Well that was extremely confusing and did not meet my expectations. Some of the music so did not match the scenes. One scene had upbeat marching music, yet Ray was crying emotionally. Also that hug with Charles and Renton where he asked if he smelled...Ugh.

edit:
This post by @Radikel basically sums up how I felt about this movie (though I was able to read the subtitles).

This was an absolutely terrible start to this trilogy. Not sure it could've been handled any worse. I did like the new scenes and the music (while not always used in the best moments) was enjoyable. But overall, very subpar. That editing, yikes. I hope the 2nd film does a lot better than this.

It seems like the movie is not only about that incident, but also story after the TV series? But it does the play back and forward too often... so confusing (though the story connected at the end, in terms of both the movie itself and my understanding).

Renton has trauma about not able to save Eureka then... A trip to meet her again begins next.

It's unique to see a "next ep. preview" on the movie even though we know that this is a trilogy.

This was an extremely ambitious movie, but just wasn't able to hit the mark. It's actually one of the best representations I've seen of a stream of consciousness anime, unfortunately is was incredibly hard to follow. This movie doesn't stand on its own; it requires the viewer to be intimately familiar with with the original anime to be able to follow what's going on. Renton as the narrator states many things as facts, but the movie doesn't have the time to show why they are facts. A fan of the original anime would already know those things to be true and can fill in the numerous gaps in Renton's story.

I feel the reason this movie had problems is because the creators loved the series too much. The people who made this are intimately involved with all aspects of the Eureka Seven Franchise. They knew the best parts of the story, and included those moments into this anime. They knew which parts were fluff and removed them. They focused on the key aspects of Renton's journey as a person and tried creative ways to present it. They were too clever by half and easily made one of the most complicated anime remakes for what was always an extremely straight forward anime.

First of all, the Summer of Love part was absolutely amazing and a love letter to all Eureka Seven fans.

After that comes the recap part. It certainly was weird that they chose to (incompletely) recap only the Ray/Charles arc and frankly, I was getting tired of it near the end, but when they rounded it up into Renton setting out to meet Eureka, I couldn't help but smile. Also, hearing Renton's inner thoughts throughout the whole thing certainly wasn't not-interesting.

What's up with the dogs being shot to death, though? Dewey? Dominic?

Anyways, apparently everything that happened til now is the same in this universe except Anemone being... a freakin' idol wut

Preview talk!
idol Anemone: hell yes
Pocket ga Niji Ippai The End: hell yes
new pink mecha: o....kay...?
soccer: ...episode 39 flashbacks...

Oh yeah, and the "Tsuzuku!" at the end of the preview made my heart warm up holy crap.

One more thing: Glory Days is almost as good as Escape.

EDIT: So apparently the thing with Ray and Charles already adopting Renton once before wasn't just an awkward translation error but something that actually happened in this universe? Well, that's...stupid...

I don't think these movies are retelling the original series, but rather a new story with reused images from the original. The movie literally cut off Renton's grandpa and sister from the story and implied that Charles and Rey were the adopted parents from the start of the story.

Movie Time Line:

First Summer of Love > Renton becomes an orphan > Charles and Rey adopts Renton > Renton runs away for bit > Renton joins Gekkostate crew > Renton runs away from Gekkostate > Renton reunites with Charles and Rey > Renton runs away again from Charles and Rey > Joins Gekkostate again for Eureka's stake.

I enjoyed it and liked the story. The only problem is that I didn't get how Eureka and Renton met, and how did that incident with her having to recover from that slimy thing. I guess I still need the series even though they said it was a reboot of the series.

But I will have to see the sequel, maybe it contains their back story. I'm interested now, the characters are watchable and plot isn't bad either. The Beams were my favorites they were such good people, but I guess Renton chose Eureka in the end.

ye if they had just done this in episodes or a movie it would have been fine.

I love the tv-show and AO but watching this is just a confusing mess (past the summer of love) especially to people who haven't seen either, even pocket full of rainbows had a more coherent story line than this.

Yeah, like Phaetons_Folly said in his/her post, the movie is written in a way that considers all viewers're old fans.

Anyway, for me I liked it, excluding the Ray and Charles early adoption of Renton and his Grandpa and Sister being deleted.

PS: It is strange only hearing the word Nirvash in the second half or the fact that Eureka scream It only one time. So different from the original séries.

PSS: oh god, my english is awful.

Oh man that order was a complete mess. I honestly don't see it adding anything of value by doing it that way. I hope the next movie won't.

Well that was quite dissapointing. Really liked Eureka 7 first time watching, was a bit happy to watch the "renewed" version, but that was so confusing. It has been a long time so don't remember much and with the backstory stuff i didn't know what was happening in the first 20 minutes at all. It started to click at some point, but it was rather weird to start like that. Obv it would be hard to put all the 51 episodes into 3 movies and you need to give some slack to the staff, but that was not how i was imagining it would be, the direction was complete mess, just separate segments were shoved into your face. The beginning and Gekko part were cut off, thought it was kinda weird to accentuate on the part with Beams, just standalone (with the time between movies) the movie idea feels different.
Really not a fan of this version, was very hard to follow what was happening and now don't really know if i want to watch at least 2nd movie. 6/10

It's really weird for me, I've been a huge fan of the series since it first aired and I knows more or less what they said originally in the scenes that they re-used almost word for word... so I was just confused while watching it. Not because of the flashback/flashfoward thing, but just because at some point I didn't feel like their expressions and the scenes really matched what they were saying now. I'm left with a really bitter feeling after watching this movie, I really hope that in the second one they won't be re-using that many scenes from the original and actually develop its own story, like they should've done with this one tbh.

A retelling of the original anime with a spin of the origin to eureka and Renton journey too each other, was extremely confusing with the back a fourth scenes of Renton narrating what was happening through the run after seeing it a seconded time I understand it more and like it more. Also the Summer of Love part was absolutely great moment the few scenes they redid was good wished they just remade all the scenes with the new animation also one of the best scenes was at, 1:21:50 time spent together in the inner plains. Soon after the last scenes of the ending credits trailer seeing Eureka flying to find the one she loves, wished they made it into the next film but sadly they did not.

I like how this movie expanded on Renton's inner conflict where he decides to either be in a place where he belongs (Ray & Beams, loving family) or a place where he longed to be (Gecko state, Inside Eureka). Unfortunately being an angsty rebellious teenager of 14 years old, his desires overcame his rational thinking and chose to be with the girl who gripped him by his heart.

That's it...

I've seen plenty of movies which retell the original show's story but altered to achieve an alternative storytelling whether that be a different course of actions taken by the characters or some other sort of newly added scenario. One would say that this movie should just be like any of the aforementioned types of movies, oh no no no, NOT AT ALL.

This movie sucks ass, like seriously. The animation and art style are really the only massively consistent and lovely aspects that this movie has. That orbital entry scene from the beginning was rad, but damn I can't even be bothered to finish this in one sitting. The way this movie conveys the story with two different perspectives in time doesn't help it at all, especially not with that goofy-ass "FORWARD, RECAP" type of bullshit. They must've thought it was so cool, well personally I would've liked that artistic touch had the movie not stunk.

Honestly, I would've liked this movie to go all in and have Renton made his mind up to be with Ray and Beams permanently. Would love to see the effect this decision would have on Eureka, Gecko state and the world. Though instead, they went onwards with his canonical decision albeit with slight differences.
