This is one of my favorite episodes since I can remember. I'm bawling my eyes out jeez. In fact I want to talk about every single moment of this frantic episode but that's just not realistic, so I'll try and break it down into the few key moments that moved me so much.
Firstly, I just want to say, this frantic chaos is what I wanted out of the Impel Down escape. To be constantly moving with little down time except for the moments that are crucial to the characters, those can have more focus. This episode was chaotic and constantly moving and it slowed down for those crucial moments perfectly. This is chaos at its best.
Next, the death of Oars was powerful. The way he reached for Ace and nearly got to him before we saw his hand fall indicating his death was so well done. It was a tonal change in the battle field. It was the first major and known face that fell. Someone everyone cared about was dead in such a brutal way as his killer gloated about it. It was that moment I feel this went from frantic to tragic and serious. Ace's tears and the shock of his comrades were good but the thing I loved most was Whitebeard's reaction. He knew this was going to happen and he tried his best to stop it by giving Oars cover. But it wasn't enough. So in a moment of tragedy and anger to have a vice admiral giant sneak up on him was perfect, the absolute rage in the shattering of his helmet and axe while tossing him away like he was garbage showed the love he has for his people and how this hurt him. But, like any good leader, after a somber moment of respect he won't let that death go in vain and he commands to use what Oars opened for them and climb his body! It was a game changer and when thinking about how we would feel if Dorry or Broggy or those giants that helped Usopp did this for him, it makes me feel for the people who knew Oars well.
Doflamingo had some wonderfully sick moments too. He is loving this chaos and reveling in it. He showed he could cut off a giants leg but instead of physically fighting his foes he chose to force them to slaughter each other. It was disgusting. He showed that he is quite amoral believing that in the end might makes right, the winner is the just one. It's an argument you hear quite a lot and it's pretty decent, history is written by the winners so they say. And despite how prevalent this argument is, this is probably my favorite telling of it.
- "Pirates are evil and the Navy are justice has been rewritten in the past many times, values are different to people who have different experiences and the one who ends up on the top writes right and wrong. So will justice prevail? Of course it will".
It's quite charming to rhetorically end it like that, if justice is defined by the winner then justice always prevails. He seems similar to Teach in that way but rather than rejecting to speak about right and wrong, Doflamingo seems to embellish making it as pointless as possible and riding it out. I found it quite powerful and quite gross.
But my favorite scene of all was when Garp went to sit with Ace. It was so powerful to me it made me cry. We saw how hard this was for Garp as he laughed off his sadness but he couldn't stop hearing Ace's cries in his head. This is his grandson and he's letting himself down, Ace down, and Roger down by letting his happen. It must be killing him inside. So when the new plan to execute Ace early came through it was the moment I think he decided he had to go ride this out with Ace for it's the least he can do. When Sengoku questioned Garp and Garp responded, "Shut up, I just want to be here" that is when it really hit me. He's between a rock and a hard place. He can't go against his duty to the navy but he loves his grandson. He's forced into a place of inaction. Garp of all people is in over his head. And if he can't do anything to help Ace the least he can do is say goodbye to him and sit by his side in camaraderie for what is to come. That's at least how I took it and man when I thought of it that way it broke my heart. The hero of the navy Garp with tears down his face was too much to watch. This is such a tragic moment, of my GOSH.... A grandpa with his grandson on opposite sides of a war and the only thing he can do for Ace is to sit by his side while his execution is approached. :/ |
