So this is a light novel source material not a manga but No this is adapted terribly. (Read 8 books of Danmachi and part of 9.) I've been holding off on the weekly to binge watch and just watched it through to current today. I'll start with this season is the highest point for me in this series. Books 6 and 7 were GOLD. Seven is the best book hands down (Ishtar Arc) and Apollo war games was second favorite. They do cover most of the major plot points but leave out some really important stuff that should have been adapted.
First episode went well except Bell was supposed to have an IMPORTANT conversation with Hermes talking about the Grant Quest (which is why they are fighting in the dungeon in the first place.....) and how the Zeus and Hera families (The original most powerful families in Orario) were close in completing the grand quest but failed. With their families weakened the families in power now drove them out.
Episode two was perfect.
Episode three was good but they left out the important part of to get Lily free that had to give Soma the Hestia knife as compensation for her payment out the familia, with the agreement that when they beat Apollo's familia in the war games they were to buy it back from Soma.
This leaves another Important thing not adapted, when Welf forged Bell's second knife in season 1, he told him that "We will use the other half of the Minotaur horn for when I get to level 2 and get the forge ability." Since he became level two in episode 1. This happened and was never adapted, the knife was Ushiwakamaruni-shiki (yea long name and pulled from wiki lol), it was a Red Knife that was stronger than the Hestia knife at Bell's current level. During the Fight Bell used his two red blades, Ushiwakamaruni-shiki and Ushiwakamaruni since he didn't have the Hestia knife. That wasn't adapted for some reason?
Now Is the Travesty that was episode 4. The whole scope of the battle felt wrong, underplayed, probably just so J.C could animated it easier. First off the Wolf Crozzo magic swords were underpowered it was sad. In the book each time Ryuu swung a magic sword it took out a whole section of the wall. She devastated a whole side of the castle wall. They were so powerful that everyone in the audience and in Apollo's guild knew they were Crozzo magic swords (This sets up an important plot point in book 8). They say it in the anime but fifty people (Half of the force) rushed out to try and stop Ryuu, they say fifty in the anime but man I saw like ten people lol.
My biggest thing is they cut short the Hyacinthus fight and it was just poorly portrayed. None of the emotions of the battle were captured at all. They didn't capture how enraged he was when fighting Bell. I mean it talked about how enraged Hyacinthus was the "just who the hell are you" was written as all caps with an exclamation point. They just barely say it in the anime lol. This fight and the explanations around it was 5% of this book (used my kindle to see start and end percentages).
They didn't adapt my favorite line which was after the who the hell are you line Hyacin. shouted I'm Level Three! as he went on the counter attack. This leads into a Segway with Hestia and Hermes talking about how Bell a level 2 could drive back a level three (which in this world is impossible normally).
I think that they adapt Bell's Argonaut poorly as well. It takes away from the drama. For Bell to use Argonaunt he needs a trigger which is to envision a hero in his situation. The passage from book five just so you get an idea.
"Argonaut's trigger, a clear vision of a hero. This time, he saw the warrior Argis. The seemingly immortal hero had fought to his dying breath, slaying monster after monster in order to take back a stronghold that had been overrun by a horde. His courageous deeds were legendary".
The Ishtar arc is slowed down and has been pretty good so far outside so minor complaints. If you like this story do yourself a favor and read the books they're so much better. Even if you watched season 1 read books 3 and 5 because they're fantastic. So it was long but that's my opinion. Sorry for any spelling mistakes cause after taking the time to write this I'm not proof reading it lol.
Also except for some brush up just now and pulling that quote out it's been maybe two years since I've read the books so there most likely important things I'm missing from memory. |
