The episode was good, but I just don't get many things that should be known to someone watching this.

I really should stop watching anything that Ufo makes.

Nice sakura scenery & Ryoma just having fun, while everyone else is super tense.
I hear Hijikata is important historically, but what's his huge suffering in the future about? Briefly saw wiki and he died how he wanted to, died in battle, loyally fighting as shinsengumi. What more can a samurai on the losing side wish for?

He wished for the Shinsengumi to survive, the Bakufu not be abolished, the era of Samurai to not end. And the way he died is painful you know, with a samurai, he wished to die in a sword fight not by a bullet. The Imperial army just abandoned the sword and proceeded to gun down the Bakufu army. Even if he knew that is a losing battle, it still brought him pain. Kondo Isami, the chief of Shinsengumi, who he was closed to, was executed like a criminal. Go and watch Drifters to understand that. I am certain he didn't die how he wanted to.

Thx for the info. Sucks how Hijikata died. I did watch Drifters, but he survived after the battle with Toyohisa as antagonist (in that anime's timeline). I didn't follow Kondo's history.

In Drifters, you cound see that Hijikata was bitter, resentful and full of hatred. He was betrayed by the country that he wanted to protect.
About Kondo, Hijikata and Kondo knew each other before the Shinsengumi was founded. They were as close as brothers. Hijikata often stayed at Kondo' dojo since he didn't have good relationship with his family. It was because of Kondo that the Shinsengumi was founded. Kondo was executed by the government without any honor, they didn't even give him the right to perform Seppuku like a proper samurai. This angered the other members of Shinsengumi including Hijikata. There are a lot of series that have the Shinsengumi like Peace maker Kurogane, Kaze Hikaru, Rurouni Kenshin, Hakuoki, ,... so you can look over them if you want to know more about the Shinsengumi.
