Well, I think we all agree this show won't ever be Yaoi (meaning: showing actual sex between two male characters). But a lot of viewers seem to think it might become shounen-ai. To be shounen-ai there has to be some kind of romantic tone. ROMANTIC. And this is definitely not the case so far. Let them confess. Hold hands. An innocent kiss. You know the shounen-ai tropes. At this point it just isn't enough.

Small correction. There doesn't have to be sex for it to be yaoi. Yaoi aka BL can be PG.

But then it would be shounen-ai ;)

It is neccessary to differentiate here. Yaoi ≠ Shounen-ai. But I think my point was understandable. I could only see this show to become shounen-ai. And even this is kinda unlikely at this point.

Well there may have been a dip in animation for skating, but atleast Minami's performance was pretty decent and had a few fluid moments.

Viktor and Yuri are so in love though it's ridiculous. I'm loving watching their relationship flourish; they have great chemistry with one another. Want an actual confirmation or something though! I guess Yuri saying Viktor coming into his life caused him to experience some type of feeling he calls "love" is good enough though.

You're wrong. Shounen ai is a western term and it is not used in Japan except to refer to "little boy love" which refers to someone being attracted to younger boys. All yaoi is referred to as BL or Boys Love in Japan. It does not need to have sex or anything for it to considered yaoi.

I think you mean 'shotacon' and not 'shounen-ai' here. I concurr that the term BL is used in Japan without much differentiation. And yet, the terms have different nuances.
And yes, the Japanese and Western nomenclatures aren't always identical.

But let's drop this off-topic about BL sub genres. As I said before YoI is neither yaoi nor shounen-ai nor shotacon (lol). So this discussion doesn't seem to really belong here.

This episode was better, animation is still wonky AF but at least the episode was alot more interesting and entertaining then the previous. I enjoyed the dynamic between the red head and Yuri. I think the show should have kept Russian Yuri in Japan. It would have made for a more interesting show. Oh well.

About this episode:
I was so freaking excited, Yuri was with a such bad boy style, But I didn't like the way Yuri was threathing Minami In the begining :/ He was so mean, but I understand that he was nervous and didn't wanted to lost...
So f**** amazing his coreograph, I liked Minami apresentation, but YURI WAS SO FABULOUS
He made some wrong jumps but he didn't stop, even when he hit on the wall...
But in that confession I was melting, he said everyhting in he's way, being so cute with his "abstract love" and calling in certain way that Victor was the man who shows love to him <3
I like Pichit but Yuri needs to win ^_^

As much as I absolutely adore this show, I was dying of second hand embarrassment throughout this whole episode. All I thought at the end was "well, of course you don't remember your performance. You have a head injury!"

I'm also concerned about Yuri going against his old rinkmate... I don't want this to be a "we gave it all we had, and did our best even though it wasn't enough" anime. I want Yuri and Victor to live happily ever after and I want Yuri to win it all in his last competition...

Hahaha, Minami was acting like a professional fanboy! Since I was watching it in the middle of the night I had to force myself not to burst into laughter when he asked for an autograph xD

Awwww, Yuri was great, I'm so happy all the effort he put into trainings paid off finally! Also, I'm not an expert, but wouldn't hitting his head like that cause him at least some pain? I mean, I know ice skaters must be tough and all, but it looked soooo painful and he was so lively after finishing his performance (jumping on Victor etc) x.x

I think you're too hung up on arbitrary genre definitions. Not all anime that features romance is in the "romance" genre, and the romance genre doesn't distinguish between shows where the characters actually have sex. Nagisa getting pregnant in Clannad doesn't suddenly make the show a different genre.

So why is it when same gender romance is concerned it has to all be shoved into specific and poorly defined categories?

Personally, I would like to see the relationship be explicitly romantic by the end of the series. I don't particularly care which genre you think that makes it, because that has no bearing on the actual content of the show itself. I'm still not sure they will, but I don't understand the need to be overly pessimistic about it. If they do that's great, if they don't oh well. There's no reason to keep harping on about it being "fujo bait" after every episode, just let people have their fun until we know for certain.

This is what I've been thinking for a while, but I've never been good at explaining my thoughts. Completely agree.

Well that's what the blu-rays are for, hopefully.

Anyway, great episode outside of some cases of giraffe-neck in the art which kind of took me away from the immersion a little. Goes to show that art and animation go a long way in anime storytelling so those that say story>>>>art/animation can suck it. Like the other people here, loved how more confident Yuri has gotten. Really look forward to next week's ep!

Well that depends on your definition then.

No I do not. Shounen ai refers to the boys love as in affection towards young boys. It's in the word itself. Shounen = young boys. Shounen anime is aimed at young boys. Shounen means young boy. It's referred to as Yaoi/BL and if it's explicit then it gets marked with an 18+ label. If you do not wish to make this a matter of discussion though then maybe you should not comment making declarative statements about what something is when you use the improper terms.

Well, I'm not sure what to think about this episode. Is it queer baiting or they are actually serious?

I remember when Viktor suggested Yuri to think about something like a lover, when he skates, and now he thinks about Viktor. It just seems Yuri's romantic life or rather maturity to have a relationship is playing as part of his growing up arc as a skater. To be confident with himself and his sexual awareness.

Helenus said:
I wouldn't say Yuri 'came out' on live TV. You should listen to the phrase in question again. Episode 5 essentially sealed the deal. No romantic feelings towards Victor.

No, actually it's the opposite of that. He said it's not a feeling as straightforward as 恋 (koi is a mere fling and infatuation, like the thing he had with his childhood friend). He doesn't know how to call it, so he assumes is 愛. Ai can be romantic, you know, it's basically true love deal. You don't marry someone you don't love (as in 愛). Considering that he singled him out from families and friends, whatever he feels toward Viktor is special and he has never felt it before. Not with his family or anyone in his life.

What he had Yuuko was just a crush. What he has with Viktor is love. You can't deny it doesn't have a sexual or romantic innuendo with his and Viktor's behavior. This show, IMO, is about Yuri's embracing a sexual and more confident side of him in love to grow as a skater. And the object of his affection is Viktor. That's why he thinks about him as the target of his performance, or when he skates. This is all tied up to Viktor suggesting to think about a lover when he skates. There has been a huge emphasis in the past episodes that he fails despite being talented because he sucks in relationships and never had a lover. Skating as he does is all about embracing inner sensuality. He can't perform 100% until he figures himself out. This doesn't mean he and Viktor will hook up, but the theme of his growing up arc does seem to involve his sexual awakening of sorts.

Of course, he's not yet over in development, IMO, so if he'll admit his attraction and feelings or become self-aware of them it would be in the ending. Again, it doesn't mean it's going to end with them as a couple, it seems it's used as a device to make Yuri grow.

Anytime. The difference between 恋 and 愛 isn't that one is romantic and the other isn't, is that 恋 is an immature form of 愛. So a crush and passionate feeling rather than a steady and forever feeling. You can feel 愛 for your spouse and life-partner while 恋 to your night stand or boyfriend/girlfriend. Ai is eternal while Koi doesn't last. Sure, koi is always sexual/romantic, but ai is rarely used in anime outside of romance (or in real life) because it's awkward. At most you describe it to parents to kids, but still it's weird. No wonder he got so many funny glances from the press. It's extremely weird in Japan.

Well, I think this is aiming beyond romance, it's more tied to Yuri's coming of age story that he must experience these feelings in order to be a good skater. Since they made a huge emphasis that he was lacking a love life to be decent, it would feel completely out of place he resolves "Oh no, Viktor is just my super platonic bro even if I had those in life and I already said I never felt anything like this before." If it makes sense. I don't really ship them or anyone in the show, I'm mostly concerned if Yuri's character development will be compromised by the outcome.

Well, from my personnal experience, my japanese boyfriends used "aishiteru" sometimes, "suki" more often. I don't think I was their life partner! If that were the case, I'd already be married to several men!
But it's true I often heard from japanese women that a man use "aishiteru" only one time in his life... it's probbly an urban legend!
I never heard "koi" alone, only in "koibito" but, from my experience, it's mostly "kareshi" "kanojyo" who is ueds... that's why I feels different when Victor use only "koibito" when asking Yuuri about his love life and speking about his.
It's probably different from families/education but also from places. In Kyuushuu they are more straight than in Tokyo, they say what they are thinking.

In Yuri on Ice is "Love can transcend everything"
I really want to them to be an "official" couple (no need to kiss or more) because most of the time love stories in anime are plain/stupid so a cute love story in a background of a great sports series would be so good, just one time! But their relationship already went futher than I would never have dream.
Well, I'm pretty agree with you even if I think you have a very complicated way to watch and anime ^^

I didn't think it was possible for this show to become even more gay and yet here we are. Tbh I teared up watching Yuri's performance to 'Yuri on Ice' and reminiscencing the progress of his and Viktor's relationship. And his speech about love... their relationship is just purely beautiful, if the showmakers end up brushing it off as platonic it's going to be a huge loss.
