As much as I wanted to dislike this for not being a purely Professor Layton & Luke adaptation, I actually ended up enjoying this a lot. However it's very clear that this was not very successful by the shockingly low number of people that have actually watched this... I'd love another Layton-related anime, perhaps an Alfendi one, but most of all a Professor Layton & Luke one, hopefully an adaptation of the first 3 games (as I'm sure many would agree). But what are the chances? :(

Probably shouldn't judge kids shows based on MAL numbers, the target audience simply isn't here. Look at Yokai Watch numbers and compare it to how popular it is in Japan. Also Netflix just picked up this show for the west, so it wasn't very accessible. I feel like a continuation of Katrielle is probably more likely than an adaptation of the main Layton games though; Katrielle has established an anime-only fanbase and the format of the story is easier to adapt to anime. But it's possible, Level-5 is pretty involved in animation, and Layton did get a movie a few years back (and they did decide to go original over adapting the games then).
