Being a fan of anime and marvel movies (not much into superhero comics though) I thought this was an interesting idea... and watching Castlevania somehow gave me more hope for this. But... after witnessing one punch man and boku no hero, this is REALLY underwhelming. A friend told me this was sort-of like an animated comic... so I thought of motion comics... Doesn't sound too bad, does it? But, judging only this episode, NOPE. A motion comic would be better.
- The explanation for the reflection should've been at the start or right before/after the opening. Perhaps a little boku no hero-y, but it would've helped to set this world apart from other superhero works. The pacing was suuuuper slow. The plot of the whole episode could've been done in half the time, there too many shots with characters just staring or "being there". If the art style is so simple that you can only communicate emotions through the eyes or dialog, maybe it's not the best idea to have long shots of a masked hero just staring.
- That opening scene was not the worst idea to start off, but the absolute lack of detail and obvious CG just screams flash (kinda reminds me of adult swim shows, but simpler). I don't mind CG if it's sufficiently detailed and fluid enough (basically if it justifies its use). It looks like they used bold outlines in the characters to try to hide the cg a bit. I kinda liked the simplistic character design (it wasn't that simple to me really, just the coloring). Those beams looked straight out of the powerpuff girls. On the other hand, the still cityscapes at the middle and end were much better. The fights... well, I only liked that fight with the x-masked guy and the bunch of villains.
- Whoever is in charge of the storyboards (or deciding the angles for the shots) needs some help. Some of the fight scenes looked just meh, but the action itself wasn't too bad. I'm surprised by the lack of one-liners as well, considering Stan Lee is involved.
-What's with all the American flags? ._. It's not like we're going to forget where they're fighting.
- I wasn't too interested in the characters themselves, but the teleporting girl seemed the most interesting to me and the x-masked guy had the most interesting power. And, seriously, I-Guy? -_-
I can't say American ideas being done in Asia have a good record, but after Kill Bill and The Animatrix I had some hope.
Probably going to try the 3-episode rule here...

The art style itself was nice but the way how everything is animated doesn't make the show good to look at unfortunately.

I do not think you have seen more recent cartoons like Young Justice, Steven Universe, Gravity falls and even the new Teenage Mutent Ninja Turtles.

Yes animation is a bigger deal in japan. But its production value is no longer that big a difference anymore. The one major divergence is still location of origin and with shows like Space Dandy that is also slowly disappearing. The western world may not appreciate animation as much yet. But It is getting there. And what we have is pretty on par with your avarige anime.

Def agree. See, this is what I meant when I said I would much rather refer to Western animation for superhero series (but of course everyone was quick to jump me for 'divining' western and japanese animation). There have def been some quality stuff in recent years. Young Justice is amazing.

Has anyone seen the new Voltron (Legendary Defender)? That is epic af.

Personally I think One Punch Man and My hero Academia are actually better shows than Young justice.
But With Young Justice returning for season 3 that may still change.

More people judging an entire show from one episode. Typical MAL.

like i understand the first ep. felt slow and maybe kinda boring, but giving it 2 or 3 more episodes wont hurt anyone. ofc you are free to drop it, but most of the people on here are so fast to call a series either AOTS or Flop after only 1 episodes, its incredible.

I think that the art style is indeed pretty simple but that's kind of the point here given the theme and especially considering who the creator is......Back in the day, we never had the amazing art styles in comics that we have today and the ones in this show screams and really pays homage to how comics looked in the 60's, 70's and 80's etc

Yeah, the show actually looks similar to that Spiderman cartoon from the 60's

Wow, a lot of jaded people here whining about the animation. I was about to turn away from it too but then I decided "what the hell" and was rewarded with a weirdly interesting idea. I'm personally going to give it another couple episodes to see what's going on. Most likely just another super hero story but who knows...

Also, people hating on Stan Lee need to do a little research and give him a nice little thank you for being one of the masterminds behind the entire super hero genre. Do you think we'd have the same caliber of shows today if it wasn't for him?

Whe didn't got much from the plot but the animation (except for the fight scenes where it could've been more fluid) and the music where very good!
It seems that the characters would be likable and their designs are pretty awesome.

Overall: 8/10

Ppl mistake "different animation style" with "bad animation".. Just because it isn't some godly, high detailed top-tier animation, they say it is bad. Well, this will never change, no reason to arg with narrow minded.
Very nice show, nice direction too. Want to watch the next episode already to see what the plot will turn out.

is it me or does every single character design look stolen; Sky Show (Sky High from Tiger x Bunny), the ninja with the x helmet (Robin from teen titans), fire dude (many other engulfed in flames heros) , the bat dude sky high was fighting ( manbat, maybe even some spiderman villans), and etc.
Bro stealing is basically copy pasting. You can be inspired by them. And even if they are is it that bad?

Not a fan of the specific comic book artstyle this show has, it's too bland looking. The Disney XD Antman shorts have a way better looking comic book artstyle. The animation for this anime was kind of stiff as well. The character designs for the main heroes were pretty good though their superhero names kind of suck. I mean seriously IGuy? The villains weren't interesting or impressive at all except for the female villain who had her mouth covered. Didn't really like this first episode, I hope the show improves later on.

I don't see how this ruins anime in any shape or form. And how is this an insult to anime mate when it insults itself with shit like "eromanga-sensei" and "hundred" and most animes every season isn't worth spending time on. This show doesn't insult anything it's no masterpiece they've yet to show good stuff that'll hook ppl but don't fucking blame stand lee for this.

I mean there's a difference between a typically average harem and a pretty enjoyable comedy, to a pretty lackluster hero/action show that has atrocious pacing, I think Moodie hates it because this pretty much feels souless as hell, not only souless but it doesn't feel like its made with actual passion either.

This is probably what he meant when he sees this as an insult because this devalues in a way that the staff has to dumb down everything for the sake of it fitting with the actual work and it doesn't work either because from the inconsistent animation, towards the atrocious pacing. It isn't an insult to the anime industry, at least in my opinion. But this is probably the worst premiere of the season, and even stuff like Isekai Smartphone which is something people are trashing on about has more of a personal interest to me because at least I can enjoy that.
Mate. Not all premieres are gonna be good. I recommend go bashing on "misty cronexia's" anime instead it's way more of an insult than this. And the pacing is a mix of japnese and american. Which fucked with ppl's brains a little I see where why ppl dislike It. But I won't have it when ppl decide to insult ppl who helped bring so much greatness to the superhero genre. It's what inspired most popular anime till this day. You can go ahead and shit on it if it's pacing continues this way. Because that's no way to run a show. But I cut it some slack cause i'm used to watching both anime and american series. And their way of introducing is very inique.

Decent director, decent writer, decent studio — why the result feels like art college graduation project?

Did they want to make it feel like 70s cheap comic book? When art is easy enough for one person to draw and plot is full of holes? Congratulations then, they did it. It feels like 70s cheap comic book. Authentic. And pointless. So many things were improved since animation came to be. Many years passed. And here we are. Watching cheap comic book in 1080p. Degraded to roots.

I have mixed feelings about episode 1, but before I say anything, I'd like to talk about Stan Lee. His influence is definitely present. The story seems to be along the lines of his X-Men, and I surmise that many of the super powers, hero designs, and also probably American city depictions.

Now for episode 1. I like the direction the story seems to be headed in, though the first episode doesn't make it quite clear where it will end up at. I'm also a fan of the art design, as I feel it to be a unique blend of anime and comic styles, and the character designs benefit from this. Also, the music so far is amazing and catchy. However the elephant in the room is the animation quality. Many of the scenes feel poorly done. The fight scenes also seem to be kind of awkward, but that might just take some getting used to because it's so different. Despite the animation being extremely rough, one seen gave me hope for it. Watching the big screens in Time Square all change into the space image looked extremely cool and smooth. At the end of the day, it's going to take more than one episode for me to decide my opinions on the series.

Most anime is already very influenced by western ideologies.

You forgot to mention how the art, sound, music, quality, character design, story, plot, and everything else are better.

How is The Legend of Korra worse in anything than Boku no Pico?

The tendency for anime to be better (That is discussable) is not intrinsically why it's called anime: There is a lot of awful anime which can't win on any of that.

That said, I didn't like the episode a lot. Somehow I managed to like the rough drawings, but I'm not fond of superhero anime.

Not as bad as I expected from the initial ratings. I don't mind the animation as I'm a big fan of Archer and this wasn't radically different.

Nice soundtrack, serviceable story and I think the concept has legs. Daring to be unique is something massively needed in an industry where so much of the seasonal stuff is so formulaic and derivative.

I'm sticking with it.

I kinda wondering, what the people behind this anime thinking when making it?
Are they want to make "American style animation" with this anime? Because it's far from that.
And what with the American flag all over the place? Did the director want to play semiotics or something?
Don't like it? Just stop watching/reading it. Why become a masochist that keep going through something you don't like and bitching in the end of it?

I'll give it at least the 3 episode courtesy before deciding if it's a hidden gem or a massive flop, but after waiting so long that first episode left me disappointed. I can appreciate the minimalist art style but the animation itself was choppy and slow, I had no context for what was happening until near the end which at least teased an actual plot. Hopefully this turns around and is just one of those "the first episode or two is bad but it gets way better" titles.

This anime is a pleb filter, like Ninja Slayer was back in 2015.

It's like people only like animu designs and animation full of flashy CG special effects.

With that said, if the framerate was higher this would have been much better. Watch the fights at 2x speed.

is this what they call style over substance?

that's not inherently bad, sometimes a show's style can take it to the next level. But this, this is just, ugggghhhhh.

how do you make a show about superheroes slow and boring.
And yes, I meant that.

What's with the really low score. We've barely seen anythig from this. Yeah, it's different but that's why I like it. The world of anime is full of stuff that's pretty much the same. Rarely something tries to break away from the formula, but when it does, most of the time it gets shit on into oblivion because people it seems aren't used to more avant-garde stuff compred to the usual stuff they watch. My only disappointment with this is that I didn't expect the animation to be this stiff.

I have read a lot of negative comments about this series, which are based solely on the visual aspect. Considering that the director is Hiroshi Nagahama, who was involved in unconventional but equally good projects like "DMC - Detroit Metal City", "Aku no Hana" and "Mushishi", I would think twice before qualifying the work as a failure or waste of time.

Please do not judge ahead of time. Remember the underdog "Kemono Friends", which received attention (and praise), when already its plot went more than half.
Go up, go down, go, come, take, bring, jump, scream, run.

Holy s*** was this episode horribly paced. Every other shot was 3 three seconds too long. The episode was also lacking in a sound in some scenes. Which only made enhanced my first complaint.
In terms of characters we know next to nothing about them. There was no reason to care about any of the fights that was happening.
The art style is neat but really it's horribly paced and the animation is pretty stiff at times. So far there is no reason to watch this show.

I feel so conflicted about this anime. The style was interesting, taking on the comic-book style or w/e. Not sure if the lack of shading was on purpose, but the monotones was somewhat pleasing to the eyes. Character designs were cool too. I-Guy looked like a Transformer/Gundam mix. X-On was a pretty sleek design and his power is cool.

But the animation was just so fucking slow. Like aarrgghh. I had faster animations back when MapleStory animations were a thing. Let alone that pacing. Erk. There was hardly any dialogue as well, let alone any sounds at some points.

I want to try to watch it some more, but I feel like it'd just put me to sleep.
