| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Talk about a chapter. Akagi started with a meditation on what it means to be a human, never 100% or 0%, never black and white. Rather a percentage of us wants to live when we want to die, and a percentage of us wants to die when we want to live. We say we hate destruction and death, but if we really did, we could avoid it, rather we seek it. Thrills, the pleasure of salvation. Through gambling, speed, bloody fighting, our life emerges. Not because we want destruction, but because we want salvation, we want to brush with death and make it out okay. This conversation flashed so much through my head. As Akagi spoke about life and death being two sides of the same coin, it made me think of his other work Kurosawa. I found calling back to the Akagi manga which I haven’t even read charming as well, it totally made this chapter feel like a culmination of everything. It gives us a window to read that first chapter where Akagi, whether he knew why at the time or not, played chicken and stepped on the gas, willing to die if he wasn’t spared. A notion I’m sure was the basis of writing Akagi, someone who embellishes the strong human desire to wind up dead, making him endlessly entertaining and mad. A man who mixes life and death like water and whiskey. It makes me even more eager to read Akagi one day. |
