THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Shangahi is pretty cool and it didn't take long for the drama to begin.

We got a major match challenge and Mao's brother showing up. Pretty much or less a buildup episode although I kinda like how they chose the food for contest.

Xie Lu will start the challenge against that Luo Kong, whom by the way is suppose to be a "legendary dim sum master". The fuck is that? I just love it when this show overhypes things and people.

Sweet bun contest should be interesting, I can't wait for the old man's "legendary" skills.

they did Sanjie's dirty. Spoiler for 1997 series, how would the tournament contest work now with 3 v 3 instead 4 v 4. I feel like people that didnt watch the original will feel incomplete with the recap montages and slowmo frame of this glossy series. And if this is one cour 12 episodes, mean we're stuck with the same result minus the bloody bits. The original after this arc became filler changing the emperor's storyline and the boss behind the underground dark cooking society, which mean we won't see Fei, mao's true rival that been teased since episode 1.

Sweet bun contest is making me hungry. Wish I had some sweet buns from China or Japan, they're the best.

Was Sanche's round in the first anime a filler? I was looking forward to see him being part of the team for this competition, but I guess it won't happen... Well, at least we are starting with Shell, and I love him so I can take it.

Shanghai, the city of devils. And to think that the Cooking Underworld would act now, is something I did not think to foreshadow now (it was supposed to happen 2 episodes after (plus filler) in the original), and for the most part the production staff just went for gold instead of the journey went through. @GameHotelH pretty much correct for the most part.

Seeing Sanche was a delight, but also omitting some part of the original will leave some doubting as well of how the sequence of events go that helps.

First match, Dim Sum. Shell vs. Old gramps Rakon. Let's just see how this goes.

Quite a cheerful competition, I remember in the manga has scarier atmosphere.

They should of continue after the first anime with new material instead of bombing this one in one cour without potential of s2 . Unlike soma. They could of redo the stuffs after boat tournament with a recap instead of starting to remake the second half of 98 original series.

Disappointed they missed Sanjie's duel. with his Turtle soup Battle.
Also the lack of cutting noises and wok stir frying sound effects is making this not as immersive as the original.

So they really skipped Sanjie's cooking parts making this a 3v3 match instead of the original 4v4 cooking match. That part is pretty important as it shows Sanjie's progress as a great chef and not like the slacker he used to be.
