, the second-cour/season will feature another squad of 86, with Lena as their Handler, again. She looked determined to move forward and there's more content available anyway. However, the covers of each LN shows Shin under his human form so... that is up for speculation.

I think overall a pretty solid ending but one that leaves a little room for a season 2. I also think that the final scene involving shin and his brother implies that he doesn't become a member of the legion which is heartening to see.

Looking back this cour feels like long prologue, a preview of their world but mostly focus instances of the Squad and Lena, and the last 2 episode has set up the motion.

Hope the next cour will have a more forward story to tell, not too focusing on the repeated moments from this cour, because no doubt Lena will encounter the former 86 Squad in the future with alot complications.

yeah my score of this series is nowhere near as critical as yours (i gave it a 6) but this is pretty much my sentiments... the whole thing felt like an 11 episode-long set up for the "good stuff" to come so even though s1 left me underwhelmed i'm actually looking forward to s2. i feel like 86 DOES have promise and s1 lacking in many aspects started to make sense to me when i found out the original LN was initially meant to be a one-shot

I was quite underwhelmed because the execution could really be better. I thought that the first episodes were meant as a setup for the last episodes since I didn't or couldn't care about underdeveloped or irrelevant characters dying all the time ala AoT, and when I got hit by the 8th episode I was kinda hopeful about the rest of the series since the distressed Lena and shit hitting the fan for the 86 was an interesting premise. Then we got the 9th and 10th and it was a bummer since they were lame as fuck.
Maybe the dynamic that was presented couldnt hold for itself in a short series since it needed a better development of characters and the new dynamic is going to be better in terms of generating meaningful situations and narratives. But this just feel like misery and melodrama simulator with lame action scenes and a cool guy, and a political background that is residentsleeper as fuck

Slightly saddened that the commander didn't save her troops. I thought she would come in at the last second and save them. Now it just looks like she will continue to play her role behind a screen? Im a little unsure as maybe the translation was off. She said something like I'll continue to fight until my time comes. But... she isn't and hasn't done any fighting? Don't get me wrong, I liked this show. I just want to know what happens in the next season with the princess??!?

Well there is no scientific way of scoring an anime so if I give it a 2/10 and you give it a 10/10 it is all problem of our subjectivity. This is far from a masterpiece in my eyes, way too far as an individual piece. At most is kinda above average if you can bypass some weakness about construction and just caring about plot forwarding

Eh. Not remarkable. Not garbage. Just another shallow teen/young adult dystopian story. Mostly surface level understanding and utilization of social, political, and economic ideas, themes of media manipulation and propaganda, conformity pressure, haphazard caricature levels of class divisions in the population between the privileged and the unprivileged, all of which are then relegated to backdrops in favor of a burgeoning romance; all under the specter of an evil incompetent dystopian government that wouldn’t fly in the real world.

I rate 6/10.

Lmao. Ye, this is how 86 should be watched. Alone and solo so it cannot be compared side by side with its peers.

As if there is anything much better or "deeper" this season, that would have effected his opinion. Asides from the fact its basically shoujo mecha later. Amazing one at that tbh, but not some pseudo intellectual mastubation "high" literature some people here apparently look for in weeb media of all fucking things.

i guess MAL is good for a laugh thanks to you guys that watch through poorly done subs but come out with these self wank "critical" reviews about cartoons for teens-young adults..

Based take ngl. Of course there are masterpieces in anime just like any other medium, but for every masterpiece is like a hundred isekai power fantasies. But here’s the thing: THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. If a show is enjoyable, it doesn’t have to be deep. In fact, some masterpieces with deep themes are less enjoyable then the less deep anime (Punpun and Evangelion come to mind for me) because of the dark themes they tackle. This show is far from basic and the fact it covers some political and societal themes properly and is (personally) enjoyable sets it apart from not just a lot of anime, but TV in general.

the last 3 episodes redeemed this show for me. It got off to a really average start but slowly warmed up throughout the season.

Based on the narrative structure of the first season, I sincerely doubt Shin is going to die or become a Legion just yet. The only question on my mind is what random asspull BS is gonna save him.

As for the music, it was good but too many song covers IMO. I usually hate them because the lyrics distract from the scene and tend to distract from the tone, however since I can barely understand Japanese it was fine.

definitely not the best show this season, but it's up there (simply because so much shit has come out lately there really wasn't anything to compare it to).

Well, pretty okay final, i'd say. Not what i expect it to be like these. Still, rip Fido. You don't deserved to be death, man. Kurena deserved the most, wtf? Why you called Shin like that? Rip Fido. The most undeserve death on these first cour, if i can be honest here. Well, idk if those bot consciousness can be transferred through another bot. But, for now, its pretty okayish final. Really looking forward to the special edition, if i am not taking a mistake on their last message there.

A bit repetitive with the same happy-go-around and then tragic-intense same plot every critical point of episodes. If they can using a refreshing approach, it will make me feels better. The usage of ost was very good, its really bring such a well-placed mood. Lena absolutely hot af female soldier. I like her a lot. But, her personality still annoying me several times. So ... I don't even want to talk much about those ending. Cause, thanks to the spoiler, i know whats goin on behind those little scene. A bit of misleading. But, its the purpose of these final episode, right? I might feel like the next cour will contain another Legion boss fight too, like Shin did against his brother. But, for these one cour, 8 is enough for me. Not a perfect. But this definitely an enjoyable ride.

By the middle of the eighth mug, you'll probably know what I mean.

This anime has great graphics, music and everything else that isn't about the plot. But as soon as you start thinking about the plot, all that beautiful visuals fall apart.

The last episode should have brought a tear to my eye, but all it did was make me laugh. A silly reference to World War I in the form of a book that shouldn't be in this world. The frontier of the empire is three days' leisurely drive away. The inadequate behavior of the Legion, which can't destroy the squad of five-man infiltrators it has already discovered. Bringing super long-range artillery into close proximity.

If you think about it seriously, don't you think people could have lost to this Skynet on Chinese firmware only if they had fought him with water balloons and water cannons.

And my favorite. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albians. Those robots that were let in for one episode don't count, as this was obviously done to make the death of the rest of the squad look less weird and silly.

5/10 Out of sheer respect for the opening and animation of the juggernauts.

The biggest flaw of the show is the actual situation itself
from what I know from LN readers, the 86 were all conscripted by the government 8/9 years ago to fight against the Legion. The Alba then completely demobilised the lower rungs of their military and forced the 86 to fight for them. And then decided that by the end of the war, all the 86 had to die so no one could figure out how they were treated.

So if all the 86 are going to die, then postwar their entire military is also effectively dead. That's stupid

Why did they decide to exterminate the 86 at the same time they conscripted them? Why would you immediately assume that anyone going to find out what you've done? No one knew about the extermination of the Jews (they knew they were disappearing but that's it) until the war ended and the Americans investigated. No one knew about the Red Purge until many years after Stalin's death. Basically everyone involved got away with it. They don't need to exterminate them to cover their tracks, and therefore the entire situation in the show makes no sense.

Now you can argue it's a racist cultural reason, but we don't know anything about their culture so that's essentially a meaningless grey area.

these aren't questions that should be withheld. These are questions the audience needs to know from the get go for the entire story to make sense. And since they're not the entire show doesn't make sense.

This was heartbreaking. Almost brought tears to my eyes.

This was really a great watch. It has some flaws, like the reliance on exposition to deliver information about the world and the fights not lasting long even though their CGI was great, but the premise, the characters, the setting and the overall plot were really engaging, and the epic moments were great.

Solid 8/10.

If you think about it seriously, don't you think people could have lost to this Skynet on Chinese firmware only if they had fought him with water balloons and water cannons.

And my favorite. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albas. The rifles and pistols they were given, even though the only targets they can use them against are the Albians. Those robots that were let in for one episode don't count, as this was obviously done to make the death of the rest of the squad look less weird and silly.

5/10 Out of sheer respect for the opening and animation of the juggernauts.

ah,you are that pudding guy ,right? nice to meet you again after weeks.glad that you sticked around till last episode.
