THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
We got a more lighthearted and humorous for the first half this time with everyone gathering under the blossom trees. It's episodes like this where they remind themselves they are also humans, not just soldiers in a squad. The only person that seemed to have a depressing mood is Shin himself.

Shin still carries a lot on responsibilities on his shoulders. As usual, Lena doesn't hold her personality or words back even when talking to her superiors.

I’ll never slander A-1 again, I promise. Kuniyasu snapped on this episode. The use of camera angles and direction in some scenes, particularly Lena and Jerome’s conversation was amazing. The background visuals during Shin’s opening sequence with Rei’s death were also stunning. Production quality all around were turned up several levels today. This is probably my new fave episode. Pacing/adaptation as usual was great, and A-1 did a good job of driving home the terror of the battlefield. Daiya, Lecca and several others gone like that. The cruel reality of the 86.

Looking forward to Ito’s ep next week

Today, we lose a soldier and fellow Anju simp. RIP Daiya. Rekka too.
The self-propelled mines looked lowkey freakish. We see shin being called out by his brother again. Intense episode.

Really liked how they handled the opening scene. It really captured the atmosphere described in the book perfectly. Also little Shin’s adorable, lol.

That anime-original flashback with the cherry blossom trees was pretty nice! I remember seeing this in the PVs and was wondering where they’ll fit this scene in. It was a pretty nice breather moment in an overall solemn episode.

I’m glad that the anime showed the battle where Daiya died, because that happened “off-screen” in the LNs. Getting to see how he died adds more to the upcoming moments. In the novels, this battle was skipped over and we simply jump to the aftermath of it all.

And the second-half of the episode (with Lena’s side) was also anime-original. That conversation about Rei at the end of the episode was pretty nice though. And lol, this adaptation sure loves to tease that romance between both of them.

Yeah… this episode adapted almost nothing from the LN, lol. It was almost all anime-original stuff, though it really added quite a lot to the story. Seeing the battle where Daiya died adds more to the story, and the conversation at the end of the episode adds more to Shin and Lena’s dynamic, especially how they’re both connected through Shin’s brother.

The very beginning of the episode with Shin’s flashback was the only stuff that was actually in the source material (it was from an interlude chapter that was a couple of pages long). That flashback with that angry Rei was also from another interlude, but I think that was less of an adaptation of said interlude, and more of a tease of what’s to come. Like seriously, I think this episode only covered a handful of pages XD

Really excited for the next episode! Considering the name of the next episode, it’ll adapt my favorite moment from the first volume. Kinda thought that it would be covered in this episode, but oh well lol

Everyone was having the time of their life in this episode. They were all smiling and having fun with each other. The setting was really beautiful under the Cherry Blossom Trees. Obviously, they were reminiscing their fun times.

The battle once again was really ferocious. Losing some of your partners in the battle is one of the most painful experiences someone could ever experience. We lost Burnt Tail Rekka and Black Dog Daiya. I felt so and for Black Dog, he didn't even get to tell his feelings to Anju.

Shin still thinks that it's all his fault. Cuz we saw his brother blaming him for everything. He has so much to look forward to and handle on his own. Poor Guy.

I very much enjoy how this story balances both the heart pounding grizzled sci-fi action scenes on the battlefield with the casual heartfelt conversations between characters. It does work really effectively to make us endear to this group of kids facing this in crown or threat. The Spearhead Squadron kicks major ass but they're also really likeable. Doing a great job to get me to enjoy them just kinda hanging out like that flashback scene under the cherry blossoms. Cut to the battle this episode where we lose two members horrifically. Daiya ma boi going out like a champ, that broke my heart tbh. Like I said about having those endearing scenes beforehand, made his death hit a lot harder. All the deaths in this show really feel like daggers, they all hurt. Shin being haunted by his brother kinda literally since the Legion took his head makes things even creepier. Lena continuing to fight for more military support of the 86 but still jot going too well. At least she can still talk to Shin and blush cutely.

Fantastic episode as always.

The scene under the sakura trees was so bittersweet, everyone having fun despite knowing that their next battle could be their last.

They are doing a great job at showcasing the cruel reality of the eighty six. How they can fall in battle just like that and the Republic can carry on without even batting an eye. The immense amount of mental strength Shin must need to kill his comrades by his own hands to avoid them falling into the hands of the Legion. It's all so tragic. :(

Lena is definitely the glimmer of hope amidst the Republic, the only capable of showing empathy towards the unfortunate reality of the eighty six. She tries her best to make things better but the Empire's hierarchy is far too rigidly dependent on viewing the eighty six as inhuman. Even if she were to break it somehow, I think it would crumble the order of the empire and it times of war that may not be a good idea.

Lena and Shin's conversation at the end about Shin's brother was great and god Lena is far too adorable. That blush and embarrassment after realizing what she said following by seeing the heart on the chocolate was too cute. <3

Pretty chill flashback during the first part of the episode, sad that we never got to see most of these people in the actual series.

Wow, those death scenes were masterfully done, props to A1. The audio cuts, facial expressions, and overall tone are so amazing. Shin's backstory is pretty intense, what happened between him and his brother that put them in that situation to begin with?

Lena so cute!!!!!

Maaaaaan I wanna cry so bad, wasn't expecting Daiya to die :)

The backstory laid the groundworks and then boom he dead, sigh. Thou it was really amusing to see everyone's expectation of Mirizé. Seems like Daiya's idea of Mirizé was the one closest or I dare say it's 100% correct.

Also yeah I've been wondering why they havn't been getting reinforcements? Is this some plan to end the spearhead squad from the higher ups?

Mirizé and Shin's conversation at the end was sweet. Her blushing and getting embarrassed was cute. Hinting their ship I suppose.

He was killed off screen. Like at the start of one the chapters it was stated that he died in one the last mission. So it was absulutely amazing to see it animated. Has more impact.

The death flags laid out beforehand and in this episode were pretty obvious, but the episode itself was pretty great as usual, sucks seeing Daiya go out like that along with Lecca too. The pacing, content for this episode was stellar throughout, and I even liked seeing Lena's blush and shyness at the end when communicating with Shin about her experiences with her brother in the past. Having little drawings of everyone's faces on the board shows how much she cares about them despite them being 86 and just tools for the Republic's survival outside. Sucks that the mission and future for the 86 won't be as pretty as some of the flashbacks in the episode where they all met up and were having real fun with each other, even in a shitty situation.

Great directing too as a whole, and well-animated. A-1 so far have really done well with the material of this first volume as a whole, one of the best adaptations I've seen from an oversaturated studio like theirs in a while.

Shinn sure was pretty young when he joined the spearhead. For him to find the remains of his dear bro and his comrades long after their death must have been devastating. It was insightful to see how they were when they first joined the squadron. The moment of peace as we get to see all of their faces was a nice respite. Anju and Daiya though were so cute together. Its nice to see Kaie again and see how she was before her untimely demise. Lecca and Daiya's death really hit hard though given their recent successes against the legion. Hearing the party line after Lena witnessed Lecca and Daiya's death in battle really served to make me sick though. Overall an excellent ep whose use of alternating scenes that show the past for Shinn and the squadron with the present sure was a fun way to expand upon the world while also showing just how many friends they lost since then. The bond between Shinn and his brother though sure looks rather complicated. The relationship between Lena and Shinn though really has come a long way. Prospects of romance look pretty high. Lena's embarrassed reaction was pretty cute. RIP Lecca and Daiya.

That scene with Rei was amazingly poweful.
When Shin eventually finds his brother's Legion if the only thing he hears from him is constant derision those are gonna be some great scenes.

Episode was nice. I'm said Daiya never scored and that Lecca had to go so soon, since I really liked her design. I wonder of the latter turning off her Para-RAID before shooting herself was so Lena coulnd't hear it. Would be a nice touch. Those things that killed Daiya are off-putting as all hell btw. Looked like they were smiling as they were about to suicide, probably fav robot type from the enemy side so far.

Anette keeps saying the darkest things without a care in the world and Shin keep being a great guy in actually choosing to sync with Lena for the first time. No wonder girl got shook.

That said I have no idea why Lena hasn't revealed what Shin told her last episode to uncle dearest. You'd think that information would be the most crucial thing here.

Thought that had more to do with Para-RAID connection and not Shin's specific circumstances of being able to hear a large undead army out there. And Annette basically said they are planning on doing that to him anyway

The squadron under the sakura tree at the beginning of the episode was really wholesome to see. It's nice to see them joking around and not having to face life or death situations. Way to ruin the mood! The scene right after was like a hit to the chest. Daiya's death was painful. Haha, that flustered reaction at the end was really cute from Lena.

The flashbacks of the past for the Undertaker Shin...one filled with sorrow from his brother's loss in the same exact way: being an 86er, KIA in the Juggernaut.

The cherry blossom levels of peace and symbolisms for the entire 86ers Spearhead group before all went down to shit, that is a good setup for all fun and playful moments before the reality setting in. Daiya and Anju certainly looked better together, and those dead in the current timeline (e.g. Kaie) would not have been in vain if not for the war against the unmanned Legion in just a short span of time.

The Legion's weaponry is stronger by the episodes, and so does the death flags, which "Black Dog" Daiya and "Burnt Tail" Lecca prudently sacrificed themselves so that the others stay alive. Still devastating to see the post-effects of last episode's tremor with Lena not cutting the Para-RAID away, probably good direction that they chose to silence it and shaking the raw emotions, while Shin wrestles with his sin.

Lena hearing first-hand from Annette how they deal with deceased Processors is pretty typical of an altruistic Republic who doesn't care for the 86ers, but going ahead to report to Nouzen only vaporizes the chance of their survival and giving the Republic the sense of security through their own means of governance nihilism. But hearing the relationship between Lena and the 86ers improve also makes for a compelling argument that she has a role to fulfill, not just with the 86ers, but with changing what she can in the now.

The romance aspect between Lena and Shin is growing all the more, but war comes first to dethrone. Another excellent episode, of which this has maintained the composure.

Maybe I should drop this one.

I don't feel compelled by the MCs. The plot armor from the characters isn't exciting to happen.

The last few episode raises concerns of how smart a person who raised to the rank of Major need to be. Milize got to the rank of Major and still didn't get that 86 dying fight for the Republic is a win-win situation.

Shin just be there with his edgy mysterious past.

The science division is inefficient, to be like "Hey something seriously wrong with that division. Should do something? Nah.". But now the MC is there. "The we need to extract brains"

Another thing would be good, if the mechas had a self-destruct installed.

00:00 “His small twelve-year-old body was somehow tolerating the night’s chill.”

“Shin approached the machine, his legs sinking into the snow, and looked into the exposed cockpit.”
“…Brother.”

03:28 A subtle addition, though, I find it cute that when Anju responded to Daiya, she steered her Juggernaut towards his. Getting it through that the Juggernauts at piloted with humans inside, not drones.

05:23 A group shot as Spearhead look at Theo's sketch of the rumoured female handler (Lena). With a flashback, we see more of Kujo Nico/Sirius. His line is really sad considering the events of episode 1.

06:39 The same goes for this moment Kaie has with Shin, talking about cherry blossoms.

09:47 A-1 are doing a great job expanding the lore with this sorrowful anime-original battle scene, depicting the demise of Daiya and Lecca. Daiya's VA, Haruki Ishiya, is top-tier.

12:24 The painful task of Shin not letting his comrade Daiya, become part of the Legion. The expression Shin has at 13:06, suspecting Shepherd Rei's voice...

13:17 Anju hiding her pain. The empty bed. Shin's carvings. RIP Daiya and Lecca.

14:26 Rei looks absolutely terrifying in Shin's mind. I hope we get the full scene from the headless knight interludes.

14:59 The obligatory food scene with Annette. To anime watchers wondering why Major Milizé won't inform the rest of the Republic's military about what she learnt from Shin last episode; she fears it would lead to Shin being experimented upon for his abilities.

19:34 Just like Undertaker's box of carvings; the 86, who don't get graves also now have Lena to remember them, in addition to Shin the Undertaker.

21:45 Shin x Lena moment! "Of course, this time I spend talking to you is very important as well!" When Lena realizes the implications...then she hears his voice and looks at the heart on the chocolate.

It’s just non-stop banger after banger for this show.

Expected someone to die after the backstory but certainly not Daiya. Anju feeling it really hurt, as well. Costliest battle with two casualties from 86 so far, and things are certainly heating up on the “Reaper’s” delusion (?) end too. Looking forward to answers on the latter!

Henrietta-san is definitely noticing something. Cake next year too, that’s nice. Hopefully, not another flag though.

And finally, Milize’s sweet little moment towards the end there. Can’t say I hate it, lol.

The art style is pretty close to the light novel's, the manga's art style is much darker though.

Seems like we will reach the conclusion of volume 1 soon, not sure if they will cover parts of volume 2 within the first cour, all in all, the pacing is pretty good.

Two nameless (imo) 86s were killed this episode. Tragic, or it would be if I could atleast remember their names or any aspect of their character or characterization which I don't.

Still continued mixed feelings on this I love the parts where it shows the political intrigue of the Republic side of the war, but the 86 side needs to give me more so I actually care about the characters getting killed before they get killed.

Right now Lena and Shin are the only two characters I care about to some extent, and even then I can't say I find either of the two particularly noteworthy or likeable.

You... definitely won't get what you're expecting with most of the characters, but what's more evident is the then and now with the characters who have passed starting with the first episode. There is detail there even if you can't get attached to characters.

The solid directing continues to impress me more and more with each episode. As predictable as the death flags were, the show was somehow able to get me attached to a rowdy bunch of kids whom I don't even know or remember half the names of. They handled Daiya's death very well, as I remembered it being glossed over in the LN.

It's funny how Shin and Lena have completely differing images of Rei, and how the latter's existence and involvement has made the aforementioned two's relationship all the more befitting. Cute and lovely moment when Lena blushed and got flustered talking with Shin.

Just drop it seriously

At this point I feel that A-1 can't do anything wrong with this adaptation. Another perfect episode of solid directing, excellent use of camera angles and transitions, perfect blend of original content with the source; and highly atmosferic OST.

It was nice to see how they handled Daiya’s death (nicely blend with the cherry blossom flashback), plus we got the first taste of how the self-propelled mines look both creepy and terrifying on the battlefield.

The conversation between Lena and Jerome was also on point and so were those nice details with the drawn caricature of the 86 by Lena on those stick notes. Love the symbolism, she even had a box for those who died next to her flowers on the window.

Looking forward to see the revolution festival conversation adapted in the next episode.

I don't even remember how Daiya died in the LN and I honestly didn't even expect the humanoid type legion to be introduced this early.

That's because his death was barely even mentioned in the LN. It was literally just mentioned after a skip in time that he'd died recently, we never saw anything involved with it.

The fact that they took the time to show his death makes me really happy this anime exists, it was one of my big irks with the first Volume that we never saw his death.
