----------------------------------------
Probably the weakest part of Kaiji so far do to the lack of focus on Kaiji himself. The gamble was anxiety bringing and intense, and it was fun exploring such a specific part of human nature rather than the broader scope part 1 took. However, I felt like we had far too many descriptions of the rules, I got it pretty early on and as the manga went on we just kept getting it explained over and over again. For example: MARIO IS IN SEAT 2, THEREFORE HE SEES CHANG IN SEAT 1 ISN'T THE SAVIOR SO HE MUST PRESS IT BEFORE CHANG, BUT GIVE MITSUYAMA ENOUGH TIME TO PRESS IT BEFORE HIM IN CASE HE IS THE SAVIOR. Not exactly word for word, but it went over this again and again. This part felt like it went in circles at times.

I really enjoy the dynamic between Kaiji and Kazuya, they are pretty much yin and yang, and Kazuya is the first real antagonist that Kaiji talked to as an equal. Muraoka somewhat had this too, but they didn't converse in the same way, I felt like Kazuya and Kaiji seemed like friends at some points which is a fresh way to look at a villain in Kaiji. I also have to assume he is supposed to be a mirror of Fukumoto in a way, writing horrible stories about people reaching their peak and seeing their true nature.

Right when I started to feel a little bored, volume 8 happened and I think it made it one of the stronger conclusions to a Kaiji part. Half the volume was emotionally crushing, people screaming for their lives and betraying their friends. Just cruel. Would you pay 700k to save two poor strangers in front of your face when you had nothing to do with the gamble? I'm excited for the friendship between the new Asian Three. It's also pretty interesting that part 3 lead directly to part 4(and took only about 3 hours iirc) and part 4 is leading directly to part 5. No time skips, just engaging stuff back to back.

Overall, I felt this part had a specific focus on the power of trust and friendship, as well as analyzing whether human nature is one of selfishness or selflessness (yin and yang), but it really did much less than the previous parts. Chang, Mario, and Mitsuyama weren't explored as much as past characters due to the limited interaction we got to see with them. Despite that I would like to applaud their interesting and horrifyingly realistic flashbacks, which did lead to some good characterization. Kaiji and Kazuya were fun together, but there wasn't much else going on. Despite being in the same vein, thematically this part didn't achieve as much as part 1, narratively this part didn't do as good as part 3. This is probably my least favorite part, although it's comparable to part 2, and it was still a great read.

At first, I didn't expect much from this part, but as time went by it grew to become my second favorite part along with part 1.
Sure, there's a lack of mindgames, ut the psychological horror more than made up for that and the upcoming part looks interesting.

Why MAL says it has 100 chapters when it has 97? the last volume (10) has 3 chapters from One Poker-hen.

I liked how we got to see what Muraoka was up to post part 3 and also Mikiko lol. Really shows how barely any time has gone by. Overall part 4 is the weakest for me but still very good. It seems part 5 will continue the theme of Kaiji's truth VS Kazuya's truth. Complete opposite of each other. I'm actually surprised Kaiji has as much humanity as shown after being betrayed several times. He should be way worse than Kazuya, but it goes to show not everyone is like Andou.

Loved this part so much even tho Kaiji wasn't the main runner in this one..
But KAZUYA.. man what a twisted character! he can't see any "good" in people or he doesn't see it anymore.. always looking for their ill will, negative emotions, lies & dishonesty..
almost the exact opposite of Kaiji whom we've seen many times put his trust in people & gave chances even after getting F****d over multiple times HARD.
In short, I like Kazuya a lot.. i expected him in his first appearance in the Mahjong part to be more like his father unreachable, but he's so flawed, broken & twisted.. i really like that.
Another character shined in this part CHANG.. Out of the 3 main group:
- He made mistakes at the start.
- Made almost foolproof method to counter Kazuya's game. (Hand raise at 30 seconds)
- Calmed down & Stayed on point with his 30 seconds counting.
- Was the first to catch Kazuya's hidden trick "random" savior. (which even Kaiji didn't catch!)
- Was conflicted but DIDN'T betray.
- In the end got F****d over HARD.
Very similar to our man Kaiji.

Part 3 & 4 were a fantastic read back to back..I'm surprised they stopped the anime at Part 2 !
but i guess Mahjong isn't everyone's thing! (an OVA could be good enough instead of full season)

Up to this point my ranking: 1>=3=4 >> 2 (Part 2 had its issues, it wasn't bad at all but the other Parts were that good for me)
