I think the braun family dinner scene is mostly CGI, especially Gabi, and the entire dinner table when zooming in into Reiner. Kudos to MAPPA if they are indeed CGI
The dinner table in the zoom cut to Reiner’s face was CG. But other than that it was rotoscoped or traditional 2d animation.

OK! What an episode!
I wasn't around for the first episode's discussion because I was so friggin excited I figured I would be biased as hell. 😅
But now, this episode showed me everything I needed to see to calm my thoughts. @TheCloverfield knocked it out of the park with a well-written, comprehensive post and left me with nothing to talk about. I don't have much else to say other than, supposedly, this is Mappa when pressured with a tight schedule. Now, just imagine. Great job. This is by far the best acting and most ambitious camera work I've seen in AoT.

Exactly my thoughts dude. Take the W!

I heard the Gabi talking scene was rotoscoped, which could explain why it could've looked cgi to u.

Yeah, they could've rotoscoped some of the acting scenes in the episode but it was masterful nonetheless. Also, rotoscoping is technically still 2D so.. 🤷‍♂️

I like how people who understand animation like anime ajay and people who genuinely understand what good character animation is appreciate the episode , while those who are sheep-minded and have a herd mentality of just saying it is bad because people thought it was going to be bad or predicted it was going to be bad are crying how bad the animation is. Just goes to show how dumb people are in this forum in regards to what good animation is and what isn't.

Sadly very sloppy movement animations and some weird rotoscoping with Udo at the harbor and Zeke walking up the stairs, also Gabis dinner conversation was one of the weirdest things I've seen visually animated.. if you can't get in to fluid animations Mappa, just give us a frame and be done with it, this sticks out too much for my taste

It sticks out more because you watching the raw and you are not focusing on any subtitles.
I love you but that makes no sense lol, people will watch it in dub too. xD That said, I actually liked those scenes.

Yeah. If only people knew how hard it is to capture characters moving, acting, and making facial expressions all while the camera is moving and the background is changing around them. Moving the camera alone is a challenge in and of itself, let alone having to get everything else correct.

Pretty great episode today! Personally prefer it over the first one. I've had no issue with the pacing, and even if I would have preferred having no cuts at all, what they cut was in no way indispensable to the arc. The arrangement, from an anime storytelling point of view also makes more sense to me. Moving from flashback to present to flashback again would have been quite weird. (Rip pieck ass but heh)

On the technical side of things, this is most likely the most well animated dialogue episode of the franchise, which surprised me a lot.
The episode has a very surprising amount of character acting and quite ambitious camera work for the most basic of things. Zeke, smoking a a cigarette and Colt walking up the stairs with the camera following their steps, the camera tracking Reiner's head as he wakes up, Zeke giving fucking coffee, Udo getting on edge and expressing his anger through his body language and Gabi doing the same but for her excitement. There's more but I'm too lazy to mention those so I made a little streamable video with some bits of movement from the episode I liked:

VIDEO:

You barely see these in AOT, especially in a pure dialogue episode which impressed me.

Outside of movement, the art itself was also very good, especially in the first half. very strong AD work. I particularely love the lines on the clothing on those Marley uniform, and under the eyes. Reiner also looks the best he has ever looked. The shading, lighting work and expressions were also on point

Props to Reiner's shots which look quite fantastic and very accurate to the emotions Isayama drawin in the manga. Never seen Reiner look this good. That Porco shot is also amazing

The direction was very nice and I wish episode 1 was as well directed as this one. Daisuke Tokudo did a tremendous work and the episode has a LOT of atmosphere. That mini subplot of the Eldian killing himself overnight and his family and neighbours morning his death the next day, all taking place in the background was a super nice touch which added more tension and reminded us that the Liberio ghetto was far from a cozy place. The color work was also pretty nice and I enjoyed it for the most part.

I also really loved the background art of this episode, the props, walls, houses ect were very well drawn and on part with what I expected from Kusanagi. Very good stuff. Another visual aspect that surprised me is the photography. I've seen dozens of complaints about it for last episode when I thought it was honestly innofensive. But in this episode, I found it honestly very good. Probably Asakawa's best work. With this episode's good direction, she succefully gave each scene a different atmosphere and it's very easy to distinct all the different moods of the episode by simply looking at how it looks. The photography helped making the drawings look very crisp and I really hope people watch this episode in high quality because this is how it deserves to be watched. I hope I wont be seeing terrible "no blur" edits that just slap a baffling over-done sharpen filter and saturation.

So yeah, very satisfied with this episode. This and Bystander are probably my two favorite pure dialogue episodes, this one taking the cake visually-wise. Congrats to the team for pulling it off. I hope to see more of those and potentially even better for the future. I can't wait for the big action episodes!

Thank you, good job

Very good thinking. It is on point. And you are welcome mate. They set the harsh reality mood in this ep. I understand why they didn't add Pieck four legs scene here. I hope they will add it in some eps between 3 or 4. 5 is already late to add it bc the you-know-what act. (Manga readers will get it, I wont spoil anime onlys)

Excellent episode. Fucking loved the direction, great variety in colour, character-filled animation and OST choices. Some stand-out scenes include the celebration in the train, Reiner walking through town with the Warrior cadets, and absolutely the scene of Reiner with his family. Great use of lighting, pacing and especially sound design all throughout the ep.

Yaaay finally watched it subbed!

This episode had a massive focus on the world-building of the other side of the ocean, it seems like Reiner is now highlighted as the new main character - or idk, where the hell is Eren or his friends even lmao-. Anyways, the directing was good, some scenes were SO DAMN FLUID like the scene where Gabi was explaining to her family during the dinner how she destroyed the train by herself, her hands' and her head's movement were so great at this scene.

On the other side, some scenes were awfully drawn BUT that's not smth to nitpick about in the first place.

I can say cleary that by watching this episode, I'm rest assured that Falco is my new fav. char. Not only he's so pure and is different than the rest, but the anime seems like to focus on him more, for example, there were few to none scenes where new characters were standing by themselves - i.e the camera is focusing on them only -. While it did for Falco few times during that episode and he also has some inner monologues / thoughts. Probs it emphasizes how important Falco's role will be in the upcoming episodes - well it's just a guess, we will see-.

OVERALL, top-notch episode !!

They've cut out a bit of dialogue and some flashbacks, but the overall story is not really affected by it since it will be probably be present further on.
As others have written, good directing here.

Ok. I just found this info posted by someone online. You know how fort Slava is set to be somewhere in the Middle East, right? Take a look at Baghdad of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 10th century. This is way before WWI/II which is supposedly where the series is taking place, but still, the level of attention and care Isayama gives to the story blows my mind not to mention his knowledge of pretty much the whole world's history. 🤣
I don't know how I didn't realize this sooner, fort Slava is a reference to Baghdad from the 10th century!

As much as I love the manga, this was way better paced in comparison, the manga loved to focus on one scene for too long and bore you with it, the anime shook that up a bit and switched between scenes a bit quicker to get the exposition to the point and explained nicely.

As expected they trimmed a whole barrage of things from every scene, and the whole thing while it doesn't present any apparent issue to anime onlys doesn't make justice to the manga content. And as expected they're probably going to adapt the whole Reiner's flashback in one, ONE, freaking episode.

I really don't understand what's the point of that rotoscopic stuff if i can literally see the framerate and discern the individual frames passing one after the other. They should spare such effects if the result end up looking worse.

The Braun family dinner scene was garbage. The worst part easily.

1) That Gabi and her dad gesturing animation looked like i was watching a fucking videogame cutscene from early 2000', ugly. I was reminded of the Berserk adaptations....

2) I really don't like that they removed Reiner covering his smile with the hand, and his relatives thinking it was out of PTSD from the "devil" islanders. Didn't those MAPPA morons realized it was a callback to when Eren in the training days almost felt sick out of PTSD of remembering the titans? Including it wouldn't have change anything to the pace since it was so short, and i think it was an interesting parallel among all the Eren-Reiner parallels Isayama has drawn.

Some still shots were really gorgeous. Everything in the train scene was especially good and my favorite part of this adapted episode. The port scene with the warriors candidate and Reiner also had its merits, although that Udo gesturing animation.....

Tone it down a bit my guy, even you have to admit the manga loves to spend too much time on one scene with exposition in the early bit of the marley stuff. These changes were needed for episodic format.

Looking forward to more of your complaints about the animation and what they skip next week, and the next week..... and the next week until the series ends.

Just going to point out that you gave season 3 part 1 a 9/10 despite them skipping a lot of content in the uprising arc. Which what Mappa is doing isn't even comparable, just saying.
