sorcery said: Not awful, but globally unimpressed. Presentation is pretty listless as it's mostly about expotalk with panning over the scenes. As for the plot it works together, yet it's in a shoestring as it devours whatever potential characters could have in terms of depth. There's little chemistry to feel in their interactions, because the events are moving forward too quickly. Indeed, episode 2 sees the death of Tronco, Vanno's outburst at the party and the execution of his plan, all along. This looks so conveniently staged it breaks the immersion for me overall. Something as serious as a revenge gotta soak and be delayed all the more by exterior factors before the optimal conditions are met. That, to capture maximally the frustration of protagonists like Angelo or Vanno. And before you counter my point, I say no, time skips never count in the process of development. It must exist only to have plotline disregard irrelevant moments.
Talking about the contract on Fango's head, Vanno doesn't even offer basic support like learning to Angelo the basics of firearm wielding. He comes off as amateurish, even more so he's not even able to determine the reliability of a recruit after so much time in the mafia. That's lame as it makes his potentially moving relation with his slain friend worthless, reduced to the state of a plot device created for the benefit of Angelo.
The confrontation with Fango is easily the biggest highlight. I'd normally say an anime with a cast full of the likes of Fango is edgelord, but in this case he represents an added value coloring the show positively. In fact, he reminds me Nicholas Santoro in Scorsese's Casino: a batshit crazy character very short in temper, to the point it creates all sort of problems around him. I like to hate him. As for the others, due to the points I raised above, I hardly care, to be honest.

Fango is a great antagonist, the characterization is poorly exploited and plot staging is dull.
basically this.

the OP was unfitting in visuals but the song itself. i love TK/ling but a rock song didn't fit this show at all, especially since the ED threw me off. i would have just liked a different instrumental genre.
the episode wasn't that interesting until the gun scene with the crazy dude. angelo is the only interesting character but that's only because everyone else is so boring. the writers did a huge mistake of angelo leaving his "brother", although i'm sure he did it for his protection. he should have tagged along with angelo because we would understand their relationship and all. now i know corteo had a family so he couldn't have up and left them as a child, but i think the plot should have started with angelo arriving when his mother died. that way we understand how their relationship is because they had a year of running around doing who knows what together. but now corteo is simply a tails to angelo's sonic - a sidekick that can be ignored. a sidekick that demands attention and respect would probably be robin with batman.
another problem i have on the matter is angelo's slipping in and out of corteo's life. he runs off and tries to do an assassination with next to no help. and before people say "corteo hasn't killed before!!!" neither has angelo. and maybe corteo would be as prepared to kill like his friend if, as i said before, he was with him in the year his mother died. he would understand that anger and he would feel for his friend and help him in whatever means possible. i just hope he isn't as invisible as he is now and is used as some plot point for angelo.
i'm so confused tho??? who moved that dude's body lol? angelo's in a mess now. |
