Why exactly do people not like this show? At the moment it's already reaching the 5.99 mark. Is it because it's about kabuki?

Personally I didn't have much expectation from this because the first ep was basically a club member recruiting ep. Ep 2 showed that mc wasn't as seemingly uninformed about kabuki as in Ep1, but my expectation still hasn't improved much.

Probably the initial wave of bad scores (and drops) this earned were from some of the people that expected another Rakugo.

After episode 2 it's probably the pacing and some other bullshit reasons like it being fujoshit etc. because notice that stuff like Sin Nanatsu no Boobs, moeblob shits, and Clockwork no Budget loli cliches are scored higher.

You can't expect another rakugo. Since 1 this is a club anime

This anime being about Kabuki is not the real problem. I just find the cast to be overall uninteresting.
MC is the male version of the typical genki leaders of girls' music groups, which that in itself is not that bad, but after two episodes of him going around forcing people to join his club is starting to get annoying to watch. His friend (Tombo?) is there just for the sake of having someone supporting him; he hardly says or does anything, he apparently takes punches to his face without a second thought if ordered to. Hana is probably this anime's only saving grace so far. The crossdressing girl and the kabuki dude are too early to judge.
The pacing is very slow too, which doesn't help.

I kinda disagree with the pacing is slow. Cause for most "start a club anime" we won't be able to see all the member until the half way mark but for this we get introduce to all of the member in the 1st episode so we don't need to waste time finding members and just get right into the kabuki performances in the episode 3-4 mark

I agree, I am trying to stick with it and hope it picks up soon. I realizes it will take a bit to get the group set up, But Boy! the MC is starting to get on my nerves a little.

It's only 2 episodes in, so i can't say with confidence if it's underrated or not just yet. It is a little slow to start, but some anime is like that and you either ending up loving it or hating it. I am willing to give it a go and see if it picks up. Other replies have already said that some people may have expected something like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. From the art work alone you can tell that is not the case, and it's the tale of a modern day high school student trying to start up a Kabuki club.

It is still a little slow. But a least it is building a basic knowledge of Kabuki for the viewer. Maybe Kuro should add a little of this into his Kabuki Club fliers. v

I had forgotten about this album, probably as it wasn't one of my favourites. I remember Kabuki Danshi wasn't to bad, how i loved Miyavi. I used to drive everyone crazy by having Kimi Ni Negi Wo, Senor Senora Senorita, Itoshii Hito e and I love you I love you and I hate you on repeat for months. Ahh, those were the days of Miyavi, Versailles, Muse, Malice Mizer and Apocalyptica. Guitar riffs, piano, operatic splendour and visual kei rock/metal still makes my heart flutter.

So far it is a pretty good show. Better than I had expected. The main boy looks young/annoying - but his behavior so far was okay. The other chars are interesting. No forced drama (the strict/traditional families were mentioned but we saw the 1 father was very nice guy and not strict).

In episode 3 the cosplay costume making girl was introduced. Interesting personality. Not only does she look cute - her personality is nice (and a bit cute) as well - totally different from what I expected. (And the voice ha ah. I thought she would be more "cute" regarding voice and personality. But what I got to see ... I liked that better.)

I'd say between 6.8 and 7.2 should be an okay score for the show at the end. Yeah 7.5 and higher would be too high but 6.0 (lower 6.5) is definitely toooo low.

I mean there are tons of other school + club anime that aren't as good as this. (Not that good with the chars/combination of characters.)

I guess the main that looks like a middle school boy scared a lot of people away (even I thought he'd start getting annoying but he was okay so far).

That's because many people were expecting this to be one thing and they got another one. There aren't many animes about kabuki which made people interested in this, but then, after watching the first episodes, they realized this is just another typical club anime with another typical main character... I think that's the main reason why the ratings are so low, even though the anime is not that bad. But I'm expecting to see higher ratings towards the end of the show, because this type of anime, taking into consideration many other animes rated here on mal, would have a score of around 7, probably. Perhaps a little less, but around there...

Much like gay pubs.

Personally I find kabuki grating and obnoxious and the show itself is just boring. There are no challenges for the club to overcome (like the regional tournaments for sports clubs), and it's not the setting for a drama nor an excuse for a slice of life or comedy show. It feels like a publicly funded educational show designed to teach kids about kabuki.

There aren't any challenges yet since we are only in episode 3...
But there is a conflict between Kurogo and Ebihara so... that's something.
Well... is only a school but with no other genre. Take seiren from last season

After the first episode, I wasn't sure I wanted to keep watching it, but it's gotten much better (still not amazing, but entertaining) since then.

I'm guessing other people gave up or failed to see the art and figure out the nature of the anime (not the next Showa given character ages/designs and setting, a bishonen filled cast = probably some fujoshi bait, a school/club type anime).

Seriously about the artwork, there were some people who watched Yuri on Ice and were pissed it wasn't about female ice skaters. If they'd bothered to just look once at the art, they would've figured it out. There's probably some of that here too.

many of the low score on mal tend to be unwaranted.
Sometimes it makes sense, but suddenly we have a good series thst get scored low just bwcause pwople didnt like it or just didnt find itneresting. Yes, people do thst and without remorse.

Instead on giving a fair score based on what it is regardless of how much or jow littlw you care about the theme presented.

I personally wont watch it because im just not interested in kabuki. But i will also not plummet the score just because i sont deem it interesting.

*Tumbleweed rolls across the barren thread*

Am i the only one still watching this anime. Lol, maybe i have weirder taste than i had previously thought.
Up to episode 6 now. I was enjoying the story, the growth of the characters, learning the history of Kabuki and intrigued by how Kurusu is going to make Kabuki accessible and fun for a younger audience so used to more modern forms of visual entertainment.
The only thing that does annoy me is that insidious intrusion that has become all to familiar, the random needless violence by female characters towards their male counterparts. I mean, why! It adds nothing to the story as far as i can see, and i must lack a bigger funny bone than others as i also fail to see the humour in these scenes. I thought at least Kabukibu would be one of those anime to be free of this kind of so called comedy moments, but obviously not. Maybe the writers thought that it would make this anime more relatable and fun to watch for the viewing public.

No, I'm still watching it as well. To be honest, we're really enjoying. I like slice of life anime with good characters, and this one has likable characters with potentially interesting stories to explore, and I've always had in interest in Kabuki. As a combination it is working well.

I agree with you regarding the sudden intrusion of violence. I'm hoping it is used to create something better than an ugly bit of comedy, but it was out of place.

I am watching it too.I am liking how its going. And I totally agree with the violence part.

For the people who complain it is slow paced try looking at it as a slice of life anime. Maybe that will help.

I personally don't think of this anime as a sports anime. Coz for me sports anime are ' high paced, super exciting with a "Lets win this!!!" attitude and summer camps full of "hellish training" and sweat and youth and friendship growing stronger'. This anime has a more cooled down tone. But its interesting.

(On a side note I think there are a lot of gayphobics around the internet. Almost every comments section of every anime with a majority male cast gets an earful of comments from this gayphobic or gayhating community.)

I never saw a BL tag to Kabukibu. Did i miss one. There are many anime that i think should have a higher rating. But i don't see the need to go to threads and slag off an anime that others appear to enjoy. I thought MAL was for a folk who love and enjoy all anime and are tolerant of others anime preferences. Obviously and unfortunately, you are not of that calibre.

Thank god for that. I was worried i was in a minority of one, lol. I also hope the violence is leading somewhere, but i have a bad feeling it won't. I enjoy anime that introduces me to the cultural history of a country. I loved Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu for that very reason, and because it was an exquisite story. A friend on mal recommended an anime about Yosakoi dancing, that i quite enjoyed. One of my favourite actors Taichi Saotome who is starring along side Ken'ichi Matsuyama (another favourite actor of mine) in Futagashira is also Japan's number one Onnagata. He has been in quite a few live action versions of anime such as Crows Zero. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations you may have for cultural arts related anime. :)

I am so pleased to hear that others are enjoying this anime. Some stories need a slow pace to give depth not only to the characters, but to the story line as well. I think i expect to much from others regarding the unintelligent homophobic replies etc. I stupidly presume that everyone can be at least tolerant of others taste in anime, manga etc. It is almost as if any anime that doesn't provide panty shoots, breasts (ridiculously sized i may add. BUY a decent bra woman!) shower scenes, suggestive poses in underwear of sometimes alarmingly young females and not to do with sports or what may be considered Testosterone driven plots, then it is to be ridiculed. God, i'm ranting again. Lol, i never learn.
Glad to have yapped with a fellow Kabukibu fan. Sorry for the rant. :)

I know almost nothing about kabuki, but this show has made me slightly interested in it. It's not a bad anime, there's a lot worse stuff airing this season, and it's unfair how low the score is. I actually wish this anime had 24 episodes :D I don't really like Kurusu, but the other characters are fun to watch. Still waiting for Shiroganeya to make some friends and start enjoying life... Guess I have to read manga after the anime ends.

-Interesting characters
In kabukibu the characters action are more likable and relatable than sukasuka. Take the lastest episode, where Akutsu want to quit the kabukibu club due to his mother seeing other guy and is dating him.
Then Kurogo has to be the best male character of the season if Glenn from akashic record doesn't exists. He started a club just by his own free spirits and will along side Tonbo. His fall in episode 3 or 4 is from stage fright and he has medical issue when he was ask to perform the 3 thieves. He was scared and we all can relate to that because of stage fright.

Now for sukasuka, sukasuka have to be the most force anime I have seen for this season. Nothing flows well and the constant force to make us cry is just obvious.
I though Willem would make an interesting MC but nope his just as boring as a brick wall.

I personally find it cute and entertaining. It's really not an amazing series, but it's not bad, it's quite good to kill time. If there's something bothering me it's the character designs, I just don't like how most of the characters look. (which is sad considering one of the reasons I got interested in this was CLAMP)

Also, "it's bad because it's gay", lolwut? If anything it's not gay enough.

All I can see in Kabukibu are annoying characters :/ Like, Akatsu better grow the hell up! It's not like his mother is going anywhere. Ebihara playing hard to get and feeling so superior. The only thing I like is it's manservice XD

As for SukaSuka, Yeah i feel like the romance is forced. But the substance of the story is much better than Kibukibu.

I marathoned both seasons of this earlier this week and loved it. I found Kuro a bit hard to take at times and wonder at his depths of empathy for the other characters. I had avoided the show for fear it would have no female characters, but instead it has a nice mixed-gender cast. My favorite is probably Kaoru; I smiled at the hinted romance between her and Tonbo.

I thought this show was very well-crafted for its purposes, introducing Kabuki to adolescents. I doubt I'll ever become an aficionado of the art form, but Kabukibu was an entertaining introduction.

Woefully underrated. I'd give it an 8.5. Anyone who watched Chihayafuru should give Kabukibu a try.

It's cause the characters are cookie cut outs and have no charisma. They dispense dialogue and have one meaningful trait. You can't possibly tell me the relationships or characters here had any life breathed into them, they're flat.
