| Love triangle, the most annoying and pointless cliché... and of course Iris Zero manages to somehow make it good. As in, it leads to progress that otherwise wouldn't have happened, it makes sense and it doesn't just serve as an excuse for the characters to cry and walk around depressed and oh, look how dramatic this situation is, look how tragic, boo-hoo. I also fully expect a happy ending for both girls, because Iris Zero might be a manga about bullying, death and broken hearts, but it's a happy manga about bullying, death and broken hearts. It's hard, but the endings always makes you feel good. It's good to finally see the reason behind Tooru's hesitant attitude addressed directly. Even better to see him openly acknowledge the group as his friends (in front of Sasamori at least) and express a desire to change for the better. It's really an interesting relationship these two have now. Usually the not-yet-couples in romance stories would either be one-sided crushes or mutual crushes that neither party knows are mutual. This time around, both of them know they like each other, but there is an "inner" reason to not dive into dating just yet, and it's a surprisingly reasonable reason, one that directly ties into the protagonist's character and past. This makes the progress of the relationship directly tied to the progress of his character and his inner conflict. It's a romance that doesn't work on the principle of "we'll be happy if we get together", but argues that "when I'm happy, I want to be happy with you". Dating isn't the end goal just because these two people are co-dependent and need each other to be happy (shallow!) - it's a result of getting to the goal, it's the reward. Iris Zero is so gooooood!! |
