----------------------------------------
This volume contains two stories, "Strange beings" and "Life". The first one is a take on karmic retribution and time flow, which was short, but pretty exciting, and with roots in Japanese folklore stories. I enjoyed it a lot, although it's interesting to know whether Sakonnosuke ended up healing her wounded father after the battle or not. He is another incarnation of Saruta btw. And the paintings of various spirits were really cool!

"Life" is, too, ultimately a story about atoning for one's sins, but set in the future. Once again Tezuka raises the question of what makes somebody human - however now it's not robots or aliens he's concerned about, but human clones. Although this entire volume was the shortest one of all, I think it was pretty good in presenting its message in an engaging story. It also felt more adult, too - I noticed more female nudity here than in any other of the previous volumes.
P.S. Also cool to see Saruta once more in "Life", I've really grown to like this recurring character more.

"Life" is the first time I realized that this work is not really relevant anymore in scientific progress, as far as I know cloning is really possible in our current technology, Dolly was cloned in the 90s for example. But it is still a great story anyway, just like 1984 is still one of the best literature work everyone should read.
"The Slave is the have-not, the oppressed one with nothing to spare.
But because the Slave is in that despairing situation, having nothing, it can kill the Emperor !"
