People call Clannad melodramatic? THIS is melodrama every 5 minutes someone was crying I could not take it seriously. Menma, Menma, Menma, her name was said about 30 times an episode. Series had a good plot about getting over a lost one, and how you'll never truly get over them but was executed bad, the characters minus Jinta, poppo and menma were just awkward. I know the things I said have been said hundreds of times but this show could've been way better and its disappointing because the premise was so promising.

NGL, I cried watching this every episode since Episode 1. If you can't relate or don't like the show, it's cool, people have different taste.

so much piss-poor melodrama i couldn't take this show seriously, sorry in advance to all who like it. that random love triangle between menma, yukiatsu and tsuruko was completely pointless.

Both Anohana and Clannad were annoying melodramas with unlikable characters.

Clannad is better though I agree.
Well i’m a clannad fanboy it is my favorite so i thought i would like this but... not even close at all. Clannad is melodramatic at times but not to a ridiculous extent like anohana

Good anime, but I never cried while watching it. I was kind of riding on the wave of interest, thinking: “Ok, ok, what are they going to do next?”, and it seems like I got carried away with those thoughts to the point that I missed all the melodrama happening.

Both Anohana AND clannad are too dramatic for me
Also characters in anohana are younger than Clannad's don't expect kids to act like adults

Their actions were pretty justifiable when you think about the trauma of losing a childhood friend. I haven't personally experienced it although I see how it would affect anybody. Anyhow I think the "melodrama" wasn't that bad if you think about their thought process while watching the show

Same I didn’t even cry. It was a good anime. I didn’t know what the ending was gonna be or what exactly was gonna be next. I was sad, but it wasn’t to the point of crying idrk why. Maybe it’s because I heard Menma’s name every 3 seconds and it was starting to annoy me. I still enjoyed to show for the most part.

It quite funny, I didn’t cry at all. I never truly got the show until I saw the whole thing and much like A Silent Voice I didn’t cry even then. Maybe if I ever rewatch I will, but although the show was sad I didn’t find it sad enough to cry. I only cried at A silent voice the second time watching it.

I only cried once and that was for the ending. Once that music started I was tearing up. The rest of the show I didn't really feel much/ anything.

I don't even remember how many times the characters cried, all I just know is that I wanted this whole show to be over. I seriously hate this show so much.

Agreed with @Geel that Clannad is better. Even though I still haven't seen After Story yet.

i never said it was the only love triangle... i just said that one in particular was made solely for poor drama, there was no character development that occurred from said triangle.
you shouldn't resort to assuming i didn't get the show just because of one statement i made, not everyone has to have the same views as you.

Yeah, while watching I was torn between cringing and feeling emotional. Still loved it because it was my first tearjerker anime and there are only a few as effective as Anohana.

I wouldn't classify that one as tearjerker. It had way more going for it.

Not really. A place farther than the universe is also about coping with death and finding closure. In addition to that even the side stories have a lot of similarities. That's just my two cents obviously doesn't matter. One has more comedy than the other. All I know is A place farther than the universe made me cry more than anohana. So I'm officially the bigger cry baby. You lose!!!

>Also

Means it's more of a by-product of one of the many character conflicts. It was handled differently compared to Anohana where everything felt like set up to make people cry. It was rather artificial.

In Sora yori on the other hand you get the feeling the series genuinely wants to explore the characters and the adventure theme.

That's how I differentiate, but everyone has their own way of seeing things. I just don't believe that just because a series makes people cry, has sad moments, deals with emotional themes etc. is enough to label the whole series as a tearjerker. At least when there are other distinctive narrative features taking the spotlight.

The term tearjerker implies force and I associate that with series that were designed with the sole purpose of making you cry.

And A place farther than the universe isn't that? I think it is. I think we can go through a few scenes designed exactly for that....hmmmmmm. There is reality and there is opinion. In your opinion it isn't the same. The facts are that it is.

You mention scenes again whereas I'm speaking of narrative the whole time.

Do me a favor and give me a simple narrative of both shows and that can be the deciding factor here.
I'm not above letting you win this debate senpai. I just wholeheartedly believe these shows are almost parallel.
