Wasn't it because he lived on drugs or whatever that thing he was taking?
It was at least 5 years living on them only so it's normal to lose all his fortune

It all came due to Nanbu accident, operations and maintenance had expenses, and why people hate him is because Joe wanted to fight Yuri's apprentice.Since he needed more money for Nanbu to live, on the day of Nanbu's death, Joe was unable to attend as he was training for said match. That made people angry and consequently he ran.Due to the lack of money he returned to clandestine fights and drugs, I suppose they were to remedy some kind of problem or trauma.

The perfect explanation, close thread. And how is this gonna end then? Also I understand the first month of runtime was spent on explaining Joe's drug addiction, the consequences, and Chief influencing him to quit. Do you think that season 2 could've started from episode 5 with the drug addiction explanation slipped in or nah? Because the first 4 episodes to me were nice but felt like border line padding before we returned to the primary cast. I mean, Joe didn't want to accept that Nanbu was going to die and wanted to exhaust all of his options before really having to accept that. Very in-character for Joe TBH. I feel like it comes down to how he wins back the family he abandoned but idek if that's possible at this point. And back to reality but I think I might drop NBX2 (weekly wise) and just wait till its done. Ive always questioned whether this season 2 was even necessary, given that i would've preferred seeing a spin off on (kid) Joe's origin story and how he got to the way he was in S1 over this season 2 atm.

Between the flashbacks from three years ago and the current time? Drug abuse.

I do not consider the first chapters to be filler, but rather an arc to explain how he overcame these traumas I also have a theory that maybe in the future Joe will use Chief's gear for something. And it's not just going to be about how he gets his family back, but surely Sachio will fight Liu, Yuri's apprentice.

Honestly, I kind of have problems with this time skip. So Joe disappeared 2 years after the final of S1 and then he was absent for 3 years? I don't quite remember, so I may be wrong, but I think in previous episodes somebody said that Joe was absent for 5 years. So does it mean "absent from ring for 5 years"?

I like how they started this season uncovering the unfortunate state of Joe's life layer by layer. I loved the amount of fighting last season but I love a well developed plot just as much. The cause of Joe's fleeting fortune is his stray dog life he's had in the past that avoided relationships and love. So the first time he is going to lose a loved one he runs away to the ring and ironically lose two things. His family (including Nanbu) and his boxing career due to the trauma that forms. The only concern I have is the hints given that Joe will retire from boxing and permanently becomes a trainer/corner man. He trained Chief and obviously he will train Sachio. Mentally, he has trauma in the pro ring and physically, he's been on drugs for five years. Joe mentoring this whole season would be problem for me.

After the final match of S1 Joe hanged around with pops and the kids for two years (the final scene from S1 is one year after the final match and the flashbacks from the last episode are from one year after that) and then disappeared for three years after pops died.
