you know this is based on a manga?

if you are worried that it's a boring romance then no worries, ep1 was hilarious.
Also, in that case don't read the manga. It's worse imo and the manga style reminds me of the shtty romance you talked about (girl gets swept of her feet by a pretty boy).

If she goes back to her original weight (which I think it's gonna happen), it's gonna be fun to see how the boys will react and it's a way to tell us if they are really interested in her or if it's only because of her looks now.

I only read the first chapter of the manga so I cannots tell anything about it, but we will wait and see how the anime will turn ^^

That's sorta the whole point of the plot:

Unattractive girl becomes attractive, guys become interested in her, learn to like her for her personality, she becomes unattractive again and they all realize what they still like her for her personality. Replace weight with wealth, status, makeup, clothing, etc. and you'll have the basic plot for a fair number of shoujo romance stories (with some variations, like the MC starts off attractive or never goes back to being unattractive).

Typically the MC of these kind of stories has a perfect personality, maybe with a minor quirk like being plainspoken, hotheaded, or something that ultimately demonstrates just how pure-hearted a maiden she is; Kae is a satire on this genre because being a hardcore otaku/fujoshi isn't a minor quirk, she's not the typical "oh, she'd be the perfect girlfriend if she wasn't ugly/poor" type of MC, she's a MC with a hobby that would scare off the typical guy (something her friend touches on when she mention she has to hide her otaku hobbies from her boyfriend) and stays true to it even after her transformation.

So while it's easy to focus on the whole weight issue, let's not forget the romance itself has three guys (excluding Superior Senpai) who aren't just learning to see Kae past her physical appearance, but also learning her hobby doesn't make her "gross" even if they can't understand it.
