Mafuyu failed as a sempai but it was nice to see her try and the girls didn't seem to mind.
Her acting like a onee-san was nice as well.

Poor Senpai not feeling very useful.
I wonder what the penguin has in mind.

you typed the words right out of my mouth that's right you typed the exact words I was probably going to say. now I'm sad because I want more kirino mosaic. daiya-chan even looks like she belongs in kirino mosaic. have to admit I laughed when daiya showed mafuyu just how smart she really is, never underestimate the intelligence of kids these days.

I think they screwed up there. Even if she had been in first grade, nine years would bump her into tenth grade, which is high school. If she's only a few years younger than Yuzuka and Chiya, she'd might even be post-high school. Since she seems to speak Japanese fine, it'd make sense for her to be tutored in Japanese to learn to write it before high school/college, but she appears to be going to elementary school. (Largely based on the fact she doesn't wear a school uniform and wears a randoseru backpack.) As smart as a nine year jump implies, I'm sure she could easily learn to write Japanese to post-high school level in a year. She wouldn't be able to get that advanced going to elementary school, as she'd be stuck at the current grade level lessons.

I love the show and enjoyed this episode, but someone didn't think that dialogue through very well.

I couldn't have guessed that I would have kanji classes, "rubber pencil illusion" introduction and "theory of biological evolution" review also included, in only 4 minutes. That's what I call a pretty informative episode!

Well, Japanese kids are taught kana and kanji (Japanese writing systems) from Elementary School; since Daiya/Dia (the blonde girl, which often implies that she has a foreign parent) ask for help to write in Japanese, that means it's something she really has trouble with. The blonde girl was probably at High School in the U.S., but when she went back to Japan (supposing that she learned how to speak Japanese before with her family, but didn't learn how to write), she had to go to elementary school, where kids learn how to read and write kana. She misspells ใ•ใ‘ writing ใกใ‘ and also can't agree with the writing of ้ฎญ (fish[้ญš]+2earth[ๅœŸ]), which cloud represent "amphibians" ("fishes who evolved to live on earth") instead of "salmon" or other fishes. So, her advanced logic gets on the way of learning the basics of writing old Chinese Japanese, someone can't simply be good at everything.

Moral of the story: if you take things too seriously, they get even more complicated; either if it's learning kanji or understanding an anime episode aimed at Japanese audience.

I know that, but the thing is, you wouldn't put a student back in elementary school when all they need to do is learn one subject, even if that subject is language. There'd be tutoring, special classes, maybe spend a year just learning the language before resuming normal studies, but they wouldn't stick them in elementary school. It would be disruptive to the normal students, and can also cause problems for the student needing to learn the language. (She's not going to be able to relate to the other kids, and them to her, so inevitably she'd get picked on and be isolated. It'd be a total disaster for everyone.)

Not to mention that with her being a child prodigy she'd learn kanji at a significantly faster pace than normal students. You'd have to keep moving her from grade to grade all through the school year, causing even more chaos for the entire school. And this applies to Japanese schools even more than English ones really, since kanji progression is built in by grade level. It's significantly easier to let English students get ahead on vocabulary (since it's just extra words, not basically expanding the alphabet) than it would be in Japanese learning to read/write kanji.

I'm not taking it too seriously, it just bugs me that it's so wrong. I guess it's because I was a education major at one point in time, so I know how this stuff works. (Ended up with a degree in computer science though.) Also, Daiya's an anime original character, so this isn't from the manga. Now it's not really important in the scheme of things, the show's still very enjoyable. But I do think they didn't think it through and messed up on it.

So, she is a filler character... That explains everything.
Well, if everything wasn't just for the sake of English-speaking-genius-joke, maybe there's another joke which could be one of those: kanji is so hard that don't even genius can learn; kanji are so illogical that genius simply cannot understand; the only thing she's bad at is writing in Japanese.
It's a comedy show after all, we can't take it "seriously", because it's meant to be wrong.

Those two birds got owned by Daiya. Here they are expecting her to be all "dumb" and she pulls the theory of evolution and then talks in English lol.

9 years skipped. Oh boy, that's a lot. She's basically finishing high school at such a young age. Her apperance makes her look like early teens around 13-14 maybe even 12.

The girls were studying together. Easily the best episode yet. That Engrish was adorable and it made me to miss Kiniro Mosaic. I want that show back. :(
