It's actually just good, because it's 100% intentionally comical. You're not laughing AT it, you're laughing WITH it. Obviously the original manga author, writer of freaking Lone Wolf and Cub, didn't intend the "hanging grenades by your ball hair" scene to be 100% serious. Is the comedy very low brow? Absolutely, and proudly so, but the same applies to many shows that don't get the "legendarily bad" tag.

I suspect the main reason stuff like this was so hated on back in the day, and the idea that it's only to be enjoyed "ironically", was the weeb desire to make anime look like a "serious art form". Now we have a very different environment where serious film critics are praising people like Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Makoto Shinkai and Mamoru Hosoda and people will openly praise vulgar low-brow comedies like Ping Pong Club, Panty & Stocking and Azazel-san without thinking "what if this will make anime look bad to serious critics?". But people are only introduced to things like Mad Bull 34 from old fans who say it's a horrible shameful disaster and they're afraid to say "wait, this is just a funny vulgar comedy like all those other shows us modern fans like".

Absolutely agree. I find it a nice parody.
And some times i were actually amazed at the drama they conveyed.

And holy cow! It's from the author of Golgo 13!!!

I'm using this thread when people pull the "it's so bad it's good" line against low brow comedies. They could at least have an actual fucking argument. You're bang-on right.

I still can't recognise whether this stupidity is intentional or serious but I'm 100% certain it's laughable and entertaining as hell. It's pure fun.
I guess such resentment comes from feeling of shame and fear to be bullied for bad taste.
Tbh modern films with Statham (for example) are way more stupid and cringy, but still praised by many people.

Speaking facts people just can’t admit they like something like this without taking a shot at it to seem above it

The intended comedy bits are funny, yes, but the thing is, parody (though I would say more satire) or not, the writing is awful at times. Like for instance in the second episode, we are introduced to Perine, who beats a man half to death in the first 2 minutes we see her on screen and then we are told that she is a master of all sorts of martial arts styles. Then later on she just sits around and screams a lot like some sort of damsel in distress as Edi gets brutally beaten by a bunch of thugs. With what we already know about her she was more than capable of doing something. There is no comedy there, that is just bad writing. I am only 2 episodes in but I've already seen a bunch of instances like this, though that has been the most glaring so far. Something being "fun" doesn't automatically excuse it from elements that are indeed bad.

Though on the other hand I do agree with some of the other things you said, about the culture of the time, and calling it "legendarily bad" and a "shameful disaster" is very much a stretch. But so is saying that it's actually good. I'd more say it's a mixed bag but enjoyable. Also I've never understood the "so bad it's good" mentality anyhow.

To be fair, she was being held at gunpoint by a professional detective and trained mecernaries; realistically, no matter how well she mastered martial arts, she couldn't help Daizaburo.
