Turn A is probably my favorite Gundam because it combines War of the Worlds, and some other Victorian/Edwardian fiction, with Princess Kaguya, with Universal Century Gundam, with nuclear weapons, with gender transgression into an anime that feeds my fetish for Victorian/Edwardian/Meiji-Taisho womens' clothing. I love Diana/Kihel's character design.
This might be hard for someone who hasn't seen the TV series to follow due to its fast pace and use of jargon, and it demands the attention of the viewer to keep up. The beginning that introduces the characters is far too compressed for the liking of probable newcomers I think. Still, managing to compress 25 episodes into something coherent isn't easy and the movie is quite a thrill ride moving from battle to battle with some necessary in-between moments, like Queen Diana's poignant visit to the Heim home.
Some of the really great moments from the TV series such as Laura's cow, the washing machine Gundam and Diana's stint in the Civil War hospital have been sadly cut however. Also, the problems with food supply and insurgency that caused the Moonrace engineers to defect are unexplained entirely, so it's not really a substitute for the series if you haven't already seen it. In my case, I wanted to to re-watch Turn A but in a very fast time, so it certainly works for me for that purpose.
