This has been bugging me since the start of the show. I love it to death and think it's a good show. Hell, I'll even call it great but what keeps it from being a 10 in my book is how poorly explained the gears are along with some shaky world building.

More importantly, how they have explained the gears so far or lack thereof. Besides what we were told about Yuri and owner's brother gear. We really don't know what these things do. What are their advantages? What makes each one different? How did they come to be?

What is even worse is that Nanbu(the coach) pointed out Joe had an advantage in his other fights due to being Gearless. He was able to react quicker than his oppoents. So that tells me, "Then what the fuck is the point of the gear?" Why isn't more fighters are gearless if it is such a HUGE advantage.? This really bothers me and I don't think the show will ever flush out this part of the story out.

With that said, this is still a very good show. I love it to death, but really think the writing staff dropped the ball here and just made cool looking robot arms for sake of it, or someone on staff at TMS likes Real Steel A LOT.

I assume the gears amplify the impact of the punches, hence why Joe coughs up blood every other match for dramatic effect. (Isn't that kind of the point?) So basically, the main character is prioritizing agility over strength, at least to my understanding.

Crying doesn't mean you're weak.
Enduring doesn't mean you're strong.

I imagine fighting gearless is the equivalent to trying to defeat Mike Tyson in Punch-Out.

There are many flaws with the show. Especially Joe, he has very little character development and he's just an archetypal anime badass who defeats people with the power of badassery and MCness.

That too. That is why it got a 9 in my book. I do think Joe does win his fights fair and square and it's not because of plot.
