Since there is a chapter in the book only about flower photograpy here it goes.
The book is sometimes too wimpy but that makes it funny.

Nature and wild live.

The desing of a SLR and the necesity of taking fotos of flowers are closed related. There is no other field in photography where focusing through the lens shows is so convenient.
"Nowadays" (1971 edition) flower photography goes from entire flower fields photos to microscopic sections photography, but here we are going to talk of two more usual: Horticulture focused and artistic flower photography.

That't the introduccion next will be about equipment.

Flower photography equipment.

The Pentax ( the book's title is the Asahi Pentx way) is a particularly appropriated for flower photogragy. In it's basic configuration with a normal lens (they mean by normal lens 55 or 50mm focus length lens) can focus to even less than 60cm being able to take many photos just with that. Sometimes you can't be close enough with a normal lens, that time you can put an close_up lens on your lens, but close up lens shortens your focus length so you need to take the picture closer. If we get closer the apparent perspective distortion (the closer objects will appear much bigger than the others) will increase as well, thats why closeup lens are not the best option (I'm almost positive that are not even selled anymore)

May be the most handful tool will be the extension tubes that makes the focused image bigger than the actual size. When taking photos outdoor you can store your tubes in your pocket and mount it when ready to take photos. The bellows allows you focusing untill 2.45X but isn't very comfortable outdoor.

Both the tubes and the bellows allows you to maintain certain distance from the theme avoiding the apparent perspective distortion.
To obtain the best result the 105mm Super Takumar lens will give you a good perspetive close to idean and a nice shooting distance.
[The Horticulture photography...many flower photography that satisfy the expert, wont give you the feeling of a good photography.

Next will be "choosing the flowers"

Choosing the flowers

In order to take the best flower photography from a tecnical point of view, not artistic, it's necesary to choose the flowers very carefully.

What kind of flowers you want to take pictures of? Probably the most usual kind are those that can be planted and grow in a garden. Then that photos became a document of each flower or the way to take care of them. Ofcouse you can take photos of a entire garden, so the gardeners can take a look during the winter when the gardens lack of flowers.

If you preffer take photos of wild flowers you need to walk through the fields and the forest. A collection of wild flowers photos taken during a year gives you colours, beautines and variety.

Looks like wild flowers gives you the best chance to take artistic photos, if you want to take photos of wild flowers but you don't know much about them, you will need a book about your zone's flowers.

It's almost imposible give you clues of where to find flowers there are so many kinds and can be found in so many diferent places like fields, river banks, forest, swamps... some are big and easy to find but some others are extremly small and very difficult to find, bear in mind that most of the plants has flowers, even the grass, so check the fields often to find new ones.

Flowers must be perfect fisicaly and the photo must have also a leave. If posible a cocoon, if you need a very neat photo you have to use extremly small apertures and a slow shutter speed. A table tripod is very recomendable.

When using shutter slow shutter speeds even the slightest breze can ruin your photo, to avoid this use something to protect the flower from the wind. Using small apertures the background is very important, if you take the photo as you find it may be your background will be a green mess of leaves and grass, you can use a blue of brown piece of paper.

The green mess in the backgroun is a problem in film photos but you all have digicam so if you find the problem of the green mess in the background just open the aperture until the background is out of focus, or cut the grass behind or take the flower home.

next post will be about the light.

that beauty contest was a school event?

may be because you mentioned that the flower was in front of that statue, thought that the statue was already there for a decade so the flower might be as well, and a flower couldn't live that long so i thought it was plastic.. and it does kinda look plastic.

and yes, it's a school event, since the end of the school year is coming, we always have this pageant, one for the high school and one for the college.

i noticed on the last 2 photos you posted that the bottom were always cut out, was it purposely done?

lol, both the statue and the flower won't stay long on that place, and I'm sure I didn't do it on purpose may is the film scanner fault because there also a black line in almost all pics, I will check the film.

I thought that kind of events only happened on high school movies, {º_º} anyway nice excuse to take a ton of pictures and since you are a girl, you won't look suspicious I can imagine the faces If I were there taking out my 20cm long lens XP hehehe

lol, i saw that part, but anyway, i don't see why that guy was prohibited to take photos on a school event, it's pretty normal to take photos on any event here and it's even more suspicious for a girl holding an SLR than guys, i guess it varies from customs and tradition.

just realized that we're waaaay off-topic here.

now that you mention the 3 are made in different places at different times of the day but with the same settings
aperture:8
focal distance:300mm
shutter speed 1/250
and I remember because the 3 times I doubted using 5.6-300mm-1/500 with the other two I thing I used the correct setting but with this one may be I should use bigger aperture to make the background even blurry.

you seem to be using a low aperture and a fast shutter speed, what ISO did you use for this one and was it shot in broad daylight?

yes I use 200 iso, the first two were shot in the very south of Spain very sunny even in winter and the last one was taken here in the very north but at noon.
The reason I use low aperture is just in case I made mistake with the focus because the field depth is bigger
