THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
(Episodes 1 and 2 were watched at the pre-airing by Crunchyroll at London MCM Comic Con on 25th October 2019)

I like the characters and their relationship so far. That girl has real personality and the boy is something of a curiosity - what actually happened to him previously? What was the second youkai he ate and why does he refuse to say what it was when he's happy to talk about eating the mermaid? Well, not happy exactly but at least prepared to do so. It's certainly an interesting setup, and the mysteries were pretty decent, too. Not something I've really seen other stuff like before.

Of the two pre-airings, this was the one I was less interested in beforehand, but it actually looks the better of the two.

The only downside is the rather contrived cliffhangers at the end of both the first two episodes. (Unless the stream was cut off a few seconds early? Not impossible but I didn't get that impression)

I look forward to watching more of this when it airs properly.

So is the episodes available in the internet? This give me an idea that the studio must have finished at least 4 episodes as of now, since the first two episodes aired two months before the anime was started.

I won't spoil anything about the male protagonist's ability and past but the story won't reveals the second youkai he ate in the past until around EP5 or EP6, so you have to wait for a long while for knowing it lol.

Only if someone managed to record the entire thing without anyone noticing and has since uploaded it (I'm not going to look for it). There were quite a few officials of one kind or another at various places around the auditorium who would doubtless have kicked out anyone they saw trying to record anything - and nothing like that happened.

I won't spoil anything about the male protagonist's ability and past

I kinda figured out the episodes won't be uploaded when I can't finds the episodes anywhere online. Guess I will wait until the show aired at January 2020, but still thanks for the answer.

I watched it in November at Anime NYC!

But given all the actions-tensions in the first episode, this episode was kind of meh! Only talk and talk!

I just love the character chemistry between our two main leads. The spraying scene on Kotoko was comedy gold.

The balanced mood between the comedic content and the serious tone of the storytelling has my sold on the show. We also got a giant snake introduced from this episode so I'm rather curious what other supernatural creatures this anime will show.

now i can see what they want to show us in this anime, steel ghost and rikka will appear after episode 6 so what we will have before it? simple, let's introduce a little mystery and some character development with different order from in the manga. basically, it is same like what we experience in goblin slayer

Having read the manga, at this point I would only start to recommend the anime once more episodes have aired. There's gonna be a lot more cliffhangers I'm sure.

Love both the characters. Even the side characters are interesting like this episode's serpent. Don't understand the need for that cliffhanger since the next ep is about something else.

Is this entire series going to consist of sitting and storytelling? The characters are still very bad in my opinion, and the messy plot doesn't help.

Was so engrossed with the conversation I didn't even notice how quickly the episode went by until the 'to be continue' screen popped up. Strangely enough though, I don't even care much about the issue going on but rather I think I just enjoy seeing the characters interact.

Agreed. I also like the tiny bits of comedy in there. Like Kotoko thinking that this will be a long story when the snake starts asking more and more questions.

The cliffhanger was somewhat strange. The preview for next episode looked as if it will be a different story. But maybe they connect more than I am thinking.

A story telling anime with youkaï ?

Just take my money already

That was a really nice episode, I was really absorbed in her story
The cliffhanger was quite surprising however, I expected the episode to wrap up the entire mystery's story

I didn't mind the talking much, which is strange because usually I prefer episodes to have action. I guess I just like the characters and their interactions- they're both pretty likeable imo- hopefully things pick up soon though.

Ah giant white snakes, it's almost like Sekiro all over again. Also that OP is lit

And man did that flow by. I'm not usually one for slower paced style shows but Kotoko is mainly what keeps me hooked

It's a very dialogue-heavy show. The next arc (starting next ep judging by the preview) will have some more actual action in it, but it's still gonna have lots of dialogue lol

I really love this show, it reminds me a lot of Inuyasha with the lore, setting and mythology involved. Especially that first arc of Inuyasha. Love the banter between Iwanaga and Kuro and there whole dynamic.

She's a new waifu for sure.

Snake boy reminded me of Miroku lol. May have to pick up the manga because this is awesome

The staff working on this show really need to be given props.

You could easily fuck up a dialogue heavy show, it could be too fast (you'd miss important details and get frustrated with the pacing) or too slow (which will bore the viewer) but this looks very well done to me here.

Fairly good paced dialogue with the visuals backing them up in almost every scene, it's really visible in the murder discussion when we saw the parties involved.

So good shit, this had me glued to the screen.

Can't wait to find out the real reason the suspect threw the corpse into the swamp.. like.. wtf, why would anyone care? This episode felt like a filler with nothing driving the story. It's a shame I'll have to drop this cause the art, character designs and voice actors are all good.

I love Kotoko, I love her personality that makes her more lovable, besides that in this episode I was surprised with her deductive ability to solve this case that the giant serpent presented to her.

Kotoko keeps Kuro under surveillance, that ghostly cloth that hid in her dress did not hold Kuro's gaze and Kotoko's face as if she said: nothing happens here, ignores the ghostly cloth that has just run away.
I'm still not satisfied on how Kuro got his Yokai skills, he reveal that he ate mermaid meat, but what is the other Yokai and what forced him to consume the meat of both Yokais, he hides many things, in one of those for that reason He also ended his relationship with Saki.
The tantrum of Kotoko was very funny, it seems that she still does not get Kuro to be interested in her, her stature does not make her see a good match, but the funny thing is that she went to the department of Kuro to insist to accompany her and in the end She received some things to go to the mountains and something to eat.
The interesting one in this episode was the giant snake, his curiosity for Aoi was intriguing, especially for a deity that was forgotten, the point is that the giant snake did not understand why Aoi got rid of the corpse in his lake, but Kotoko knew how to give him a good explanation and also managed to tie certain points that felt incomplete.
Anyway, I loved the episode that had a good storytelling, Kotoko has a good way of ordering ideas, deductive ability and has a good way of exposing the evidence, but it seems that finally Kotoko already has a real idea of the reason why Aoi did such an act, it is a shame to wait until next week.
In the next episode the ghost of the faceless girl with the steel pillar will appear, it makes me curious how this case will be for Kotoko, especially because this ghost comes out in some posters and in the PV, so I assume it will be relevant, plus Saki appeared and the classic awkward encounter might happen.
Today we had OP and I liked it a lot, it gives some hints of some ghosts that I assume will appear in future episodes, but the parts where Kotoko appears are very cute.

Not quite what I had expected for this to flow this way, but it wasn't really bad. Like before I knew the episode was already over. I do have to say that this Serpent was very hard to please, he was dissatisfied with every possible explanation Kotoko gave..

Seems next week will pick up the action a bit more.

Opening is great, very nice song and great visually!

It was pretty good.

To be honest, I thought it would have a little more action oriented sequences thrown in there but despite the heavy dialogue it's still quite nice.

I'm curious though, it kinda feels like Kotoko already gave the serpent the answer for why the body was thrown in but at the end it still asks her the question. From the looks of it, the next episode is gonna be entirely different so did they just cut the actual resolution in the story, essentially just telling the viewer what could have happened?

It was fine, but compared to the first episode this was completely lacking. If I wanted to watch a conversation oriented detective show I would rather watch Detective Conan. Hope that the other episodes are more like the previous one.

I agree more action would probably shoot this up pretty high on my list, it's like a solid 8.1 anime w/o it.
Majority of Monogatari is mediocre. There is barely any chemistry between half of the cast. Usually just some chick diving in to a monologue to Aragagi (The arc after bake is hard to get through).
This has so much heart from the characters with the most entertaining character in a while. The male is pretty great too. She plays all her cards and he just goes for the blunt turn down, what a man.

Cool. Murder mystery involved too? I thought this anime would be mostly action and youkai stuff but it has detective stuff too. I enjoy it.

Unlike most anime watchers, I don't mind anime with mostly talking lol.

Cliffhanger tho whyyyy? I guess next episode is still entirely focused on this swamp story.

I'm rather fond of dialogue-heavy shows, but I was baffled by the end of this episode. It can be summarized as "I present hypothesis A, except that was a red herring. Thus I posit hypothesis B, but it was also a red herring. Now how about hypothesis C? Bingo! It was a red herring. To be continued..."

I still like the characters and was genuinely entertained throughout the entirety of the episode, but in the end had to question the point of it all.
