Wow, this was quite the emotional episode. Full of talking but it wasn't boring at all. Seeing Subaru being able to just have long heart to hearts with his parents was nice. He got some baggage off his chest and I feel like he was able to gain some closure, especially with the sendoff to his mom. Now he has to deal with Echidna again, looking forward to that.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

Man I knew this would hit me in the feels but I actually cried in both the father and mother scenes. Subaru's mom and dad seem like they were really awesome parents. I am glad he got to spend time with them even if its all in his head. Great back story this week.

Also, before he remembered he was living in his past, how did he know the pain would stop at 8:00? What's up with that? Did he have some sort of condition? Anxiety attacks?

Whenever he felt those pains, the same sound effect that plays when he tries to tell someone about Return by Death played, implying that he was experiencing early signs before he switched worlds. I don't think that the time had anything to do with it, as that was just confirmation to himself that he wouldn't be making it to school. Anxiety could still be somewhat part of it, though.

This episode hit like a truck. A complete feels trip from beginning to end. I'm a very emotional person, but this must be the first episode in a while that made me shed genuine tears. Probably one of the best episodes of the series so far, and we just started the arc.

The scene where Subaru tells his father how he gave up in life because he realized he wasn't as special as he believed already got me emotional, but when he broke down in front of his parents in the two instances he was alone with them, I couldn't stop crying. Nowdays, it's rare to see an isekai protagonist actually caring for the people he/she left behind in his world, so this was a welcomed event.

This episode also shed light on the actions of Subaru back at the beginning of the third arc. After the incident of the demon beasts in the climax of the second arc, he again tasted the feeling of being special and valued by other people, so he left that get over his head and ended humilliating himself and Emilia with his careless actions. I liked him before, but this episode in general made me appreciate more Subaru as a character.

Subaru's parents managed to be very likeable despite being in one episode (and is unlikely they will appear for a while). The inconditional love and support they gave to his son was sweet, fun and adorable to see. Almost wish they could stick out for a little more, but I understand they fulfilled their role quite well and they managed to give Subaru some closure respecting the things he left in his world, so it's all fine.

Echidna dressed as a schoolgirl looked cute, though I think she's going to give lots of troubles to poor Subaru.

To think that Subaru would return to his homeworld though. True to Subaru though his family sure is something. Love the nod to Asterisk wars as well. Have to say the areas near their home sure is pretty and even more so given the season. The opportunity to see what Subaru's relationship with his family like sure was fun. Seeing his revisit his past mistakes and reevaluate himself was also interesting. Subaru's father though sure was a fun guy. Overall a pretty calm ep that focused on Subaru making amends to his family and in the process reforging his determination in his quest. Quite curious to see how the witch of Greed has to say next though. Love how catchy the ending theme is.

RE:Zero is back to its root again!

So much feel in this episode.
This episode basically justify every actions/ decisions Subaru made in the first season.
It explained why Subaru did the stupid things he did in each acts.

This episode also makes the whole isekai premise meaningful too.
RE:Zero really is a realistic take of what if you REALLY transfer to another world.
You don't get op, you don't do whatever you want, and you might also never get to see your family again.

The seiyuus of the parents are Ino and Kiba from Naruto lol.

I got kinda bored in the first half but it got somehow interesting as it went on.

Also... that Absolute Duo and Asterisk War poster in his room though =D

Very cool seeing Subaru's roots, even better actually seeing an Isekai MC's parents. I loved how he was given a chance to interact with both his parents to better develop himself. His father was entertaining and his mother was so kind. It was interesting t see Subaru having internal conflict with himself trying to live up to his father. And that whole being the best is something very common in life. At young ages, many see ourselves being overjoyed winning and think we become the best. But as life goes on, we realize that there is always someone out there who is better. And the realization that we are not the best kinda hits.

This episode really offered so much, a look into Subaru's old life, his struggles, a nice pic of Echnida in school outfit, and a nice quote from Subaru's mom
"We didn't have you because we wanted you to do something for us. WE had you because we wanted to do something for you."
"Perfection is perception. For me, humanity's imperfections is what makes it perfect"

I dropped Shield Hero pretty early on cuz I alrdy felt it's trash since episode 1 XD.
I gave it some chance to ep 7 and still thought it's trash :P
I spoiled the rest of the plot of season 1 by watching some youtube reviews, makes me believe even more it's trash :P

One of my biggest wonder is why most American think Shield Hero is good or it's something original.

Anxiety attacks, you’ve never felt that? That was very relatable to me. The feeling of wanting to go and do something but you just can’t. You’re shackled by an invisible force (anxiety) but once the clock strikes past the time. You’re set free because it’s simply to late to even go now. You felt a sudden rush of relief but also guilt.

Wow, that was such a powerful episode! I never really thought about what Subaru left behind because I was sucked in by the 'Isekai adventure' aspect of the anime but this episode really hit it home; he'll never see his parents again and from their perspective, their son went out to the Konbini and never came back.

I thought this was a really clever way of showing how Subaru's past made him who he is because obviously, we only saw his personality from being isekai'd and not what made him that person. A+ episode!

Amazing episode.

In so many other isekais, we never see or only see a glimpse of the MC's past. It's all thrown away in favor of focusing on the new world. But if the MCs still retain their personality, it would only make sense that they still carry the weight of their past memories. I'm glad we were able to view Subaru's past and the struggles of his past life.

We saw it bleed into his interactions with everyone else. When he first arrived at Roswaal's mansion, his initial request was to work there, so he could make something of himself vs being stuck in his father's shadow. In his old life, no matter what he did, he would only be meeting expectations as Natsuki Kenichi's son. When he was working himself to death in Roswaal's mansion, but still acting like a clown and being hyper, we see now it was because he was doing the same shit before to try to emulate his dad's charisma. When he threw a tantrum in the palace, it was because he was afraid of being irrelevant again. A lot of people hated these parts of Subaru's character in S1, but this should provide some context for why he acted the way he did.

Best episode of the season so far(in my humble opinion). I'm glad we finally see something about Subaru's past. This is also a great thing for the show since it makes it even more different than it already was from the rest of the isekai shows (normally, this kind of shows never show how was the mc's life at his world).

Here's a question for the people (if someone has an idea, please answer it): What was the meaning behind those lines between Subaru and his mom about mayonnaise? I did not get it

Bitc* please, even Kazuma from Konosuba acts in a more natural and logical way about "what am i doing in the new world" than Subaru.

The reason: cause Zuma was killed in Japan. While Tappei forgot to do it, but made his protagonist act with the same "i dont care for my previous life", until this episode, and sadly

I read manga pages of this episode and I have to say the anime did an amazing job. They truly fleshed it out and brought everything to life more than I was expecting.

I love this episode. It has so many layers, so many flavors. It fleshed out Subaru as a character as well making commentary on the isekai genre and anime “otaku” culture. Family, loneliness, expectations, anxiety, self worth and acceptance are just some of the themes here.

I think you missed something; Subaru was clearly suffering from anxiety and depression and it makes you hate yourself and feel like you deserve for the people around you to dislike you just as much. Subaru wasn't bitching about having a shitty life or being self-pitying.

Hm.. Subaru's mom has a bit pointy eyes.. A bit reminds Emilia, to be honest.. Well, sometimes you like girls like your mom..
Parents are surprisingly positive and stuff.. With Subaru not going to school.. I mean, if they'd be accepting is one thing.. But they are really trying their best to be positive..
Oh, Absolute Duo anime on the poster at 04:09 on the left one..
Now that I see Subaru just walking around in his sports track suit.. He looks like some delinquent or something, lol..
Yeah, Subaru's closed eyes really looked pointy as his mother's at that shot at 05:23..0
Well, honestly.. Partially Subaru's dad is right that school isn't everything.. Many people will get their profession or stuff regardless of how they finished the school.. And only 1/3 if not less work on specialty gained as well.. So in the end school isn't that important, to be honest.. But still, kids, stay in school.. ;P
Yeah, Subaru's eyes are really actually pointy.. Now that I keep attention to it..
Well, you wanted to impress people, Subaru.. You still can do that, if that's what is important to you.. Just by other means, not vandalizing property or something.. There are other ways to impress people, if that is what you want..
You also tried to hang out and be friendly at high school.. Failed at it.. But.. In this case maybe joining the club could help?.. If you're in one of those Japanese schools, where it's norm to have different clubs.. Maybe you'd get to hang out with people with close interests..
And start from Zero.. This episode really brings the name of anime, isn't it?.. Re:Zero.. Starting not even from one.. But from zero.. Honestly, life is like that.. Majority of people have to change their jobs, majority (over 50%) of people divorce.. Life isn't over even if you sucked at school, or your house burnt, or you went bankrupt, or many other things.. Even if it sucks.. Enormously sucks.. It's just the worst shit.. Still.. There is way to start.. From Zero.. ... This title drop just makes anime much more meaningful, isn't it?.. It feels so to me, at least..
You know.. If Subaru's adventures would end up in returning to real world.. Yeah, it'd be good for parents, he'd look after them in old time and stuff.. But I also personally wouldn't want Subaru's journey to end.. For him to be separated from Emilia..
Wait.. Subaru's dad name is Natsuki.. As he's so buff.. Masaka.. Is Subaru's dad - Buffsuki from Doki Doki Literature Club in another universe?.. ;D
And just like that Echidna fixed Subaru's life pretty much.. If he'd be alive, he'd come in terms with his feelings, would go to school, would try to become Subaru in his life.. Echidna did a lot for Subaru already.. The Witch of Greed.. The Greed for truth and knowledge, I guess, this time.. ;P But yeah.. Honestly really impressive..
The great episode.. Maybe the greatest so far in the series, to be honest.. It's not as exciting as some others.. But it's the most meaningful out of them, it feels.. Re:Zero finally reached its' name, meaning of its' name.. To start from Zero.. Just a great episode..

Subaru s family including himself have a weird mayonnayse addiction, nothing more to it. He ll put too much on a dish or just outright drink from the bottle, think Isekai quartet even joked on it in the recent season, the conversation is a bit more detailed in the novel mentioning they all have a different bottle but for obvious reasons it was cut.

Once it was past 8:00, if he did his usual commute to school, he would be late to class no matter what. So at that point, it's easy for him to just think "well, i'm gonna be late anyways, so i guess i have no choice but to try again tomorrow." He had anxiety up to that point, but once it struck 8:00 and he was able to tell himself that, most of the anxiety went away cause he knew he wouldn't have to go to school and interact with his classmates for the day. I found it very relatable cause I've told myself the exact same thing and have also put some arbitrary time limit on myself before deciding to try again later like Subaru. And just like him, a lot of the anxiety subsided when I thought to myself I wouldn't have to deal with it immediately.

Wow. What a fantastic episode, maybe even the best in the series so far (though it's got some very stiff competition at that top end). I never anticipated getting such an in-depth look at Subaru's past and home life before he got isekaied, but I am so glad the series made that decision.

Now we can truly understand why Subaru acts the way he does and, in particular, gain some fascinating new insights into that conversation with Rem in episode 18: Subaru's childhood saw him burdened with expectation from a young age, and when he couldn't match that anymore he acted more and more outlandishy to gain attention and keep people interested in his "talentless" self. It's only natural that he would view his actions in the parallel world up to that point as being another of his "poses", another way to gain attention and mask his "emptiness". And, upon becoming self-aware of the meaning behind his eccentric actions - yet being unable to break out of such habits - it is only natural that he'd come to hate himself.

That aside, getting to see his parents again and confront these issues seems huge for Subaru, even more than the episode 18 conversation was: the problem behind it all was that everyone expected Subaru to match his father, so while Rem's perspective was one vital step in Subaru's development, it wasn't the be all and end all. No, he needed to talk it out with the people behind those expectations, and in doing so I think Subaru has picked up some hugely valuable lessons that will help him going forwards.

And the goodbyes were seriously emotional, knowing full-well that he'll never see his mother or father again and knowing that they'll never know what happened. Even if it was only a dream as part of a trial, it's sweet that he got to properly say goodbye and thank them for everything one last time.

Episodes like this are why I love Re:ZERO. An absolute masterpiece.

I really enjoyed this episode though I felt like they really milked it towards the end. The Subaru/Mom dialogue for ~7 minutes towards the end of the episode really wasn't necessary but everything else was fine. Kind of disappointed they focused so much on backstory and character here since I don't think that fits really well with the rest of Re:Zero but they did it in a respectable way and it got some tears out of me (lol).
